GoPro Labs Motion Detect GoPro Hero8

Video illustrates installation of GoPro Labs firmware for GoPro Hero 8 and configuring Motion Detection for capture of birds on a bird feeder. After much trial and error it seems motion detection feature is not functional for capturing birds. With the highest Motion Mask and Sensitivity settings the camera will still often detect motion not caused by birds and create an abundance of recordings.
As of January 2021 New GoPro labs Firmware is available with IMU based motion detection. Attaching camera to feeder and using IMU might be a better solution at least if it is calm day when bird lands the vibration can trigger video start.

Seem like a lot of bull crap for motion sensor, go pro can't just make a camera with motion sensor built in . Like my game camera. I would have a lot of use for that

Do you have to "reset" the camera after every recording by scanning the QR code? When I try this with my Hero 9 it records one time and even though I've selected "repeat motion capture" it only is triggered by motion one time then I have to rescan the code to get the camera to do it all over again.

Excellent, well explained video. What external battery pack did you use and how long does it last? Any recommendations for a plugged in power supply as I'm looking to time lapse video for 2 to 5+ days. Thanks.

I received it as a present and it has no clear identification where I could find it being sold on Amazon. Whether it would last for several days I guess depends on interval and sunlight. With GoPRo labs with correct settings even standard battery could last for days perhaps but there would be a larger interval between image captures. Mine does have a solar charger but not sure how well it would keep up with charging camera. I assume not well. GoPro site on one page recommends Voltaic battery pack. I have the Voltaic V50 they make bigger one V75 voltaicsystems.com/v75/. Some battery pack when device gets to full charge stop supplying power then the camera battery runs out and camera stops running even though battery pack is full. Voltaic V50 I have does not do that. Perhaps some other chargers may not either. I have run multiple overnight timelapses with battery packs and have often seen where next morning camera is off and battery pack has energy. I think it was due to bad memory card (IE memory card corrupted so camera stopped capturing then just shut itself off. Or could have been the 10 degree Fahrenheit temperature. I would suggest experimenting at your home in back yard to get correct combination of settings and verify outcome is good. Then go to location where the timelapse will be. I have hiked to locations in deep snow left camera, came back the next day and had a 30 second timelapse which stopped shortly after I left the camera. So experiment at home first, then go out.

@@MarcusGlass Thank you. That is the best lead I've gotten so far as I originally thought I would be able to find a dummy battery or that GoPro would officially recommend some type of solution being the camera is designed to take time lapse video. The link you provided shows that the external battery can remain plugged in to both the outlet and camera. I've been reading that the GoPro Hero 8 can also operate on a USB cable with the battery removed however the side door cover needs to be rigged closed for the camera to operate. The other solution was to replace the side door with a Ulanzi G9-7 Cover (tinyurl.com/amazon-gopro-side-door) that has an opening in the door for the USB cable to attach. I also read that the USB cable method with no battery gets mixed results including sometimes the camera not powering on. As with any new camera shooting challenge, no doubt on testing before shooting live video. As always, thank you.

@@cyrcoinc I found best outcomes on GP8 and GP9 were with GoPro battery in camera. Link below is where Voltaic V50 is mentioned and information about selection of external batteries: I assume V75 works but I have only used V50. gopro.github.io/labs/control/longtimelapse/

I was considering getting a GoPro for the same purpose. I'm surprised that setting up motion detection is so convoluted, and that it apparently uses so much energy. Is this still the case with the Hero 9/10? Are these also "not functional for capturing birds"? Configuring motion detection is so much easier on my GardePro, but a major downside of that camera is that it can record for only a fixed amount of time once motion is detected (10s is the default). Plus, I imagine the GoPro takes higher-quality video. Marcus, if you're still out there... what did you end up using for recording birds?

  • @MarcusGlass

There are some bird feeders with cameras built in but it does not appear to me the video quality is as good as GoPro could be. I will be trying out GoPro 10 with Labs firmware soon to see if it is any better than 8 was. I found the 8 was pretty much recording most of the time as any little motion seemed to trigger recording even when I changed sensitivity. I have not been doing too many bird videos at feeder lately. Realistically a person might as well just turn on GoPro and record for an hour. Then edit out the parts where there are no birds. Probably less hassle. If it is snowy out putting some seed on ground and setting GoPro out can catch some birds hopping around the camera. Also consider remote trigger to sit in house and trigger recording start when you see bird (if feeder is close enough. Just make sure to turn off the beeping sound so it does not beep when it starts and stops recording causing birds to fly away perhaps..

Great video on this subject. I am confused about the motion sensitivity settings. I would think that a low sensitivity would trigger less unwanted motion of leaves and background motion and a high sensitivity would trigger more unwanted motion clips. Do I have this backwards?
