Gordon Jacob's Fantasia performed by euphonium soloist David Childs

Gordon Jacob composed his Fantasia for Euphonium and Concert Band in 1969. It received its première in May that year, performed by Michael Mamminga and a freelance Wind Band in London conducted by Denis Wick.
American euphonium player Michael Mamminga commissioned Gordon Jacob to write the work during a year studying abroad in the UK on a fulbright scholarship following the completion of his Masters Degree from the University of North Texas.
Some mistakes were made during the publication of the work, most notably corrected wrong notes in the cadenza. Here David Childs plays the solo part as it was performed in the première, together with pianist Michael Schneider.
This video also contains images of the instrument (and mute) that Michael Mamminga used in the première - a Boosey & Hawkes Besson Imperial manufactured at Edgware Road, London.

Amazing playing! It is also very interesting regarding the top note in the cadenza; I'm preparing this at the moment, and I'd much much rather be playing an Eb. You've made me very happy!

I remember being told it was an Eb in the original manuscript, but printed as an E natural in the published version by mistake! So playing an Eb would be wholly acceptable :)
This was at UNT? Oh I could have gone, wish I knew about it!! In love with this solo now and this performance.

Playing introduction and dance this year. I will be playing this solo for my jr! I live in Texas funny enough, but unt is definitely in the conversation for one of the best euphonium studios. Dream school for sure
