First time viewer here. Here are my concerns with your review. I believe the main purpose of using a back up is incase we lose our photos locally. Computer crash, home fire, lost phone, etc. What I didn’t hear you address was how easy it was to retrieve our photos from Amazon and Google? Or if Google/Amazon raised their prices and we needed to move to another provider? How does each store our files? Do they maintain our file structure? Keep our file names and data for our photos? Those are important questions we need to know when picking back-up service provider.

he did an incredible overview. it may take another search to get those... but he provided data that you're NOT gonna see from the providers, i.e., the drawbacks. it's such a dense area to learn from the bottom up in one video

It really depends on what you want. I don't think he was talking about straight file backup, but a service to manage your photos so you can search and find the ones you want. I use Google photos and it sorts them by date and doesn't have a file structure. You could keep the file structure if you used Google Drive instead of Google Photos.

My wife scraps with these photos. In Amazon it allows you to look at your photos and then very quickly print and if you're a prime member for a cheaper price than Costco that will be sent to you free and the pictures will be delivered to you free that is a big advantage that Amazon has.

Great tip! Thank you for sharing!
The main thing I use Amazon Drive for is displaying my photo's and video's on my big screen HDTV. If you have a Fire Stick, it has a PHOTO app that automatically connects to your Amazon Drive photo's and video's. This makes it great to bore the life out of your guests just like you did in the olden days of slide shows and home movies.

@@pamparker1860 You can choose random or date up loaded. If you delete a photo it will no longer show up on Fire TV. It is placed in a deleted folder on Amazon photo's for 30 days in case you change your mind.
My biggest issue with Amazon Photos is that it does not allow you to tell the app when the facial recognition is wrong... it has been proven that Amazon’s facial recognition fails people of color and often confuses different people for being the same person. I have tons of photos on Amazon where facial recognition has identified the wrong friend and I have no way to tell the app this and organize the photos correctly. I’m interested in testing out Google to see if I experience the same issues there.
FYI... Amazon Photo (prime) does offer PAID video upload and storage. (with unlimited resolution) While I was on vacation in Philippines I needed a safe storage place for my videos as well as my photos. I opted to pay $60 for a year for 1 TB of storage. Other than slow internet to upload them, I was able to upload my videos, and it made me feel safe knowing that for $60 my precious videos were backed up. BUT, that being said. I did not know my Google account would also store videos! I shoot mostly in 4K. But I do also have a 360 camera that shoots in 5.7K. so for me, I think Amazon is the better choice. (for now) As always Steve, thanks for the Vlog!
I have been following you for years and you have always been my GOTO source. I don't know if anyone thanks you, so I thank you immensely for all the years of your help!
As of December 2020 ** Newsflash** that may affect some of the great advice here, I imagine: Google will, as of June 2021 be including photos uploaded AFTER that date in the 15gb free storage provided. That means Google is no longer unlimited, even considering their 16mp limitation. This is a game changer (in the negative sense) for me. So I started looking at Amazon's unlimited photos and realized why it was that I never jumped on that bandwagon before. That is, there is no application for Macs running Mac OS X versions earlier than 10.12, which locks me out. Sad, because the computer I use is still the most powerful computer I have every owned, and meets every need for me, but it is slowly becoming obsolete simply because certain software houses simply stop including 10.11 capabilities, no matter how meager they might be.
Thank you so much for picking a winner and explaining the rationale behind it for your specific use case. That is something a lot of reviewers don't do. They shy away from calling a winner just say it's a TIE!!! This is fantastic review of the two major apps! Not sure which I am going to go with but thanks to your video I got a great place to start. Thanks for posting such quality content!

I'm a beginner. Which App will find photos on my computer and add to the photo storage?
Steve. Really enjoy your clear explanations! Anytime you want to delve deeper into amazon drive vs amazon photo i would love that. I also struggle with syncing and backing up. When is it safe to delete images from your computer so they stay put on the cloud?
The thing we need to learn about is where to backup raw image files. This is not to view files online but simply as a way that if the raw files on your local computer becomes corrupted you have a method of recovering these files and saving your photography business. If you are not aware already raw files are humongous. Is Amazon S3 Glacier what we should be looking at?
Hey!! This guy still exists??! I used to watch this guy, feels like 10yrs ago. Glad to see him still at it 👍🏾
I use both in addition to iCloud Photos! I love Google Photos for Autoawesomes that I wouldn't have without it, and I use Amazon Photos as another backup and as I have an iPhone, everything gets backed up to that as well. I don't take professional photos, but I take a LOT of photos (read: I took 304 photos of my dog the other day), so I like to have backups!

