GoodFellows Live: The War in Israel and the War at Home | GoodFellows

Recorded live at the Hoover Institution’s fall retreat: Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson, H.R. McMaster, and John Cochrane discuss unfolding events in the Middle East-Israel’s response, failures in intelligence gathering, plus America’s strategic choices vis-à-vis a complicit Iran. The trio then reflects on what an anti-Israeli backlash on the campuses of America’s elite universities-students and faculty denouncing the initial victims as aggressors, university leaders offering only lackluster “word salads”-says about the current state of higher education in the United States.
ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a weekly Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

And indeed, We have destroyed your likes; then is there anyone that will remember (or receive admonition)? [Al-Qamar 54:51] غُلِبَتِ الرُّومُ The Romans have been defeated. And We made them a precedent (for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. They were arrogant on the earth without right, and they said: "Who is mightier than us in strength?" See they not that Allah who created them was mightier in strength than them? And they used to deny Our Ayat (Signs). And your forces will be of no avail to you, however numerous they be; and verily, Allah is with the believers. How often a small group overcame a mighty host by Allah's Leave?" And Allah is with As-Sabirun (the patient). [Al-Baqarah 2:249] وَلِيُمَحِّصَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَيَمْحَقَ الْكَافِرِينَ And that Allah may test the believers and destroy the disbelievers. [Ãal-'Imraan 3:141] قُل لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا سَتُغْلَبُونَ وَتُحْشَرُونَ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ ۚ وَبِئْسَ الْمِهَادُ Say to those who disbelieve: "You will be defeated and you will be gathered together to Jahannam (Hell-Fire), and worst indeed is that place to rest." [Ãal-'Imraan 3:13] وَعْدَ اللَّهِ ۖ لَا يُخْلِفُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (It is) a Promise of Allah, and Allah fails not in His Promise, but most of mankind know not. يَعْلَمُونَ ظَاهِرًا مِّنَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ هُمْ غَافِلُونَ They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world, and they are of the Hereafter, heedless. Having followed The Good Fellows for a while, you can see just how concerned they are in this frank talk on illiberal ideology across western society. I’m committed to teaching my kids on history, basic economics and gratitude for the stability supported by the US across the world. We in west have been busy living the ‘good life’ I fear we’ll all realise to soon the real price for our values and freedoms. Thx u from 🇦🇺 for sharing these talks 🙏🏻

Hi, I'm here to thank you all for talking about Iranian people and about supporting us in overthrowing this criminal regime. We've been through so many lies from this regime that we've almost become experts on what's going on around the world in therms of "politics". IRI is definitely behind all the disruption in the region and consequently in the whole world. It's in everyone's interest to support us in ending this bloodthirsty regime's terrorist mindset. It's clear as a day to most Iranians now that Israel is not the evil country our regime tried to sell to us and they have our full support. People quickly shut down any official or celebrity who speaks for people of Iran when it comes to their obsession with Israel. Our prince in exile, Reza Shah Pahlavi II, has been saying this for years. IRI isn't able to change. The only solution is regime change. He is the best alternative and the only person Iranians trust and want. I am going to watch the full video now. Thankfully Iran will be free soon and you're going to learn more about iranians' view of the world. #iraniansstandwithisrael #HamastieswithIRGC

And the real Iran always stands. whith love from Iran ♥️ #iranianstandwhithIsrael

McMasters was a clown, as usual. I only dipped into this video, but ran across a couple instances. There was (a) his insistence that Egypt would have to help because they would otherwise be overrun with Gaza refugees. Um, no, unlike the US with its southern border Egypt has had had no problem with just saying "No". And (b) his advocacy of continuing to state impossible goals for Ukraine because if we don't ask for the moon we won't maximize what we will get. No, insisting on asking for Crimea with no bow to reality merely means that the war will go on until Ukraine is utterly defeated. And in a university setting it's his obligation to speak the truth, not strike supposedly useful poses. This is the guy who on a previous Goodfellows advocated using the USN to escort "humanitarian" aid into Ukraine via the (very restricted -- think hypersonic missiles and fish in a barrel) Black Sea and sink the Russian Black Sea fleet if they interfered. Never mind that the Ukrainian problem was getting to EXPORT grain not a shortage of food (McM seemed utterly impervious to this well known fact) I well remember VDH rolling his eyes at such idiocy.

Why American campuses and faculty lounges have become hotbeds of ant-Israeli sentiment and activism is an interesting topic for in-depth study. In my time as a History graduate at a leading American university in the 1990s and early 2000s, I would say at least half (and possibly more) of my professors, both in the History and other departments, were Jews of one stripe or another (one or two were even Israelis). Academia is easily one of the sectors of American life in which Jews are most prominent (and statistically overrepresented). By contrast, during five years in the u.S. military I encountered only a tiny handful of Jews but very strong institutional pro-Israel sentiment.

In my lifetime every president from Harry Truman to present has attempted to broker a peace deal, the Mideast is like the Korean peninsula outside players use the continuous conflict for their diplomatic purpose... this a dangerous game to play in the Nuclear age. I want Barack Obama and Joe Biden on as joint-guests. I think a conversation or two between the Goodfellows and them would be the most important possible conversations that could help shape American policy right now.

Neil's got a good point on the K-12. I'm mildly surprised that we haven't seen pro Hammas kindergarten demonstrations.

I'm glad to hear the panel optimistic about Universities. I hope we can purge the cancel culture perpetrators. Then we might train a generation of leaders who aren't afraid to win wars. We need to fight Hamas and Putin in the classrooms and boardrooms.

Get vocal about inviting other opinions on the campus. Protect the venue, the speaker, and prevent Antifa, etc. from attending - they aren't paying the tuition.. Insist on them as an obligation to the student body and as fiduciary of the investment. And gentlemen, please continue to keep us informed, you are trustworthy.

I understand the term "useful idiot", but to whoms use are they attributed to? The money supporting liberalism is a good thing, but the elements that steer it need analyzing for it to be put to the benefit of humanity. The freedom to fight for one's beliefs is of primary importance in any democracy, which is what this whole discussion is about.

To help Iranians overthrow the regime, the first step would be for the western governments to fully understand that this regime is not reformable and thus negotiations are a waste of time. Additionally, you should realize that the vast majority of Iranians want to bring back the Pahlavi monarchy. The best way you could help us is to support our exiled crown prince, Reza Pahlavi; since he reflects our voice.

Interesting analysis of the short term. The question is what about the long term. Do we have to go through this every 10 years. The Jewish/Muslim conflict is a clash of cultures. The solution is to find the Jews a new homeland or a change in culture of both cultures. Not an easy or even a doable task
