@@TheEleatic Hello and thanks for the note. I agree re Stings band. I saw them in Ft. Lauderdale Fl in the late 80’s. Monsters, all of them. But, Mitchell’s band that I commented on is one of the groups that paved the way and inspired super groups as Sting put together I imagine. Just my opinion, but I’m a bit biased for personal reasons of course. Take care.

These may just be the saddest and most hopeful lyrics in one song ever. The horror of hatred and the promise of love that transcends hate… The great Joni wrote this while staying with the band at Mingus’ place, I read somewhere. The lyric is a lot of what Mingus had lived through and experienced, mingled with Joni’s story and commentary. And then there’s this stellar band performing this so beautifully and intricate. Touches me every time I hear it.

@skineyemin4276
3 жыл бұрын
Name the other styles that she has mastered.., other than what she sung on her Mingus album of which Mingus composed the melody including the tenor sax solo that Joni wrote lyrics to the already existing melody. She is unique and has her own amazing style and the music she writes (at least since Jaco played with her) required high level musicians to perform it well, many of whom were jazz musicians. But, as far as styles.., I haven't heard Joni do an Aretha Franklin type record, a 1970s Sly Stone type of recording, any black gospel music. Joni's music was her own genre.

@@skineyemin4276 Yes,and I don`t think she does classical either.I was referring to her growth as a musician playing folk,rock a bit of country and a bit of jazz.Way before her Mingus collaboration she did "Twisted",Jon Hendricks` lyrics to a Wordel Grey blues solo.I agree she is a style all to herself.Very few artists can do everything.She is a pretty good painter too.There is a You Tube video on her that is about 1 1/2 hours long that covers her career from her youth in Canada,to Laurel Canyon onward.It gave me a much greater appreciation for her accomplishment.

It's so nice to realize ,that the puplic (that time it was usual on jazz concerts) listens strong to the music , they "feel" parallel ,what the music and (!) text says ,so they are 100 % involved in it . Not like today, where almost all the musical stuff on a concert must be just fast and loud to be mentioned and reacted positively . Anything else would be reacted as "boring"......very sad,where the today public has been changed . And sometimes musicians are responsible for that as well (I mean the way,how many of them play today) ,not only the media and the people in the public....this project is timeless ,musically absolutely on top in jazz history . A real milestone of the chamber music in jazz .

Boy, great memories... saw this tour, was blown away. As others have commented, the musicianship is as good as you will ever hear. Poignant, also to think that Jaco Pastorius was killed some few years after the tour, I think over drugs. I feel blessed to have seen the show.
Poor Lester Young , and all those Jazz masters back then in the USA. I listened to this album for so many years and had no visual. The lyrics of 'Mingus' are personal to me. Joni is a poet❤
Good lord Joni is 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Impeccable vocals!!!
"All Stars Big Band"! One of the greatest performances... Respect to Joni, Michael, Jaco, Pat, Lyle & Don!

Lovely lovely Mitchell at her best
Joni, Jaco, Pat, Lyle do I say more this is just to good what a great lineup of true talent!!!!
Joni explored so many styles of music and mastered them all.No one genre could contain her.What a soul she has,unafraid to plunge into different directions musically and spiritually.
@skineyemin4276

Why would you expect her to cross Soul when her voice is not suited to this syllable style. Folk, Folk Pop, Folk/ Rock think Dog eat Dog, Folk/ Jazz/ R&B, 194O ballads and straight out Jazz is a marvellous range of style/genre of music.

Thank you Pat that was Great!
Joni's singing is SO CLEAN!!
Incredible lyrics and delivery. Joni…whoa.
That's one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard ...
Soooooooooo much talent, what an absolute joy to hear..