What if you have say 10,000 photos in your Amazon photo app and then you cancel your Amazon prime account. Do you loose all 10,000 pictures?
Steve thanks for this video. Question: was just fooling around with the automated slide shows that Amazon puts together and offers you. Pretty cool, you can edit the selected photos and little else best I can tell. Still, could be useable for social media. Do you know of any way to export that little slideshow video out of Amazon photos and into say Instagram reels? (or even Stories or a regular IG post?) Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for the video. Very straight forward and clarifying! I'll go with Google too!
Very thorough comparison. Found this helpful. I will be uploading RAW files, so the unlimited photo size aspect with Amazon is the determining factor.
Thank you for this comparison. 2 years old but still very relevant.
Good video! Been using Google photos, but from the video I'm encouraged to also use Amazon for redundancy, even though I have a cloud and local backup. Does either have duplicate detection & removal? Is it possible to rename the photos individually & in batch? Does either populate metadata like EXIF that will convey to other applications? BTW, at 12:55 "...for it's convenience." should be "...for its convenience."
Great presentation. One question though... When you imported your Google photos to Amazon, the person identification was done from scratch by the Amazon app, or it read the metadata/info from Google photos?
Thank you, appreciate your comparison. Currently looking at a few alternatives. Personally I'm steering away from the whole Google platform due to privacy concerns. Currently looking at PCloud as an alternative as well. I do appreciate your thoughts here though.
Thanks Steve. Storing videos will be priority for me. So I think Google Photos would be my choice. And it fits into my Google ecosystem.
Thanks for the video. I didn’t recall you saying anything about syncing. If I delete a photo on my iPhone is it deleted in Google Photos or Amazon photos automatically?
dottotech: You should cover the ease of leaving both services, exporting all your data, purging that data from the service and closing your account. This will become necessary for most users at least once because of email account hacking and service changes.
Thanks so much for all the great information!!!

Hi Steve, could you talk about Flickr and compare it with both Amazon Photos and Google Photos?. Thank you in advance :)
Great video and I am an old fan from the Evernote videos (I were a Evernote user). So, I had a great disappointing when I migrated from Apple Photos to Google Photos by the Google drive loader. Caused a Mess on my photos, all albuns were ignored and imported as a the Apple Camera Roll without any album organization. Maybe Apple fault to keep a shutdown door to its Apple Photos application. So do you know if Amazon photos application (on Mac) imports photos from Apple Photos in a album organized way as it is ?
Google Photos limits video “quality” to a certain degree where Amazon Photos doesn’t, but does limit storage to 5GB.
I use both services, but I use Amazon Photos as my cloud storage for all my photos I take with my DSLR camera. I have about 120 GB of photos in RAW format stored on Amazon Photos. The only thing is that from my smartphone I can't seem to open full screen my RAW format photos. I can see them as thumbnails but when I try to open one of them it says that something went wrong. Any idea? The thing about the mpx limit on google photos I didn't know about I don't really like. I would like to store automatically on amazon photos instead of google photos. I'll look at the IFTTT app if there's something with amazon photos. Any other ideas about that? anyone?
thanks again for another great video. for me, I use both. They're both so user-friendly and fast that I like having both just in case something happens to the other but mostly just because I like to see what each format does with the collection. If I had to pick one, it's definitely Amazon. I pay for Amazon Prime anyway and an additional $20 year means I'm covered with all photos and videos. My only small beef with Amazon is that when I create an album and add photos/videos to the album, I'd like for the photos or videos to be removed from the main storage. Also, I don't like how deleting the images from the main area means it is also deleted from the album.
Thank you, Steve. As always, I appreciate your clear, succinct, light hearted presentations. As far as photo apps goes, I am an amateur so I will stick with Google photos. Thanks again for a helpful, informative, presentation.

