    Not sure why you guys are annoyed about the controller going over wifi. Since the game is being streamed the latency that matters is between the controller and the cloud instance where it's actually running. So it makes sense having it go directly to the router instead of to your device (potentially a low end device), get decoded and then forwarded to the router. It's how chrome casts work as well. They get a reference to the stream and then stream directly instead of trying to use another device as middleman. It also means they can optimise the controller in ways they couldn't if it had to interface with hundreds of different devices.

  • @TopCheeseBarDown

    @TopCheeseBarDown

    Eh, you guys are missing some key points. Wifi controller is actually good network design. The Wifi controller talks to your router directly instead of getting proxied via your device, so they are able to remove an entire source of network latency. So the route the packet data takes (factoring out router) ends up being: wireless controller --input--> servers --output--> device instead of: wireless controller --input--> device --input--> servers --output--> device where: input = buttons pressed output = stream video Btw, even if you don't have a wifi controller, you will still have to send input over the network to their servers so they can compute the game state, at which point they send down the rendered output (video) to your device.

If you have no local files for the game, then no mods. That's gonna be a HUGE turn-off for many people. Along with other reasons people won't like it lol (not liking the idea of streaming games regardless, internet connection issues, lag, not having ownership of games, etc). It might be cool for some people, e.g. people who don't mod, aren't big gamers, can't afford a console, can't afford a solid PC - but for a lot of others it's gonna be a big nope (me included). And for the sake of gaming as we know it, I hope this fails miserably.

  • @Carl_Isaksson

    For the sake of gaming you hope this dies? This might elevate gaming to another level. At the current state developers are held back by the performance limitations of consoles and people with normal PC’s. A developer won’t try and make a game that only a high end PC can run because the majority of players won’t be able to play that game. This might make it much more accessible for people to play high end games which in return would allow the developers to create bigger and better games than ever seen before. This might therefore make the gaming industry advance with a much quicker pace than previously.

    I think most of the criticism I'm hearing from you seems to have a root in the misunderstanding of what the point of the presentation was and who the target audience is. This presentation was targeted to developers primarily. The tech demos that you feel didn't look too good or weren't perfectly optimized to show how reliable the streaming was, I think misses the point. It's a tech demo to show developers a small snippet of how they could possibly implement similar features for their own games. Developers don't need to see a polished, fully featured experience to be sold on the technology and APIs they will get to work with. Something small and even incomplete, but shows what can be done is what appeals to them. This wasn't meant to sell the platform the consumers yet, in my opinion. If it was, then I'd agree, they should've done a better job of putting their best foot forward in selling it to the general consumer that would most likely be using it (players and content creators). When your target audience are developers and engineers, the primary things they care about are what kind of tools are being offered to make their jobs easier or help them take the next steps in their vision that may not be possible with current tools and technologies. For example, the Machine Learning tool that lets them apply a "picture" to their game to change the designs in realtime, is mostly likely meant for prototyping. Instead of spending a lot of time in the early stages of development coming up with a proof of concept that could change pretty dramatically, it seems very beneficial to having a machine learning tool that can spins up some interesting looking textures for a developer to prototype iterations faster, so they can focus on things like gameplay, story, mechanics, systems etc. I won't pretend to speak for how all developers and engineers think, but as a professional engineer myself (Android Engineer), this is how I came out of this presentation thinking. One of the points Brandon kept bring up, "Wouldn't it be cool if" these things are possible or made. I believe he made a point of saying that Google put the ones on the developers to do these things, without showing them anything themselves. I think that criticism is a bit too much. If their main focus was building the platform first and getting it in the hands of the rest of the developers to make their creations, than I think it was actually wiser to spend the bulk of their time in making the best possible engine to sell the ideas of "what if" and spark that imagination to the creators to bring their visions to light. That's the whole point of tech demos. They aren't meant to be full fledged experiences. They are meant to sell a concept or idea with as little detail as possible (MVP - minimal viable product) in Engineering and Product terms. Finally, in regards to the points about Google's presentation quirks (showing the montage of games through history and some other cringy moments). Yeah, it was a bit goofy and cheesy, but it's actually more on brand than you may think. If you watch any of their other presentations of their software or hardware announcements, they all follow this same pattern. They're not a game company really. They sell software and some hardware. This is really their first foray into this industry so they probably went with a presentation style they are familiar with. Or they probably just have a consistent theme and branding strategy to any kind of product announcement. Even as an engineer myself, I also find it sometimes cheesy.... Any way, I hope my thoughts were insightful into how the target audience, developers and engineers, would've probably have summarized their feelings about this presentation. I've seen plenty of similar announcements in my field, for example the Google I/O announcements they do every year. Watch one of those, and you'll see a very similar pattern. Love you Allies, and keep up the good work. As a Patron for the past year, I thoroughly enjoy you guys and the content. Love & Respect!

    @@anonysalt I don't think you need a closed door session to curate a presentation to a target audience. The venue itself is the "Game Developers Conference". Watch almost any of the other announcements and presentations at this event, and it's clear the target audience is Game Developers. When another company that presents a new platform or updated platform to developers (Epic Games & Unreal Engine, Cryteck & CryEngine), wouldn't you say their target audience for that presentation are game developers as well? What's the difference between Google and Epic Games or Cryteck in this case? If this was E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) or the CES (Consumer Technology Association), than I'd agree their target audience is news outlets and consumers. I don't think you have to make an event or presentation closed door in order to make sure it's content can only be seen by the "target audience". Even though I'm not a game developer myself, I still find the talks at GDC fascinating from an artistic and engineering perspective. When I watch Google I/O, most of the talks their are on tools and APIs for developers, but I'm sure there are folks that still find it interesting in understand the tools engineers use to build apps and products.

    @@anonysalt Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only other audience they targeted were influencers and content creators. So these are the people that would work the Stadia in a "developer" profile as well. Meaning, what was targeted to these folks were tools they could use to engage with their audiences in a new way, than exists today. With that point, I think I agree that we can expand who the target audience is from just developers to developers and content creators. But that still doesn't include consumers, which I think is the point I'm trying to make. Consumers in my opinion are people that play games or watch content from content creators (the vast majority). I still believe that target audience of this talk was for folks that are meant to use Stadia as a tool in the jobs. That's why I made my points above, that the criticism I've seen addressed to this talk comes from the point of view of a consumer, and not a developer or content creator.

As the game is totally hosted and run on the servers, all users are just downloading the visuals and uploading the minimum data. That is a far more likely scenario than uploading the raw video.

Think about the last time you had a video on a streaming platform drop in quality or buffer...now imagine that happening while you are trying to actually play an action oriented game. Google can talk about their nodes all they want, but during peak hours, that "experiencing interruptions?" pop-up you see sometimes on KZread is going to be extra frustrating to have come up in Stadia.

My main concern is the ISP landscape is NOT at all prepared for this kind of bandwidth demand especially when it comes to pricing, if you have datacaps in your area you are SOL. If you are trying to play over mobile network and don't have unlimited non caped data, have fun with your overage bills. They may have solved the limitation of hardware and latency by shrinking the active footprint into a single instance you just literally RDP into.
