They could've easily added a permission that pops up 'Do you want to give the website access to advanced hardware statistics?" but no they just straight up block any other website from having it.

I use Firefox, partly because I have a feeling it's not in my interest to give Google Chrome too much market share. It might be annoying for web devs, but we need multiple browser engines. The other part of why I use Firefox is that Firefox is pretty great and I like it.

@@Max_G4 Sending you more ads might be a reason, or ads that are matching the price-range expense of your hardware. For an ads selling company that is also one point to claim we know better than the competition how to serve ads to the user. It also opens up the stage to set up 3-rd party cookies to track anyone. I'm not saying Google did this, but these innocent looking things can and will be abused. Nothing is as innocent as it looks for companies that sell user data.

It's a Chromium (Google Chrome's base) feature, not Google's. He illustrated it's usage in other Chromium based browsers. Also, Google did not invent Chrome, the built it using Chromium. Blame the original coders for Chromium for even putting this there to begin with. Google should have used this to also fix the memory leaking that occurs with KZread. For the KZread thing I've gotten 1mil+ K memory usage from KZread tabs in Chrome when I scroll far enough on any page. I think the worst is when I have the video paused and I scroll through comments (in desktop browser). It also happens sometimes on the home page (recommended) too, when I scroll long enough.

The Chromium project was started by and is maintained and controlled by Google, with some outside developers and organizations submitting patches (which are approved and merged by Google employees in charge of the project). It was partially originally derived from WebKit (developed primarily by Apple) which did not have this hidden extension, which in turn was derived from KHTML (developed by the KDE project) which also did not have this hidden extension.

That said, I think it's been used for more than just 'debugging' as google has had a oddly high rate of knowing how to target hardware to such a level it's insane. There are majore privacy issues at play... but I just can't with some things.
