Thanks for your GPH 9 videos @Great Day For A Hike! I'm wondering if your standard mode settings would change at all for a more urban environment?
@GreatDayForAHike
3 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! The standard mode settings should work well for urban environments too. In fact, if you’re around a lot of buildings and want the lines on those building to remain straight the Linear setting combined with Horizon Leveling will be great for this. The other settings should work well in an urban environment as well. If lighting is good you could bump the ISO Max setting back to 400. Otherwise these settings should work well.

Great video, thanks. But does it really make sense to have 5k with 24p? This appears to be quite choppy an many situations, especially the ones with camera movement.
@GreatDayForAHike
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. Fair point. Rolling shutter is an issue, especially with smaller sensors and EIS on. If there isn’t a lot of side to side movement it isn’t a big deal but if there is filming in 60fps can help.
Best among the rest about the setting!

@GreatDayForAHike

This is a great question. I do not believe there is currently any way to adjust this but you are correct, it does have a greenish hue on the back vs the front. Maybe GoPro will implement this in a future firmware update.
Thank you very much for this clearly explained review for an H9 newbie. Could you suggest an editing app for the H9 please?
@GreatDayForAHike

You’re welcome! I use Adobe Premiere Pro and really like it. However, GoPro does have a free app that you can use for light editing of GoPro footage. There are many other great editing software options out there too depending on which operating system and hardware you use.

DaVinci Resolve. It's got a free version and even the full version is just 255€, lifetime, while Premier Pro costs 25€ a month and in 10 months as much as Resolve lifetime. And many video editors also need After Effects which costs the same. So it's really expensive, at least for me. Davinci Resolve free version is really powerful too and especially the coloring tab. It's still used in Hollywood (Google says) You can watch this video if you want: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWmirJaLfdyenbg.html&ab_channel=ZebraZone

@@GreatDayForAHike I have Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements. Premiere Elements doesn’t handle 2.7K very well at all. That was very disappointing since I love the simplicity of Elements, and I have a lot of 2.7K footage that I’m just getting around to editing. I take it that you don’t have problems editing 5K or 2.7K footage with Premiere Pro?

@GreatDayForAHike

If you’d like to upload directly to FB I’d recommend using 24fps as the frame rate. The stone block dam is located along the Blue Ridge Parkway near the center of Virginia. It’s a nice place to visit.
Hi, that was interesting as a new user - however can I ask one question - if I dont want to do a lot ( any ) post processing, how would the settings change ? I am assuming the main change is to change Color to GoPro from Flat - is that correct or are there other changes that would be needed to have a product straight out of the camera ? ANY help gratefully received.

Hi, great question! I actually just published a video that outlines the best settings for those who want footage straight out of the GoPro with no editing: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGme1JRrl7GqfrA.html You are correct. One of the main changes is the color mode. There are a few other changes I recommend as well but that is a key one.

Yes, if you want videos straight from the camera then I recommend filming in 24fps.
Thank you for saving my life: I’m not new to photography, but I’m a babe in the woods with GoPro. Just bought a 9 rig this week. I just did all of your settings, but have you done a vlog about settings for extreme dark/night conditions? I think I saw in someone else’s video that you should set a shutter speed of 1/48, 24fps, and 1600 max ISO. Also, maybe turn something off, like sharpening? Don’t remember. Nor do I remember a color balance setting. Does this sound right to you, and any additional recommendations? Also, like I said, I’m an idiot with this stuff, so can I add additional custom settings, besides the one they give you by default? Again, thank you, thank you, thank you! I haven’t shot a second of footage yet. Just watching YT videos to learn.
You’re one of the few (of the vids that I’ve watched) who advise selecting Flat instead of GoPro Color. I really like that path. It’s what I do on my photos. Being new to the GoPro scene tho, what editing software are u using?
@GreatDayForAHike
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I truly like using Flat so that I have more control over the finished product. I use both Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Premiere Pro of course has a monthly cost. DaVinci Resolve has a free version that is quite powerful and capable.
5:54 -- This is a critical setting and I'm so glad he hit on it. You want that 180 degree angle, which is a 1/48 shutter (for 24 fps footage) so gotta use NDs for that. It's the more naturally smooth motion. If it's Auto and it's too bright, the camera will up the shutter where it gets 'jittery' as it clamps down on the shutter (like a camera 'squinting').
@GreatDayForAHike
2 жыл бұрын
I will also add that Polar Pro makes great ND filters for the GoPro cameras. I own a set and the great thing is those same ND filters for the 9 are also compatible with the 10.
Your videos are so good, so much information really well said, I have my new GoPro hero 9 black about 2 weeks now, it's my first ever GoPro camera, and I'm in a experiment faze at the moment, I brought mine from an official retailer but seems to heat up a little bit, and also the battery life isn't that I hope it would be, did you or have you ever come across this, thanks take care stay safe.
@GreatDayForAHike
3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your feedback. Yes, what I found with mine is updating the firmware did help with the camera running a little cooler and also seemed to optimize battery life. I do find that if I’m filming in 5K, then my battery life is typically only going to be about a max of a little over 1 hour. The camera does get warm but I only finding it getting really hot if I’m outside in hot weather and direct sunlight. Even with it getting hot I have still found it functions properly without powering off or having other glitches.

@@GreatDayForAHike thanks so so much for the detailed information your awesome, I understand now, I know this next question is going to sound strange lol, I'm a newbie total newbie, I'm used to filming of a mobile phone, now today I filmed my first ever GoPro video and my desktop is a standard desktop 1080p NOT 4K or anything like that, so when I played back my footage I could hear myself talk but not see the video, so then I downloaded a program called VLC media player and that showed my video but the video was very very slow moving if that then at times the video wouldn't move, I'm guessing I need a 4K computer right?, I thought I'd ask before spending money on a computer thanks for your time and help take care stay safe.

@@Rate-My-Travels You will want to make sure you have the HEVC codec installed. It should be a one-time purchase of 99 cents from Microsoft. Some say it can still be found for free out there too. GoPro 5K and 4K footage does take decent computing power to play it back and edit it due to the quality and bitrate of the footage. You won’t necessarily need a computer with a 4K display to play it back but you will need a decent CPU as the CPU will be handling most of the playback work with reading the footage filmed with the HEVC codec.

Generally having an ISO Max of 400, EV Comp set to to -0.5, Sharpness of Low or Medium are the key settings that will give best results in bright sunlight in 1080.
