GoPro Hero 8 Black is an awesome camera, BUT as we all know, the audio in GoPros have always been lacking. GoPro has attempted to address this issue with the release of the Media mod. The Media mod is a cage that attaches to the gopro and has a built in microphone. They also have plans to release a light mod and display mod that can be attached to the media mod. This sounds like an awesome idea and has the potential of turning your Gopro into a production video powerhouse.
So, in this video I give an overview of the Media mod, show you how to set it up and test it....you will be surprised with the results - CHECK IT OUT

Thumbs up for the opinion that the audio jack upgrade you get from the flimsy Media Mod cage is worth $20! I spend a solid 2 days working with the media mod (without posting...just seeing what's best), and GoPro REALLY missed the mark considering it's supposed to be an all-in-one solution WITH a better microphone attached! OUCH, my ears!! GoPro, take OFF the POS microphone you chose to install in the Media Mod, make the surrounding plastic just a little thicker (cheapest feeling frame ever...most aren't commenting on how cheap the frame feels!), and sell us the Media Mod Cage with the 3 inputs for $50 so we could add our own quality mics (Love my RODE wireless GO). I think that EVERYONE would buy it then because it would be 100% worth the price! As it is, it's too pricey for what you get (just an opinion, of course!). Maybe reduce the price of this to $50 as is, and I will consider a re-purchase! (I sent mine back.) After testing for 2 full days both indoors and out, as the GoPro Media Mod is made as a specific item FOR vlogging, the dynamic range and EQ response just sounds absolutely terrible. By adding my own EQ in post, I can make it sound decent in DaVinci Resolve, but out of the box? ECK! Sound is so important to vlogging, and the tone and frequency response curve is so disappointing. It says one thing...cheap mics installed. The cardio response is so odd...almost as if there are two omnidirectional mics in the GoPro Mod that's covered too much! I really wanted to keep the MEDIA MOD, but I just couldn't get over the fact its $80. The potential is there...but the mics already need an upgrade for the $80 you spend!

I really DO like my GoPro Hero 8, and have the 7 too, but GoPro has 100% lied to all of us regarding their "Directional Mics" in there ridiculously priced Media Mod at $80! I'm not promoting anything, but pointing out the TRUTH regarding the "better mics" in the Media Mod. I didn't want to do it since I might get "flagged" for adding a link, but here's a full disassembly teardown as to what's truly INSIDE GoPro's Media Mod. Prepare for buyer's remorse! Here's the link, check it out!! gethypoxic.com/blogs/technical/gopro-media-mod-teardown I had already sent mine back because of the poor sound quality out of the box. If GoPro would reduce the price to $50 for using the frame's 3 ports and adding my own quality microphone, it would be worth it. At $80? For me, not so much...Excellent Review, by the way!!

I think the "worth" of the media Mod really depends on what your application is. If you're simply going to sit the camera on a tripod in front of yourself and make a commentary, or perhaps carry it with you down a trail, or on a beach, or just to goof around with your friends/family at the campsite, well then the MM is probably not worth the money spent. You really don't need the MM for those applications. However, if you want to video/record yourself playing a guitar and you don't have the luxury of an acoustic friendly room (such is my case) then the MM really comes in handy. Now I haven't tried my planned setup yet, I'm still waiting for a couple of items I need to arrive via Amazon, but I have researched it and I know it will work just fine. I'm going to run music files via my computer, an external lavalier mic, and my guitar amp through the input side of a small mixer, and then into the MM from the output(headphone jack). With this setup, my acoustically unfriendly room doesn't matter, it's completely taken out of the equation and I'll get a clear, crisp audio signal directly into the GoPro along with the video. The setup is actually quite simple, but it does require some odds and ends to properly connect it together. The point is, the worth depends on the application. In my case, being able to go direct from multiple input sources, right into the GoPro, meets the needs that I have and solves poor audio quality problems that I wouldn't otherwise be able to address, and with the additional benefits of being able to cold-shoe mount a light, or the anticipated release of the GoPro monitor, as well as being able to plug into external power while recording it is well worth the $80 to me. Thanks for the video. I wasn't actually expecting that small shotgun mic to be very significant, and it was the least of the reasons I purchased the MM. Be safe, Happy recording.

