They neglected him as a person and as a man, they threatened him and judged him harshly for actions they deemed apocalyptic which were resulted from their careless actions. It was a disgusting episode in my opinion, and how anyone could think that the crew has any respect for Gordon is beyond me, especially when compared to other incidents the crew had to "clean up" including Kelly's "accidental" religious cult.

Is that better or worse you think ? If this timeline vanishes then Gordon wont remember anything and only the rest of the crew will have to carry the burden of what they did . If this timeline continues The crew will still have to bare the guilt of not knowing if they erased everything but now there is an added bonus of a Gordon living his life not knowing if the rest of the crew went back and if he is just going to vanish one day .

The multiverse theory says that when he went back he created a whole new timeline with him in it, when they go back again and take him away the one where he was there for 10 years will still exist as will one where he didn't go back nine the first place, the trick is to travel forward to the time line where his presence was momentarily in the past. The other universes will continue separately.

If you as a person isn’t allowed to question something then how advanced can a society actual be. If they themselves aren’t sure if their rules are effective then how are they different from religious dogma? Answer is they aren’t, they’re just pretentious buttholes who think they’re smart, but in all reality are just as terrified as the farmers running to the church for safety against the black plague which was obviously a curse from god for the worlds poor behavior.

There's several problems with their policy on this, Gordon was right, he could not completely get out of history's way. The best he could do was what he did. He created an identity, and took a job that was relatively unimportant. He could have done a lot worse... Could you imagine how much money he could have made by advancing tech at Google or Apple? Overall, the best decision would have been to take him and his family back to the Future... By taking them out of the timeline, it undoes any potential ramifications of his family lineage to the Future. There should be some ramifications for him starting a family, as opposed to just living as a bachelor... But the entire situation was out of his control.

This episode has allegorical references to a DS9 episode. Chief O'Brian is arrested on a diplomatic mission and accused of espionage by a new first contact race type scenario. He's innocent. Lack of understanding. He is sentenced to prison. Hard labor. His wife divorces him, his daughter disowns him, eventually he learns his friends die in war. His escape attempts are punished harshly. His prison friends are murdered. He grows old and psychotic. Bitter. Broken. Begging for death. .... Then he's woken up. The Federation petitioned for his release. He was in a mind prison. He'd only been "gone" for a few hours. The aliens use mind prisons instead of physical ones. O'Brian's wife, kid and friends were fine. He was going home. This mind-firked him. He had severe PTSD. He did more time in the mind prison than his real life. Then the show just glosses over it.

There was no valid point being made. Gordon was grasping at straws so that he could keep this reality intact. He had no idea what the consequences of his actions were going to be. When past kelly made one change in her past, it created a vastly different timeline and that was just time difference of 7 years. Gordon was 400 years in the past. The domino effect from that would be enormous. Any one of his future descendants could end up changing the world forever. Not to mention, the original descendants of Laura would never exist. As soon as you interfer with events either forward or backward from your own timeline, that timeline then branches off from that point, so essentially then two individual timelines exist parallel to each other...and the more you jump around, the more you try to "fix" something, the more branches you create.

So they go back 10 years to prevent all that. So Gordon has no idea. But captain still knows. In a different episode Issac cut off Gordon's leg as a joke. So they re grow his leg. But put him to work before his leg is done. Then later he gets stabbed in the new leg.

The discussion on these clips is good…. The entire point of this episode (And so many other storylines in both Orville and Star Trek) is to create this discussion surrounding the morality of various situations people could find themselves in in these SciFi universes. I think this is one of the best time travel stories ever put to screen period. Because all of them are right and all of them are wrong. There a simply is so much to think about and discuss regarding the ramifications of what happens here that there is no way to actually BE right or wrong. First thing first though; I see a lot of people who obviously haven’t actually seen the episode or understood what happened in it. Gordon was accidentally sent back in time when he tried to destroy the Aronov device during a Kaylon attack (The Aronov device manipulates objects through time and the Kaylon wanted it so they could change history, so Ed ordered the device destroyed before they could get it). After the crew determined he had been sent to the year 2015 they immediately tried to use the Aronov device to send the ship back to 2015 to get him. However the device only had enough Dysonium (its fuel source) to send the ship back to 2025, ten years after Gordon arrived. They didn’t abandon him or forget about him, they simply didn’t have enough fuel to make the entire journey. While in 2025 they found a dysonium source that they had to mine in order to power the device, and they tracked down Gordon who had now lived in the past for 10 years. They found he had created a life for himself and had a family in the past, which is a very bad thing because it could do untold damage to the timeline; people being born (or not being born) who make a big impact on history could potentially make a dramatic change 200 years in the future. Gordon refuses to leave his family (As anybody should expect) so with the Aronov device refueled Ed leaves him and takes the ship back another 10 years into the past and rescues Gordon only a few months after he appeared in 2015, having never left isolation or started a family. Gordon was wrong: To do anything which changed the past. He should have continued isolating himself, or committed suicide once he gave up home of being rescued. Marrying the woman he married changed her life. Perhaps the kids she didn’t have in the original timeline were instrumental in creating the Union, or establishing space travel. Maybe with future knowledge from his father the son Gordon has with her in the alternate timeline will alter humanity’s timeline for entering space as well. That could change Humanity’s entire place in the galaxy in the future. Gordon was right: He couldn’t have isolated himself, or been expected to do so for 10 years. He understandably felt abandoned (Even though he wasn’t) and his actions of seeking out someone to spend a life with, despite being wrong, are understandable. Ed and Kelly were right: Gordon shouldn’t have been allowed to stay on Earth in the past. He shouldn’t have been allowed to start a family. He shouldn’t have been allowed to change history. Ed and Kelly were wrong: They arrived ten years too late to change anything. The timeline had already been corrupted. Showing up in Gordon’s life and expecting him to abandon what he’d built for those ten years was simply harsh and not the correct solution. Leaving his son without a father, wife without a husband…. And to emphasize, it didn’t address the corruption that had already occurred to the timeline. The damage was already done, and taking Gordon away at that point was closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. Ed and Kelly were wrong to show up in Gordon’s life and expect to take him away from it. They should have never entered the timeline themselves and sought him out, but instead they should have focused on refueling the Aronov device and continuing the journey to 2015 so they could rescue him while corrupting the timeline as little as possible. One more random thought: The alternate timeline that Gordon created still exists IMHO. The crew left him there, with his family. They’re there, we saw them. They don’t simply cease to exist when the crew leaves to fetch Gordon from the earlier past, or they’d have never existed to begin with, and since we saw them they clearly exist. Just in an alternate reality. Paradoxes can be fun, but if this show is ever greenlit for more seasons I expect this parallel universe to turn up again as The Orville’s version of the Star Trek Mirror universe, where Gordon’s contamination of the timeline has altered history in a major way and humanity is either a much more aggresive, bad species, or they’re on the backburner of the universe and used as slaves.

The fact that Gordon’s obituary exists in the Orville’s database means that his 21st Century life and death are already part of Earth’s history. Removing him from the 21st Century would cause a paradox. I am betting that rescuing him in 2015 created an alternate timeline. The twist is that the timeline where Gordon died in the 21st Century is the actual timeline that the Orville is from. A bigger question is did any of the Orville crew ever tell Gordon what they did to his alternate timeline family?
