The Guidebook helped me with so many games... Metroid, Zelda, Goonies, Kid Icarus... Nintendo Power as well. Still have them. Some are very worn! Can't tell you how much trouble my brother and I got into for calling Redmond WA. multiple times(long distance phone calls, remember those?) for the Nintendo hotline for help before the Guidebook.

My mom found this at a garage sale back in the late 80s. The label was missing, and someone had written "Goonies 2" on it in it's place. But I played it like crazy and beat it. I passed it on to a friend when I gave them my NES. Truly a classic.

Damn! I've been playing this game since '88 and I never knew you could throw the boomerang in multiple directions! I relied on the Official Nintendo Player's Guide to beat this game back in the day. Hell, I busted it out the last time I played this game on stream because I had completely forgotten where one item was. I have notes written in it from ten-year old me. Present me really appreciates that! Oh man, I have Wai Wai World. It kinda sucks. One thing worth mentioning is to pay attention to which way Mikey is facing in the corner of the first person sections. It's crucial to navigating between the front and back maps, and once you realize this, the game becomes a lot less disorienting. Great video, dude!

  • @GenerationGapGaming

Yeah dude I just came about the boomerang thing by accident. I was trying to see if I could throw a bomb while jumping and when I did that combo of buttons in mid air it threw the boomerang in that direction. And it worked for any other direction I tried too. It was cool but I assumed others figured that out too lol. So cool you have your own notes in your guide from when you were a kid. Thanks as always for watching dude. Always enjoy your comments.

We didn't want Duck Hunt and the Zapper, so we returned the system, bought the lesser one without the Zapper, and used the extra money to buy Goonies 2.

Back in the 80's and early 90's, Pac-Man on Atari is the common tune used in video games scenes/arcades heard in TV shows and movies.

How to show a video game in a 1980s/early 1990s movie: 1 - Use prerecorded footage of your kid playing the game. 2 - Replace the audio with Atari 2600 sfx no matter what console is being played. 3 - Have the actor "playing" the game manhandle the controller like a confused monkey. Optional - Describe the game in a completely inaccurate manner by spewing out random, "gamer term" gibberish. Even if your film was specifically intended to revolve around video games and marketed to the gamer audience (looking at you 'The Wizard'). Strangely even a lot of modern movies continue to use this formula....

Back in 1988 I committed to playing this game with hopes of actually making it somewhere....played it a few times previously and saw my older brother find a couple Goonies (it was his game). It felt like I played it for the entire day, I remember the feeling of realizing how the maps connected like something clicked and was able to open up the entire world and find all the Goonies and the mermaid. I beat it at the age of 6 and I knew I did something amazing although I never thought it was possible.....it’s not an easy game but definitely one of the best nes games and the music I can still hear til this day

My brother and I were completely hooked on this game back in the day. He got it as a gift one year when I was around 8 years old, and we both tried our hardest to play through the whole thing, but kept hitting roadblocks in our progress. The funniest one (and my favorite memory of the game) revolves around that got-dang CANDLE. Nowhere in the game does it tell you to hit that old woman five times, and we were so fed up with not being able to progress without it that we began systematically going through every room and hitting every corner of the screen with every tool in our arsenal. When we reached that old woman, our patience had completely run out, so we just started hitting her over and over out of sheer frustration. You can imagine our laughter and bewilderment when she spit out the candle. That stupid candle-spitting woman made us paranoid about checking every corner of every game we played after that point, for a good number of years. Funny thing is, this actually HELPED us in games like Metal Gear or the Metroid series.

This was one of my favorite games as a kind on the NES. I remember picking it out at Children's Palace for my birthday- which actually would have been 31 years ago today, actually! Even though the Front/Back map system confused me, I played through it as a kid. Funny thing is, until I saw your video, I don't know if I ever realized Ma Fatali was even in the game!

Thanks for making this video! As much as I love the game, it always felt too obscure and underrated to me. I'm floored to see that (at the time of this writing) there are over 118,000 views; over 3,000 likes; and over 700 comments! It's astonishing to realize I'm not alone in loving this game. When the game does come up in conversation, I'm always surprised to find out how many people had a hard time beating the game. I did have the instruction manual and the wonderful Player's Guide that you mentioned, but even with those things for many other classic games, I never could beat them. But "Goonies II" had just exactly the right learning curve for me, and it was the first game I ever beat, and to this day one of the few I've ever beat. That's why it remains my favorite video game of all time! (I'm glad you beat it now, and I'm sure you beat many, many more games in your childhood than I did. And you beat them without the manual! It's just interesting how different things work for different people.) I knew all the strategies but not the trivia. I didn't know about Mikey's appearance in the Wai Wai game, and I had no idea it cameoed in a movie! Re: your question about the Pac-Man sound effects -- only the very earliest games had sounds that no one bothered to copyright, and so are public domain. It doesn't matter what video game from what era, or how sophisticated the game's sound is; you'll always get Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or Space Invader noises dubbed into the movie or TV show! Thanks again for sharing and allowing us to relive the memories!

This is one of my favorite NES games of all time. I beat this game without a guide, but then again it probably took me at least 20-30 hours. I remember having so much difficulty finding the last Goonie all because i missed one hidden door. I still play this game quite often and can get through it rather quickly now. I think I still have most of it memorized. I played it so much the in game map actually still makes sense to me!

I loved Shadowrun. It took a couple rentals before I beat it the first time, and it's the only game I ever rented again so I could replay it after beating it. I finally own a copy thanks to Ebay.

I absolutely loved this game as a kid. I had a huge sense of accomplishment when I beat it and it still ranks among my favorite video game soundtracks. It's sad to think I probably wouldn't have the patience for it now, but man the nostalgia hits hard for me on this one.

Aw man, I can only imagine you knew about the Black Book (aka Nintendo Player's Guide) when you were a kid and it got flushed down the memory whole somewhere. That guide was the prized possession of many an 80s kid.

Great video as always!!! I got my copy of Goonies II in 1988. I still have it. I beat the game that summer and I’m sure I used the Player’s Guide. I still have G2 (as well as all my original NES games as well as my Player’s Guide. Too many great memories to ever let them go. Cheers, Tyler!

Used to play co-op goonies with my brother and sister back in the 80s when we were all young kids. Also had goonies 2 for NES and always thought it was just the sequel to the commodore game I had. Loved both games.

This is a personal thing, but I truly appreciate your extra bit of information including the other available Goonies games. I played a game at my grandmothers house almost 30 years ago, that I could never remember the name of, and have been trying to remember for many years. Since I was very young when I played it I also had no idea what game system I was playing on. Turns out that it was Goonies on the Commodore 64! Now I can track it down and play it again, all thanks to you! Thank you!

back in the day in a unsigned little store in a little mall, I found a bootleg 23 in 1 game cartridge for my NES from Japan and the first goonies was on it....good game. At that time, a 1 in 23 was AMAZING and then I remember 100 in 1 being available but too expensive. Great channel man....
