Google accidentally made the ULTIMATE Smart Home Dashboard!

The Pixel Tablet is a great smart home dashboard, but it took some work to figure it out.

And then what? It doesn't stop working like the software things Google kills. Google has to update it for the promised cycle anyway, so the only thing they can kill is a successor, which has no impact on this device

So glad you are keeping the little gags at the end. Love them!
This was the exact question I had when I saw the Pixel Tablet. Now that I know I can get my HA dashboard on it, I may have to pick one up.
Reed, I think you forgot to mention an important aspect about FKB: it can integrate with HA exposing sensors and switches. I have a smart charging automation that turns on smart plug when the Fire tablets are at 10% battery and off at 90%. I also don't use the camera to turn on the screen as the camera cannot see in the dark. Instead, an automation uses a nearby motion detector to turn the screen on as I enter a room and turns screen off when the room is empty or I leave the house.

Hi! I was using FKB with motion detection from the fire tablet's camera but noticed a significant battery drain - can you elaborate how you used a motion detector to turn on the screen? Thanks in advance!
@d_sellers1
9 ай бұрын
@@sujil In use Node-RED for my automations but the concept still works in HA's automations. Whenever the state of the motion detector changes from off to on, the automation turns on the light entity for screen which is provided by FKB. It then waits until off has been the state for ten minutes and then turns off the screen. (Repeated motion based keeps the ten-minute timer active.) In NR: events:state node, Motion Detector entity, is off, for 10 minutes, msg.payload = entity state. Connect both outputs to a Call Service node with the domain as light, service set to turn_{{payload}} and the Fire Screen entity.

lame, no wonder he didn't mention it. charging automation "feature" is stupid and not worth mentioning, look to wake idea sounds way better than using sensors. that's what everyone thinks of your comment
just got this today. I'm stunned at how good it works so far. Just as fast as an IPAD with alot more customizations. The video screen quality is very good too.
Another great video, Thank you Reed. And love that you linked your setup so that we can look at using if it works for us.
My favorite part about the Pixel Tablet has been telling the kids they can go use the tablet, and they can't find it even though it's sitting right there in front of them. And i guess it is time to download Home Assistant...
I really gotta get into Home Assistant. Love that dashboard. And upgrade my light switches to smart dimmer ones too. Great video as always!

I’ve had mine set up for a few years and my switches CONSTANTLY disconnect or Alexa can’t find them. Very frustrating
I was searching for Pixel Tablet VS Max. Saw this thumbnail and that it was you channel = instantly sold.
One of the better reviews I've seen. One thing I'd mention though is that I've heard that it has the same speaker hardware in the stand as the Google Hub Max. Might want to confirm that as it take away one of your negative points.
Great work Reed! 👍🏻 I'll be doing that with mine, if it ever arrives...
Thank you, very helpful because I have been going back & forth about buying this since it came out.
I've been using Fully Kiosk Browser and ActionTiles on my Fire Tablets for years. They are not near as fast, but Fully works the same way as you showed in the video and I can put 5x 10" Fire tablets designated as smart home dashboards around the house for the same price as the Pixel tablet. But this is a great high end tablet if you want multifunction.

What about video doorbell? Do you hear something, does the video appear on full screen? Do you have Nest doorbell? How is the announcement on the tablet / hub? You forgot to mention these things.
This is exactly what I wanted to see! Thanks for showing that the Google Assistant still works with the dashboard displayed. Is there a way for Hub mode to still display your Google Photo gallery until you walk up to it to launch the HA dashboard - maybe swipe away the photos and instead of going to the Hub home it launches the HA dashboard?

That constant camera feature is awesome!
With how fast tech changes, I didn't want a wall mounted display for my HA. This solves that. Thanks!
Any way to keep the clock screen engaged when docked? I prefer to see that when tablet isn't in use. Tried having it run the clock app but doesn't work. Also, no concerns with leaving your camera on all the time? I notice the green LED on in the video.
First review I’ve seen that mentions Home Assistant, cheers 👍
love your content! I am a newbie here so apologies if this is a silly question, could I modify the dashboard you created to have a multi-camera split view?
GrapheneOS is also available for it pretty soon - which is another awesome usecase! I REALLY like this thing and once I can, I intend to buy it. As a second _SpaceDesk screen, HASS dashboard or just a beautiful notification center for all the stuff that comes in. It seriously is a great piece of kit. And, if your usecases change, it's a Pixel device - ready to reboot, root and do things with!
@kanji.debian

