Twoset likes to joke around that they suck and “demonstrate” it by playing, but keep in mind that musicians they react to have been practicing their piece for MONTHS, whereas Twoset would play the same piece without practice. With 20+ years of experience, and having played in orchestras (and even been concert masters), it’s impossible for them to suck. They may not be as good as soloists, but they’re far from bad. It always disheartens me when I see comments on their serious playing videos like “I forgot they could actually play.” Even when they joke around, how isn’t it obvious they’re very skilled in the craft? Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I can't help but think about how teachers are in some ways the ones who "create" prodigies. I'd love to know more about prodigies teachers methods actually. I have the feeling they tackle teaching violin a different way as our usual conservatory teachers. Hats off to the prodigies for sure, you do need talent and dedication at a young age, but what if the results are mostly on the teachers ? It would be so great to get in touch with one of those teachers one day. Weren't Ray and Hilary children prodigies themselves ? Brett and Eddy, my hopes are on you to investigate 😎.

just a personal story but my cousin is actually a prodigy. I remembered just came to his house one day not knowing anything and he just play a whole classical piece on piano in front of me when he is like 5-6, 7 years old? He played so well that at first I thought it's a prank, something must have been record the piece and play it back. His parent said he saw this stuff on youtube and became obsessed with the piano and has been watching tutorial online on his own and that's that. So back to your question, no doubt they need good teacher to enter and win competition like Menuhin or become pro, but because I witnessed a prodigy myself I can't stop myself thinking that some kids are just really something. Probably there are no teacher with special skill that turn kids to prodigy, but simply good teacher that teach prodigy.

My theory turns more to individual practice (though the teacher might help a lot in knowing how to practice and in motivating the student). As a psych major I did a project comparing my childhood experience training in piano with my friend's (now professional violinist) experience training in violin. We starting the same year at the same place, but the outcome was extremely different and I found that *how* we practiced (not even the amount of time, because at some point I practiced twice as more as she did!) had a lot to do with it. Of course, the teacher needs to be encouraging. And of course background, like having a musician in the family helps too, because you can actually see what efficient practice is like!

Meanwhile two set is sight shredding and still getting a decent sound on first try Like come on! I feel like it's easy to take for granted how insane it is for these CHILDREN to be as talented as they are. Basically every one of the contestants is more talented than many adult professionals and yet they are so young. They have dedicated their entire lives up to this point to playing their instrument for the rest of us to enjoy.

I feel like that's what people don't realize about child prodigies, they've been fine-tuning (hah) their art at the cost of a "normal" childhood. They've focused on doing *one thing* for a decade. Personally not sure how to feel about it, I spent my childhood trekking around canyons looking for lizards and rough-housing with friends. Plus, developed a diverse skill set in the meantime. If these kids just happen to not make it as musicians, they're screwed.

Confidence allows that. If you want to up your playing, let your body join in with your brain and you'll may just wow yourself.
