GOODBYE VLM AIRLINES: Fokker 50 Full Flight - London City to Antwerp
In August 2018 I finally managed to get a flight onboard a Fokker 50. I took a flight with VLM Airlines onboard their Fokker 50 from London City to Antwerp. Little did I know that just a week after my flight, VLM Airlines would enter liquidation and cease operations, thus ending scheduled Fokker 50 operations in Europe.
Our flight today begins outside the small terminal at London City Airport. We enter the terminal and make our way to security, before heading to the departure lounge and watching the movements at this tiny but busy airport. Before long our aircraft arrives from Antwerp and we proceed to board this 27 year old aircraft, originally delivered to Brazilian airline Rio Sul in 1991! Soon the Pratt & Whitney engines spool into life and we taxi to runway 27, before making a leisurely departure over the city of London. We make our way towards Dover and out over the English Channel where we are served breakfast and coffee. Before long we start our descent over Belgium, being handed a mint (a rarity these days). We are soon on our final approach over the fields of Flanders, before touching down on schedule at Antwerp Airport. We disembark the aircraft and make our way through the tiny airport of Antwerp to the taxi ramp.

Thanks for the memories. I used to fly with VLM on average once a week to Brussels (mainly) or Antwerp on business, over a period of 3 years. In those days VLM operated the majority of flights out of LCY and the apron would be dominated by its F50s. A sad end to what was a delightful little airline operating a great aircraft.

Nice the way you captured the sights and sounds of this turbo-prop aircraft both on the ground and in the air. Admittedly, the F.50 is one "Muther-Fokker" airliner! Thanks for sharing!

My dad is a pilot on the Fokker 50 and works on ”Amapola Flyg AB” in sweden, and i think i have flown with him 50 sectors (i think, or more) And i can say one thing, if you have the chance to fly this beautiful aircraft, TAKE IT. I know this airplane from my long jumpseat experience and it is a beautiful sound! Sorry for my bad english (i am 12 and from sweden)

@@rooneydoodle A jump seat is a third seat almost all airliners have today, it’s commonly a foldable seat in the back center of the cockpit between the two pilots.

Really sad news about VLM, Antwerp is a great city well worth visiting
I worked as a sales and operations agent at an airtaxi company called TRAVAIR when VLM started at ANR. The founder was Freddy Van Gaever. I met him a few times. Very sympathetic person. He died December 15, 2017.
VLM and SKYWORK ..almost at the same day,its difficult for small airlines to compete with the giants of the aviation industry, especially now with very high fuel prices,sorry for the people who lost their jobs
Amapola Flyg uses Fokker 50 on passenger flights in Sweden :)

Great video and really sorry for the ones which will be unemployed as I am right now. Just adding info: Fokker 50 is still alive in InselAir, flying between the Caribbean Islands. I don't know if there are more units flying over the Americas because they aren't so often here.

Always wanted to fly on the Fokker 50 and I was booked on Zurich to Antwerp on the 28th September. Wish I'd booked sooner.
quick note it's VLM antwerp that ceased operations.

You can see the British airways e-190 trim being tested about 17 mins in
WOW they lasted less than a year after re-starting. Pretty poor performance.

Yes I agree. I missed out on the chance first time round, but fortunately I had need to fly from London City a couple of weeks ago and I managed to get an F50 as one of my flights. So sad to hear they are out of business again.

I was a passenger on a Fokker 50 flying EDLN EGLC also operated by VLM in the late 90s. It was my first flight on a turbo prop before I became a regular passenger on regional (Finnair) flights ( EFHK EFTP ) on planes long retired by Finnair ( maybe ATR-72 ).

Noel would you ever consider flying from London City to New York via Shannon on the A318? Small aircraft with only 32 business class seats. Flying with British Airways flight number BA1, if your wife lets you overspend in luxury. Or might have enough BA air-miles to get a discount of the airfare.

What always fucks me up: Almost no camera seems to be able to record sound. Turboprops are not that quiet in reality.
