The biggest problem is the water for me. In summer I've often need to carry 2 or 3L of water in my mountain trips (french Alps). On my FS frame there is only one place for mounting a 800ml bottle, far not enough...

I love the packless setup!!! Spending the little bit extra on my new ride to get this way from the get go.

Storing kit in the bike is great if you only have 1 bike. Being able to grab a pack containing everything and just jump on whichever bike you decide to use is a no brained. If you don't want to use a backpack, use a hydration hip pack

I recently went the everything back on the bike route with the intention of ditching my hydration pack. I really like not having the pack on me, but there are times when I still grab my pack for a ride. Nice to see all the cool Granite stuff and real world reviews. Last time I pieced everything together, next time I'll grab the Granite tools!

Thanks for the video. I appreciate your time doing this. However, I go a very, and simpler way to keep the pack off my back. A saddle bag that fits everything you mentioned, capability wise, in one easy to access place. The route you suggested has two issues. Hanging tools from the frame in plane sight is both ugly and a pain when cleaning the bike. Also, having to remove my star nut, bar ends, and tools from behind the bottle cage is an extra step not necessary with saddle bag. As far as a super light weight tube, a good idea in theory, if you live in rocky areas you will blow tubeless tire out and having a regular size tube is a better option. The only thing I end up hanging from the frame is my hand pump. Anyway, thanks again. Cheers, Robert

6:55 Keep in mind this will be covered in sand, mud, gravel, possibly poop, and if a regular tube is used it can easily get damaged. I prefer to keep everything dry and clean, so I don't have to clean this kind of stuff too. Also keeping everything in the backpack, means I can borrow other ppls bikes and still have the tools I need, or walk around with all tools to help others on a group ride. I ride in snow, mud, so it will be a mud bath, and ride on sand and gravel covered asphalt, and on gravel paths, so it makes a grinding paste. But it's a different use scenario. I also do long rides far away from home too, I need to have everything I have, and with my back issues I don't want to reach down for bottles, nor ride with a hardtail on such trails, but with my back I have to be careful and stop, take breaks, and sometimes just take it easy, nor during techy rides, a bladder is easier.

To each their own! I keep my spare tube and supplies wrapped in a little neoprene holster (used for bear spray!) and attached securely to the frame with a rubber ski strap.

Old water bottle has all the tools and spare tire. Rides on downtube so it gets muddy. Other bottle holder has water. Done.

These bar end tools require an allen wrench to remove the tools when you need them??

  • @mtbboy1993

Backpacks can be quite fatiguing on the shoulder, collar bone area, but then there is USWE, it reduced or eliminates this issue, also is more secure, easier to put on and take off, one size fits all as they have straps you can adjust and put into two different loops. as long as you don't have chest plate too high or back pack strops on top of a neck brace it is most comfortable backpack I've ever worn.

Get a good multitool. You will have a tire lever, chain breaker, Allen keys etc. You can ditch those bar end tools. Topeak has a good selection

i was considering the tubeless repair, can you get the plug in before all the air escapes?

  • @chris4536

    @chris4536

    Жыл бұрын

Yeah if you can cover the leak with a finger or get a friend to hang on to it so you can grab a tire plug! Depends how big the hole is really. With my last puncture I ran over a 2" nail and it held itself in the tyre as I rode the last 4km or so back home! The sealant helped minimize air loss and kept me rolling. You never really can predict what will happen but it pays to be prepared with plugs and a pump at least. Always worth carrying a spare tube just incase you or someone messes up and needs a plan b! Cheers!

what about 14F/-10C ? with proper clothing it's not an issue, and don't use wax based lube, that stops working in -5C, chain won't shift properly, same might happen with the hub, so use a lube.but was between 0 and 12C the past few days here in Norway. I live in the east part, so not as cold, nor does the winter last as long, but it's more unstable weather. So can be mix of UK weather and full on snow winter, and back and forth, and Jan and Feb is always coldest, and ice might last until march, but seems like it's ending early this time. The studded tyres might come off soon. still some areas with thick ice.

In that case you would want a pack. But for those 10-20 mile rides a water bottle should be just fine

Putting stuff else where does not reduce weight. That's what it you are saying make it sound like. which does not make any sense. My bike does not have bottle mounts, this is do increase strength of the tubes. I carry too much stuff to stuff in a bike. Spares: bash guide plate zipties Fumpa digital electronic mini compressor/pump shock pump Dynaplug, but not used it yet handpump, I don't carry a tube, but I use inserts, and never had to remove my tyres, so no tyre levers for me, can run the Cush Core as a runflat if I ride carefully. Wolftooth Pack pliers, I can take the chain off, store spare chain links, but the tool also is perfect for tightening barrel adjusters on mechanical brakes, so they don't loosen. But I use hydraulic brakes. spare rear derailleur hanger 16mm hex tool for cap on the Race Face Cinch cranks, it's not often it comes loose, but if it does, and I forgot to check the cranks. spare shoe laces 4 spare go pro batteries, heavy battery bank to charge my phone. but during the winter I have to keep all battery related stuff in my jacket. Lezyne Rap 14 multi tool, yes I need all of the tools for my bike, and potentially group rides for others, random ppl I help while on a ride. Lezyne rear light mounted to the back of the helmet. During summer 3L bladder filled up is a must. passport, wallet Polar Pro Nd filters for Gopro Hero 7 hand sanitiser nitrile gloves for working on my or other ppls bikes, and not get my hand or gloves greasy, oily, covered in black goo. During colder seasons it might include: jacket or extra jersey. and if it gets really cold I just wear the wind and waterproof jacket, trousers, and have thick wool gloves on underneath 1 size too large riding gloves with nitrile gloves between, this works for 0 to -10C, but if -5c and foggy it might feel like -10C, sometimes much lower so then 2 sizes too big riding gloves with thick Defeet marino wool gloves and thin brynje classic marino gloves, and of of course nitrile gloves for wind and water proofing, this should work for -10C and lower too, if intensity is not too low, it can still get quite cold with all of this, so keep moving.

No thanks. We discovered way back in the 80s, the idea is to get the weight off the bike so the bike isn't sluggish or have that weight throwing it around.