Don't use GrapheneOS, the developer is a narcissistic, cr@zy, mentally ill person. You don't want to use this kind of person's code on your device. It is not safe. Use LineageOS or something else, but not GrapheneOS.
Do you have a guide on your setup? I have the motion/over-lock-screen/etc setup, but I've noticed if I don't reopen the kiosk app prior to tablet going to sleep, it goes back to regular tablet mode.
@SmartHomeSolver firstly great channel. Quick question, can the Pixel be linked with other Hub Maxs to create a speaker group? Specs say pixel tablets can't be linked.. but to other Google Hubs?
I would love an in-depth video on how to.
@SmartHomeSolver can i add any bluetooth speaker to this, to be default speaker after voice command "Play music" like Nest hub allows to do?
Great video :) Thanks. What happens if I want to use the Google Pixel table always in the digital photo frame that displays our family photos and access the home assistant dashboard automation app manually if I need it/want to ? Is that possible ? Like would there be an app shortcut I click on when I unlock my tablet ?
I bought the Pixel tablet for several reasons. I have noticed that if the tablet does not broadcast voice notifications from Home Assistant. For example, when the ring camera detects motion. It sends a broadcast to all the speakers alerting us. It is not coming across the tablet. Have you noticed this? Would you know of a fix? It would be cool if the base still worked as a speaker when the tablet is not docked.
Best video endings on KZread....hands down!!!!!
Hi, super vlog, quick question may I install and use kiosk browser on the android tablet without home assistant?
Does that auto turn on feature if fully kiosk browser also work between the HA dashboard and a picture frame mode?
How are you able to have it enabled over the top of your lock screen without also having it replace your launcher (as Kiosk mode requires)?
@SmartHomeSolver Can you please help me with what kind of lights you are using to control the brightness each ? Any suggestions ?
Does this only integrate with Google Assistant? Can this be directly link from FKB to any(Lutron, Kasa, Ring, Legrand etc?) like Home Assistant?
Doesn't Android already have a kiosk mode if you go into developer settings? My oneplus 8T has that feature which lets you choose any app to have in kiosk mode which I found while mesing with the settings. I assumed it was a stock Android thing
What settings dit you use on the kiosk software? I have downloaded it, but it won't work properly for me.
Nice video, so if I have Nest products throughout my home as in thermostats and smoke alarms, but have Ring for camera devices/doorbell, Sonos for Music....would this solution integrate them all together into a single view/control panel.
How did you get such smooth video from your unifi doorbell? On my dashboard it only refreshes every 5sec
Can you tell me why if I put the HA lovelace on my Google nest the menu that shows me the other tabs doesn't appear? Everything else works fine: buttons, etc.
Best Google tablet review ever
So do you recommend this vs. the max nest or echo?
I just don't get why the separate dock isn't like a pro dock, being sold at more than 100 bucks, it could compete with a amazon echo dot 5. It could be a standalone speaker, have temp, humidity, presence and matter hub. This would just make it perfect.
Went out and got this setup because of this video! Thank you! Trying to figure out how to expose the microphone in HA through kiosk browser so I can use the HA voice assist…… Any Ideas??
Would this work with ring camera? Live feed automatically?

