Goodbye Canon | Why I switched back to LUMIX (S5IIX Review)

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I share my experience switching from the Lumix GH5 to the Canon system and why I went back to Lumix after trying the Canon R6 for a bit over a year or so.
I'm now using the Panasonic Lumix S5IIX and after testing the camera for more than three months, this is my practical review of it. I hope it helps make your decision a bit easier. Let me know if you have any questions, and I hope you enjoy the video!

Coming from Blackmagic cameras that's why I got Panasonic instead of Sony fx30 because I can record braw and external ssd recording, so it fits my workflow which I am used to already using blackmagic cameras

I knew what BRAW was before I got into cameras 📷 😁 Basically coming from a visual effects background & having DaVinci Resolve experience. The BM Pyxis 6K would still appeal more to me with its internal BRAW, box design, and menu system which I think is the most user friendly there is, but that's probably subjective.

Regarding the sharpness (same applies to noise reduction): When not in VLOG, you have the option to go from 0 to -5 and to +5. When in VLOG, you have the option to go from 0 to 10. That is the same idea, with 0 being the equivalent of the -5 of the other modes. So it is still 10 grades of adjustment, starting on the lowest. This is how I see it. Cheers from another S5IIX owner! 🙂

exactly. There is no sharpening at 0. RAW is even sharper and there is no processing.

I own one of these beasts since last december...I really enjoy to make video and also photography...both professionally. And yes...reliability is it´s name. And the color science (I come from Canon too)...the presence of the camera, the character...I´m really happy with it.

@@ThiloWitting yes not specifically with Canon per say but a lot of brands are hyped especially on KZread all have their pros and cons. This is a great example of a budget camera that just performs well from what I have soon. I need to buy one to actually see for myself though.

Speaking of 4K 120fps... maybe Lumix should try and get the 12MP sensors that Sony uses in the ZV-E1, since it has a much faster readout. Maybe put it in the same S5 II / IIX body (to save costs), since they are using the smae body for the G9 II as well. Add a dedicated timecode input and sell it for the same price as the S5 II. (The timecode input could be a similar solution to what the a7S III has now where you buy an optional cable and plug it in to the USB-C port.)

THE FATAL FLAW that killed it for me was that the camera "forgets" the focus point in MF mode when switched off and on ( when using non focus clutch lenses ) !

For Fuji and I guess some Panasonic shooters if you want to soften your image: Open Davinci -> Go to the Colour Page > Add 'Soften and Sharpen' to a node in your footage > Go to Soften & Sharpen effect, set the settings to: Small Texture: -.350 Medium Texture: 0.000 Large Texture: 0.000 ADJUST SMALL TEXTURE GRANULARITY Small Texture Size: 0.150 That's a great baseline for reducing the level of sharpening in your footage. From there, modify to your taste. So yes, very easily adjustable.

Have you seen the olpf filter upgrade from Kolari? Might help with the overall sharpness and gets rid of moire. I’m using anamorphic lenses on my S5ii x so it’s definitely not too sharp for me.

I'm using the Blazar Remus lenses. I sold my Sirui lenses and got the PL mount Blazars with the amber flares. It's interesting because even though they are 1.5 instead of 1.6 the Blazars have more anamorphic character to them. Also I like that you can mount the PL lens sideways for doing vertical anamorphic.@@ThiloWitting

I’m considering going from the Canon R6 to the S5iix but I’m hesitating bc the R6 has such great AF & tracking on the PhOTO side especially for things like wildlife. I shoot hybrid but definitely don’t want to feel like I’m downgrading on the photography side. I also shoot using Flashpoint strobe lights and want to make sure the s5iix works well with them. Any thoughts? Would you recommend the switch for me as a photographer who wants to also do video? Thanks!

  • @ThiloWitting

Hey, puh hard to tell since I’m rarely taking pictures, but I find the AF on the S5iix mich better then the Canon R6 AF which often disappointed me. But I’m not sure how reliable this is for wildlife since ofc here you need a super fast AF. Maybe in this case try to rent the camera for a day or two and try it in action of this could be worth the switch. I made some videos of dogs here and there and the af was working great for me, but yeah better you test this for yourself before making the switch 🙌🏼