I think some of you are missing the real value add for the media mod. It's not so much about the mic and quality of sound but how this mod incorporates the "dongle" required on previous GoPro cameras. The "dongle" is necessary to use other external mics but had no place to "fit" without using some velcro or glue (such as on a helmet). I think GP would have done well to eliminate the mic that's incorporated into the media mod and reduce the price to $50 (which is how much the "dongle" cost) and then let users add their own mics.

  • @Kitearmy

    @Kitearmy

    4 жыл бұрын

I get that BUT this was being sold as a solution that for most customers would not require any of that extra equipment. I understand that pros will always want external mics but for my channel the idea of this product would have been perfect.

Good review. The issue that I have with the media mod is that when it is used with the upcoming LCD screen (which, btw, appears to be non-adjustable and not a flip-up screen), it takes out the mini USB port, which can externally power the camera. This is critical for long shoots. Although not relevant to this review, I have contacted GoPro Tech Support numerous times over the years since the Hero 4 to finally add a switchable date/time stamp to the recorded video (like most of the Chinese action cams do), but they have not done anything to date.

Hello, Andrew! Great video! I just got the Media Mod for the Gopro 8. (Sorry I refuse to say "Hero" because I think that's a stupid name for a camera.) I see a lot of negative comments here, but I plugged in a 3.5mm mic that I can clip to my shirt collar and it makes a world of difference. Background noise is almost nil, my voice is deep and I don't need to "yell" over other noise. At least for my use, it was money well spent. (Sound quality with the mod and 3.5mm mic is so good, I'm thinking to retire my Canon G7X for KZread videos.) However, there are a few things that I DON'T like about the media mod: #1 The mod doesn't have its own "feet". Instead, you must fold down the camera's feet through a hole on the bottom. That means that if you want to detach it, you can't just slide the camera out and leave the cage on the tripod. You need to dismantle the whole thing which is a lengthy process. (I wish I could use the waterproof camera on my lengthy motorcycle commute every day, and then on the tripod in the evening.) Then, the angle and everything needs readjusted. #2 You noticed a "slight" improvement with the cage-mounted mics. I didn't. #3 So far, I haven't been able to make the HDMI do anything. I have two different screens and two different HDMI cables and no combination has worked so far. #4 You have no options to control the cage-mounted mics. The only way you can get options in Preferences->Input/Output is to plug in a 3.5mm microphone cord. If that's the case, then the cage-mounted mics are basically useless. Again, great video, Andrew! (I've subscribed and everything).

thank you so much for being honest about it rather than just trying to sell it. you answered my question with this review. quite honestly this mod is pointless. I would be better waiting for a ulanzi cage for it and using the old audio adapter and a better mic and the ulanzi LED light which is very cheap. I would save a fortune and get much better audio and probably better light. it would only be worth having it in stero mode as well, no one will remember to switch it from front to back all the time. I think GP have messed up here big time.

I approve, simply because I like having the port integration and the shoe mount points for my shotgun mic and light kit. The price has dropped to $55 for the HERO8 after the release of the HERO9, and honestly no one wants the HERO9 because of the 01.22 firmware update flubber in December. Just be aware of this, you're going to struggle with mod compatibility on the HERO9. My HERO8 has been trusty and still kicking with full compatibility for my mics, my lightkits, my remote lapier pack transponders and everything else I have that has a standard shoe. I'd say if you're going for pure audio quality coming out of the mic that's built in, miss the mod, but if you want mod integration, this is the upgrade for you that'll let you stick your mods on without a million cords and adapters coming out of your camera. I think the product fulfills its intended purpose, and now that GoPro has reduced its prietag, its very fair to stay a safe generation behind the HERO9 without compatibility issues. Good buy.