Love your videos. I was just wondering what WiFi router you have, because it seems like you have a TON of things on your network. I currently have 62 items, and if I try adding one more, it causes other things to disconnect. Currently have the TP Link AX50. Thanks in advance!
Help please!! How do I connect the app (Fully kiosk) to my current google smart home account?
Is there a way we can get the dashboard, so we can load it onto our own tablets? Without configuration/creation (a file or a folder that can be copied?)
I like your videos but my question is how is the security of that dashboard into the hacks world as google dashboard updating is credentials all the time as firewall is that dashboard the same let me know thanks
Can you connect this tablet with your phone and use the phone instead if you away from your home or only the tablet controls the stuff
Wow!! This dashboard is great!!🤩
Is it possible to have it act as a picture frame when not in use, when docked, instead of a black screen?
Question for smart home salver, would you have a tutorial step by step setup of what you got ? It's kind of something I'm looking for ?
can you do a video similar with ewelink please ? all my setup is sonoff & i dont want to be hooked to HA .. will this tablet work for me ? i want to use it mainly for rhythm live
thats pretty much the only thing i wanted from my echo show but apparently thats too much to ask and some devices cant even be added to favorites
How many watts does the operation of the tablet require? Thanks!
Does the pixel tablet play nice with ring devices?
@smarthomesolver Any luck using two-way-audio between tablets and Reolink doorbells thru HA?
Wondered if you use this with wireless Nest Cameras, and if having the app open at all times drains the battery of the cameras?
Thanks Reed.
Great Video and very nice Dashboard I like it !! Quick question since you are using a third party app from the play store does this mean any android tablet can do this? I'm trying to see what google pixel necessity is with this setup.. of course a cheap android tablet will have worse performance but this is beside the main question now... Thx keep these videos coming , cheers !
Hey Reed, I've been searching for your tutorial on how you created and setup the Fully Kiosk Browser Dashboard. Can you please send me your link for that so I can setup my Pixel with my smart home devices? Thanks in advance
I have the same but in a just normal cheaper andoird tab. Works just fine. :)
Hello, can you please give links to each product ?
I decided to give this a try. I like it, but I can’t figure out why some of my colors are totally different. Like yellow shows up as almost black. It’s only like this in the Fully browser.
What doorbell do you have ?
Qual marca e modelo do seu tablet ?
@SmartHomeSolver Will this work with Nest Hub (NOT MAX)
This! The way Google teased it last year is that it's going to be better than the hub max. It turns out to be a regular ol' android tablet.
Disappointed to hear the dock speaker isn't as good as the Nest Hub Max, as I've been very happy with that speaker, which has plenty of power and lots of bass.
Hey could any one help me? Please I just moved and my old router had 2.5ghz and 5ghz bands separate but my new router is dual and I can’t set up 2.5ghz separate so I can’t use half of my smart devices. What can I do?
By only charging to 90% you are effectively reducing the charge rate capacity over time. Most chemical batteries enjoy a hysteretic memory which effectivly predisposes a decay rate that is fixed. By reducing charge effectiveness you are accelerating the decay process.
If play store is sideloaded in a fire tablet can this app be downloaded and used? Also will it only display home assistant dashboard or is it able to display hubitat too?
@showmeez
9 ай бұрын
I have been running FKB on Fire 10 tablets and a couple of ancient unbranded chinese tablets as wall mounted displays for a few years, controlling Hubitat (my venerable v2 hub). Add in a photo frame app scrolling from your backups and they make nice features when not in use. Older hardware has tradeoffs, it can feel a bit slow when accessing video feeds for example, but I find it a generally good experience. Certainly at the price point.
Is there an alternative/something similar for Echo devices?
can this be done on any tablet? i would like to install a tablet in my wall and plugged in
Can you mount the dock to the wall?
I purchased the Pixel tablet because a tablet is the only device I didn't already own and I wanted one but didn't want to go off the reservation to buy one. I didnt know the debate about tablets was so fierce until I started researching them. The Pixel tablet for me is the perfect compromise as far as versatility and price is concerned because its just a toy for me to play with and nothing more.
What dashboard app do you use
I really love the concept of the Google Pixel Tab but I wish that Apple would do the same, while improving on it, as I also wish it have : 1. 120Hz Always-on (1Hz) tandem-stack OLED display (always-on is very important) 2. Airfuel (Witricity) (and maybe also Qi2) wireless charging to be able to recharge by « sticking » the device to a dock (speaker, but also VESA dock,…). Airfuel wireless charging allow for more positioning freedom and higher distance (a few inches) wireless charging. 3. Multi 10Gbits/s and low latency 60Ghz WiGig (802.11ay) wireless docking functionality to wirelessly access to external I/O (USB-C, USB-A, Ethernet, HDMI,…) 4. Several types of sensors integrated (temperature, presence detection,…) 5. It would be cool if the base still worked as a wireless smart speaker with assistant and cast functionalities, when the tablet is not docked. The base should also have a small screen (but as big as possible like 4 to 6 inches) to indicate date, time, weather and music playing to still be usable on its own as a bedside smart alarm clock,… and be easily readable from afar… This would open plenty more use cases….
I was super excited about this video until I heard the price! I use Amazon Fire tablets with Full Kiosk for my dashboard now, and they work well, with the exception being that mine drop Wifi connections all the time and won't reconnect when that happens. Otherwise they work great, and they cost me $60/each. :S
Is home assistant compatible with smart things and ring doorbell. I love your layout looks very useful. Thanks for the video.

What brand is your couch? It looks super comfortable 😅
I was a bit let down with the control center as well, but was planning on seeing what I could do about it. This seems like a great solution, as I was worried about leaving my tablet unlocked. I see that the tablet is always off with this setup when it doesn't detect motion. Does this mean you can't use the photo frame feature of the tablet in this config?
Duuuude I just bought a Fire HD because of your other video 😆🙃
Personally, I'd get a touch screen and a raspberry pi and build one myself, but this seems to work pretty good as well.
Suggestion for door bell. Browser_mod 2, when someone is at the door it pops up the Camera feed. Secondly Wallpannel makes it into a picture frame...
Thank you very much Reed! I have a very important question to ask you. I currently own a Nest Guard security system. This system will no longer be supported by Google next April. What should I do? It is my understanding that it communicated on a proprietary signal (not zwave or zigbee). I believe all my sensors will be useless. Watching your previous video on how Ring will charge to simply get notifications had me thinking. I liked how it communicated on zwave. Do all the sensors work with zwave and home assistant, or just the keypad and door sensors? Also I like the fact that it could be monitored. Even if I used it out of the box as is and knowing it might be able to use as a stand alone system with HA, is much better than losing all the money I spent on the system like I soon will be with my Nest stuff. Anyway. Could you please do a video on your top choices for Alarm systems, monitored and not, HA integrated if possible? It would be a great help for us Nest Guard users. Thanks