I have a note 10. Hate Gallery. Have been using Google Photos but when their app was upgraded the editing tools lost many of their 'easy editing tools. I have now started using Amazon photos? PROBLEM: I cannot set Amazon as default . When I want to add an older photo to FB, Instagram, Mercar, Gallery comes up making only a fraction of my photos and only 4 of my photo albums (folders). At this point I can find no way to get to neither, Google nor Amazon. Can you help me? Or connect me to someone who can?
Its true about the photo editing features. I always end up keeping the Samsung's Gallery app for editing pictures as it offers a lot more than the Google's photo app.
LOVE your intro
Wonderful review! Thank you Steve for this clear explanation. 👌🏾 I guess that a couple features have been released since this video...I look forward to your update in 2024. 😉
Nice comparaison. Do you know how they compare about EXIF informations (Geotag, etc.) ?
Which site is better for embedding images on website or message board
Great video Steve I thought Goole photos work much better I still back up the pictures on another hard drive .
Amazon Photos do also work in Norway! I have used it in some years here in Norway!
If I already have an Amazon Prime account, why not use both? Am I missing something? One other question is what happens if I no longer want an Amazon Prime account? Can I choose to get a backpack drive and just back up from Amazon?
THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IMO FOR ORGANIZATION IS THAT AMAZON PHOTO'S SEPERATE YOUR "CAMERA" "CUSTOM FOLDER" AND "SCREENSHOT." Google does NOT do this and instead puts all screenshots in "Camera" and you have to create a custom album to move sets of photos into.
What about sharing albums between several people for dropping all the pictures from different phones and desktops to share for example trip photos or a party photos??
I use both. Here in the UK we don’t have facial recognition with Google, but Amazon Photos does, however, it’s not very accurate and there is no way to make amendments. For instance, it mixes up my Grandson & Granddaughter. There are a lot of comments/complaints about this on the Amazon user forum. My favourite feature with Amazon is how it regularly displays photos from ‘This Day’ in previous years.

I'm in the UK and have been using Google Photos for many years now, it does have facial recognition and it's not a new feature, so perhaps you have the option disabled? In terms of mixing up photos - I'm not sure about Amazon - but on Google, you can tell it when it's incorrectly identified someone, and correct it quite easily. The more times you do this, the better it gets at future photos.
I have been using both. I like Amazon a little better. For me Amazon seems easier to use. Both are good. I like them both.

Steve, thanks for the review. I really liked it. Is there a way to PREVENT Google Photos from deleting photos as an "in sync" process when I delete a photo from my iPhone? Is there a setting we have been missing? Explanation. My wife and I just moved from Google photos to Amazon photos for our cloud storage because as we deleted photos from our iPhones (to create more space), the photos also were deleted from our Google Photos but NOT from Amazon photos. (Grandbaby photos...had my wife not earlier installed the Amazon Photos, there may have been some significant weeping and wailing.) Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks. Bryan
Can you do a video on both these services/applications in terms of 'family sharing'? I have tried both services for the purpose of sharing photos with the entire family and in my experience they both fail. Main reason is both treat the service as one main user and everyone else. The service should reflect the need, one vault that everyone has access, can upload, edit, etc. full access. thx!

Great video... As always... Amazon is my pick because I take everything in raw. Now, it is under 16G, but the next camera I buy will almost certainly have raw in excess of 16G. One question, why have you not done a review of free, or relatively inexpensive, photo editing software? Lightroom is $10 a month for the rest of your life... I do not mind spending $100+ and then using that software for the next 5 or 10 years. But, $1,200 for 10 years is pricy... Also, it looks like Win 10 Photo App does more editing than either Amazon or Google. I would encourage you to add that one next time you do this comparison.
Hello, do Amazon Photos keep the Apple "live photos" format? Thanks
I agree that google is better but have seen few updates to Amazon photo in your video so I will give it another try! One question, base on my past experience, I do a clean install of windows once a year on my machine, I have noticed that none would recognized they have my pictures and they want to uploads all the pictures again, is this still the case or it is getting better?
Steve, I recently purchased a new android tv, and I now have found that after connecting it to my computer, I no longer have the option of viewing the Amazon Photo app from the new tv. Oh Noooo, Mr. Billlllllll! Sorry, I had to say it. I currently use Google photos and have over 58,000 photos on there. I was just informed that in June I will have to start paying for my cloud storage. I am upset because when I started using Google photos, they stated it was free unlimited. They lied like my daddy. So now I have to think about using a different storage, but I wanted to keep everything in one place. 1. Should I or even could I transfer everything I have from Google photos over to Amazon since I have Prime anyway? 2. Or should I stop syncing google photos in May and just start my photos new to sync onto Amazon starting June 2021? 3. If I start using Amazon to sync photos, can I keep the old google photos cloud or would it go away if I no longer use it?