Since a cage is going to be necessary to get a 52mm filter ring, the media mod is not a choice anyway, and there are cheap flip up mirrors that enable seeing the screen, so the monitor, if it ever arrives, is not needed. By not being prepared at launch, GoPro caused us to find better solutions.

Thank you. This was a very detailed and useful review. Many reviewers don’t bother to go outside. However, the comparison was done on a day where there appeared to be no wind whatsoever. It would have been helpful if you did a second comparison on a day with low to moderate wind. Maybe next time.

From your test, the sound was better with just the camera. I did purchase the Mod because of the cold shoe mounts and being able to charge without removing the door. I too think the idea was good but at least you can add a different mic that will work better. I have seen this same test using a Shot Gun mic and it does work better with added mic. I do hate that it's not waterproof anymore. Another drawback of the Mod. Thanks for your testing, looking forward to the other added Mod testing.

I care more about the mod for the hot shoe mounts, mini hdmi, usb C, and the mic jack. This turns the small gopro into an all in one with your preferred mic and an external light type of situation. I plan on using it for live streams! But they are all sold out now during Covid-19 :(

I ride in the rain, so I’m concerned about losing weather - resistance with the adapter and third party door, so for the extra $20 or so this may be a better option for my needs, even if the sound quality doesn’t improve much.

I have the bulky adaptor thing for the Hero7 (as the mod won't fit it) and it sucks. The connection is wonky, comes loose easily, the USB-C connector got bent on maybe my first or second use, and you have to either get some kind of third party door or leave it exposed. The sound is good when it works with a decent lav mic, so I'm glad I got it but as a product it's like 3/10 from me!

Another useful test would be to see how it sounds in loud areas. Does it pickup voices when walking along a noisy street? How does it work in a crowded setting with lots of background conversations? And honestly, show me any mic in this category that would sound good at 30+ feet.

As someone who uses the GP H7 Black weekly for vlogging, my biggest question is have they fixed the reliability issues with the H8 Black? As in, have they fixed the issues of freezing at random requiring a soft reset or a battery removal? Actually, the mic that I use has design that would not work will with the media mod 3.5mm jack on the rear. My biggest issue with my H7 Black w/mic adapter is that the first 2-3 seconds of recording always has no audio, as if the mic input isn't active. I was hoping the H8 Black w/media mod would make it so I didn't need to bother with an external mic. Very disappointing to see that the mic on the media mod is essentially no good compared to the onboard. I was seriously thinking of upgrading. But then again, anything GoPro nowadays is kind of questionable. Really sad too, it's basically the only American camera company, and it looks to be dying a slow painful death.

So the media mod is good because it cuts out the bulky converter for the mic. When strapping it to a helmet or and other compact surface this make it much less a complex set up. Edit; the bulky converter is $50. It's huge, had short wires so it need to be 3" from the camera also fixed to the helmet. I'm happily going to pay an extra $20 you cut that out bro. Edit #2; at 1:30 open the battery door and there is the place to plug in the converter to the 3.5 jack. Another plus to the media mod is you don't have to leave the batt exposed to use a mic.

I have the Hero 8. The camera's great and I was going to purchase the media mod. After seeing your video and listening to the sound comparison, I've decided it is not worth GBP 79.99 (UK) which translates to much more than your $80 (USA). I am a PPL pilot and shoot a lot of cockpit video using an adapter to capture audio from intercom and ATC to a Zoom H4N and sometimes my iPad. If I'm shooting footage on the ground I just use an external audio capture device (H4N or Roland RH09) The quality is awesome even just using a cheap external mic. Apart from the convenience of plugging external gadgets into the H8 I don't think the Media Mod is worth the money for the audio capture feature alone.
