I have recently looked at the Sony XDR-P1DBP ( • Goods In #30 - Sony XD... ) and the Sony XDR-S61D ( • Goods In #31 - Sony XD... ) and felt the need to complete the set with the middle-sized radio in the set. I love these minimal and clean designs from Sony, and although the S41D doesn't sound as good as the S61D, it's still a fantastic digital radio which is perfect for smaller spaces.

If you're reading this & thinking of getting one, do it. They're brilliant along with the bigger model. This one is like the little brother!
Very nice Review !
Very nice review - many thanks!
Got the same...in white. Great little radio's
I'm most interested in how it sounds which he hardly talked about. I'm concerned it won't be loud enough.
Would you be able to do a little scientific test comparing the sensitivity of the 3 radios, I've got the S41D currently and am currently looking for any more sensitive radios, I'm perfectly happy with my S41D atm but one of my hobbies is searching for DX radio stations so I'm always looking for the best, If you could even recommend any other sensitive radios thats you've maybe seen. Cheers
For portability and autonomy the JBL Tuner 2 I like very much. At the moment contemplating a Kenwood CR-ST50DAB-B. To be used on mains and batteries as has a clock/alarm function.

@@tdcattech Tried the Kenwood, a dissapointment in terms of reception. Ended up with a Peaq PDR180BT-B. Great reception, built in battery that at this point is still going after 6 hours. Also has a clock and 2 alarms. I tried to like the Kenwood but reception was poor at best.
Mooie Radio
How do these hold up against the JBL Tuner models? They are about the same price as for what the JBL Turner 2 can currently be found.
Is it possible to set the alarm to only weekdays?
Does the 41 retains the settings and presets after changing the batteries? Thanks!
So which Sony have better sensitivity? Thank you.
Any thoughts on the micro usb connector that is in the battery compartment concealed behind a screwed in plastic cover. Is it an engineering port, power supply or meant for some type of rechargeable battery pack?
Pretty shallow review. Do the preset stations remain when changing batteries, how easy is the switch between mains and battery, do you have to power down first?

Hi, thank you 4 the video! I got that model but I have something that intrigue me. When the radio is connected AC and turned ON, when you disconnected to switch to the batteries the radio turn OFF. Same thing happens when you plug it again. It's a bit annoying, and I think is normal but if anyone can tell about their experience...
Good review 👍 At 13:06 you're saying Sony XDR-P1DBP is the most sensitive from the 3 shown models. Is this statement valid for DAB or just for FM ? (DAB interests me)
Hi, there, I’m wondering if the headphone out is stereo?
Good review, what do you think of the Sony XDR-S61D a few months later?

Hey mate , have a look at the Tecsun 660 or 680. Not DAB but will blow you away! 👊🏻

@@tdcattech Hi mate, yea I have four Tecsuns. S2000, 660, 9012 and 368. They are all top notch radios. I never went with 880 as it’s sort of similar to what I have but I’m told it is good for SW and SSB For me the 660 is superb. It has Airband too which is fun. The 680 is allegedly the next one up but I’ve had them both on the bench and the inner workings are the same, just a slightly bigger speaker (which you don’t need on this sort of radio). I’d look at the 660 or 680 if you want a good radio with Airband or the 880 for SW and SSB no Airband. Many people will say that the Airband on Tecsuns are deaf - it’s not. You just have to tune in well. Example - Gatwick Tower is normally 24.225 but Tecsuns seem to get it at full clarity at 24.224 which is as god as but that .1 seems to make all the difference. I like the fact that you can recalibrate the Tecsuns too! So … I’m thinking of the Sony XDR S41. Would you recommend it? Any probs? Happy to chat more on Tecsuns but how about the Sangean 909x2! Ooooooh that’s a bit special! Laurie
Hola.

I guess Sony decided to exclude Bluetooth to give JBL more sales.
Could I hook it up to my car radio via the headphone jack and out my car speakers?
@tdcattech

If your car has an auxiliary in, no reason why not. It would be a pretty clunky solution though and reception in vehicle probably wouldn’t be optimal. 📻
Does the radio start with the same volume level as it was switsched off?

No. It's one of the better DAB radios of this type. Few of them seem to be as good as, say, a Bluetooth speaker of the same price but this is OK.

@@tdcattech Thank you for your reply, I was also looking at the Roberts Play 10 I’ve heard that the sound isn’t very good but at the price at £44 it’s quite good, have you heard this one before, doesn’t seem too be many reviews on KZread
Just bought this radio (in black though). Well... Not overly happy with it - especially considered its price. First of all it got a significant hiss noticeable on lower volumes. Below 8 or so is unusable. So no quiet radio in a silent room. Then the sensivity which is OK but given the price I had expected more. Even a 19 dollar (or so, my currency is DKK) DAB from a local cheap store has better reception and lower noise in the speaker at low volumes. That said sound quality is better on the Sony and using headphones it's very good. But I'm really disappointed about the hiss - not what I expect from a brand name like Sony. Been to a couple of stores to take a listen to their radio and while in a noisy store putting the ear very close to the speaker - they're all the same. Hope they'll soon come out with a replacement adressing those issues. And yeah the text scrolling is a bit annoying but that I can live with.
Impossible to connect Bluetooth headphones to this device...

You have to wonder why they have a barrel connector for 5 volts, when a generic USB connector would have been more flexible at the same price.

I agree. They make beautiful stuff but they also do stupid things like this. Why lock people into carrying around a dedicated 5V mains adapter when a nice USB-C input would allow many more options. In Sony's defence, I guess it prevents people trying to use USB power devices not suited for the radio's requirements or just faulty in some way and Sony getting the hit with technical support enquiries.

@@tdcattech Looking at the original Sony's power adapter it looks like they're had to put some extra ferrites to prevent radio/ground/mains interference degrading the reception (especially in DAB mode). So I defend the idea of a separate power socket/cord/adapter.

The small USB-micro that has been used in my Geneve XS, and in many other devices, stopped functioning after some few years. In addition, it is difficult to connect it whitout having to switch on the light in the middle of the nigth. I am lookig for a new DAB radio, because of that USB(-micro) connector. USB-C would probably have been a better solution than the USB-micro.

Sorry for my late reply. Inside the battery compartment there is cap hold by a screw, by removing it you will find a micro USB. I use it to supply the radio.
Ordered this model online then I swiftly sent it back. I didn’t like that tuning lever couldn’t get used too that, it kept going up/down the station that I hadn’t selected, also felt like it would snap off eventually. Volume knob laggy also. Bit overpriced for what it is can get better for much less

If you’ve got the space, definitely. It’s a much better sounding radio. The price difference used to be a lot bigger than 8 pounds though so it sounds like you have a good price on the 61D.
In low volume it has a background noise, on fm and dab. I usually listen on very low volume...at level 3 to 4 it sounds like an old shortwave radio. Am very disappointed and sent mine back :(
We can't get DAB so it is worth nothing to me.
