Google's Blogger Pros and Cons
So I've been using blogger for my personal blog for the last month. It's a great blogging platform and ideal for more of a casual, hobby project. It's not without it's drawbacks however. Get a custom domain at Namecheap: davidutke.com/namecheap
Blogger was one of the original blogging platforms launch well over a decade ago and still developed and maintained. It allows you to quickly and easily get a blog up and going and has a few distinct advantages and disadvantages you should know about:
PROS:
- Free web hosting. To have your own website, you typically need to pay for hosting. This is a standard cost of around $10 a month for a shared hosting account. With blogger, you get free hosting for your blog.
- Decent on-page SEO. Compared to Google Sites, you can actually create content that can rank because the structure of the blog, the blog posts and the titles and meta descriptions all help your website rank. You can actually go after keywords and phrases with a blogger blog and rank so you can make money from your blog.
- Can setup a custom domain and you get an SSL certificate. This is great because you can get yourwebsite.com, instead of some weird blogspot sub domain. Get your custom domain names at Namecheap because they have some of the lowest prices for dot coms: davidutke.com/namecheap
CONS:
- Dates in the URL. You have to have dates in your permalinks. This is a sub-optimal permalink structure.
- Design restrictions. I love adding essential legal stuff and disclaimers to my blog. With blogger, you need to edit the HTML to unlock the footer so you can add gadgets. Also adding a header that looks sharp is difficult too.
-Adsense integration. Unlike your own WordPress website where you can apply to AdSense and then run auto ads. You need to wait for your blogger blog to "qualify" for AdSense. What is the qualification? I have no idea. It's a big mystery.

Blogger was wonderful for many years until someone hacked my ads or something. But i’ve wasted more money on hosting Wordpress than i’ve made so I’m going back to blogger just for personal site with custom domain. Thanks for your video.

I love Blogger! It is so easy to use. You can literally get a site up and running in under an hour! You can remove dates now. They will not show up in your URL either.👌🏾

Hi, I'd like to know how I can remove the date from my blogger post url. It's really a hassle for me.
Very informative, David! I was not aware that I could fix my own domain to a blogger site! I am thinking of using this possibility to make some lean landing pages if I only find some good themes that does not look like +5 years old. Cheers!

For a landing page I would use Google Sites. Blogger really is designed for casual, personal blogs.

What hosting company do you use for WordPress I am having such a problem with the shared hosting and cheap low memory many of these companies use.
Can you please please please make a more detailed video explaining why Google Ads cant be added to Google site. Also, why is amazon affiliate not in compliance with google sites. Would greatly appreciate it.
What do you suggest for someone who is traveling and just wants to post photos/journal for family and friends to view?

That's literally what I do at my personal blogger blog. I write blog posts about place I travel or random topics on whatever I feel like and I upload images.
I read in Google Ad Sense it says you get monetize to having a: • 1k subscriber • 40k views monthly

No, only Google AdSense. Blogger is fine for a fun little side website. I would not use it for anything serious.
Hmmm!! Should I now leave blogger to WordPress, since my target is for the public and not personal blog. Your recommendation please!!

Blogger is for personal use. It's difficult to get traffic from my experience and good for a fun little side project.

Update: I'm still using blogger for my personal blog. I'm quite happy with the platform. Just make sure to get a custom domain at Google Domains or Namecheap. Google Domains as better integration, Namecheap has lower prices. I personally use Namecheap Get your domains at Namecheap: davidutke.com/namecheap

Sure, Bluehost for Namebrand. Hostinger if you're on a budget. WPX for large established websites. Namehero as a quality, under rated host.

I want to be able to blog, have a bio, post videos and pictures, have a contact page, and an event page. I probably add some merchandise later on. All advice is appreciated.

Casual blogging as a hobby. Use a shared host if you want to build a business.

There is no stated traffic limits for blogger so I'm not sure. The largest amount of traffic I've ever been able to get is 300-500 visits a day.

No. You can earn with blogger but it's not as effective as WordPress. If you want to make money with a blog, you have to build a topical, informational website.
I'm half way done signing up completely for Google Blogger for crochet but do I need to sign up for Google adsense I'm wondering how I actually get paid like into my bank account or check to my address in my name. Like how does all this work? Do you have any information on that?

Adsense is direct deposit. Once setup, you'll be paid monthly automatically.

@@DavidUtke okay yeah I did some more research and I watched one guys video he said he got denied 5 times before he got approved and said that he had to have more content and had to fix links and had to setup his about and home page at the top of his Blog before he got approved. I didn't know that that all had to happen before ads appeared I'm totally new at this. I want to blog about crochet and patterns and post free written Patterns of mine so I guess I'll have to do it for a while then apply for it. Thank you for reading the comment and messaging back.
So the likelihood of Google shutting down blogger is low??? I've heard that alot while I've been looking at different options. It doesn't help that everyone says just use WordPress. When, 1 I'm brand new to blogging, 2 I cannot afford to throw out money left and right for customizing..

Blogger is good for personal use, but if you want to build an income generating web property a shared host and WordPress is best.

the problem with blogger is the stuff is over 20 years old and has barely changed in that time. Very dated templates and functionality

Blogger is awesome for personal sites or little resource websites where you're not trying to build this big massive project. Bluehost is the #1 recommended web host for WordPress and is ideal for starting a commercial project you intend on growing to a large scale.

Yes, my blogger blog has a free SSL and free hosting. It does not rank as well as when it was WordPress. But blogger is perfect if you just want a personal site.

I degree blogger does not rank. I'm using it right now it's horrible.

Although it's a free blogging tool, you should expect some problems on the way.
