Wonderful early recording. I'll say, I've not been as saddened by the passing of any other singer or actor or known person as I have been of Gordon's. May he rest well and at ease for his life well spent, his music entrenched into our hearts and minds and souls ♥

I can't thank you enough for posting this. For a number of years I had been hoping to hear it again. I was a senior in HS in Ohio in 1965 when I turned on the TV and caught the middle of this performance of Early Morning Rain. I just learning how to play guitar and was blown away. I immediately decided I had to buy a 12 string guitar. Over the next few years I paid my way through college playing folk music. I still play this song and so glad I could hear this broadcast again

Of great historical interest. Lightfoot actually recorded JLTTB a couple of weeks before Dylan did, but Bob's version got released sooner. It was a GL single, but not released on an album for another 30 years. Lightfoot's first gigantic media exposure.

Lightfoot puts out his 21st Album next week and begins his 53rd year of touring? When does the Beatles put out their next album or perform next?

I just tried to sit through a guy named Jack Jones singing If You Could Read My Mind on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was so syrupy and sweet that I couldn’t make it halfway through it. Gordon has a special voice and his songs are not conducive to sweetening up. I do like Peter, Paul and Mary’s version of Early Morning Rain. They were very special, too.

Interesting to hear how his vocal style evolved. Much more country balladeer at this point. Even the renunciation of "plane" and train". Still has a good bit of vibrato at spots. Less of his deeper-sounding delivery and more nasal. Fascinating to me.

Yeah, surprising that he would do a Dylan song (especially with those God awful background vocals and horn section that was pre-recorded) on what was probably his first national show and being such a great writer on his own. Glad he did Early Morning Rain too.

It IS dated. That's the point. This is a performance rescued from 1965 for an audience today, not to compare it with other times but to listen to it within the context of THAT moment.
