I don't recommend using a zener diode unless it is a 5.1 or 5.6 volt zener. Using other zener voltages will make the output voltage drift over temperature. Instead, I recommend connecting a 470 ohm resistor between pins 2 and 3, then connecting a 2.5k pot between pin 2 and ground. This modification will give you a 5 to 30 volt variable output that is temperature compensated. Of course, the LM317 is made especially for this purpose. Connect a 240 ohm resistor between pins 2 and 3, and a 5k pot from pin 2 to ground will give you a variable power supply with an output from 1.2 to 26 volts. With both these circuits, the regulator heat dissipation gets quite high when you are running, say a 5 volt output with a 30 volt input, you will need a substantial heatsink and output current will be limited to about 250 mA.

Also you can get lower than 5v by adding 1n4007 in series with the output pin3. With every diode, voltage is reduced by 0.7 v. In some circuits, both series and pin 2 diodes are used to reduce and increase voltage simultaneously to isolate 7805 from reverse voltage damage

Hi👋🤠; I never thought of using the common pin for anything but "Common Negative" Since the 1980s, I just learned something NEW! 🤔🧐😉... Now, if you just add a power Transistor as an "Emmiter Follower" Stage, you can "Sink" Any Amperage you want! 🤔💡😉👍👍👍👍👍

If you use your intuitive zener method, does it also increase the maximum input voltage for the 7805 device? It would for the input/ground section because the zener presents a lower voltage on the ground, but I am curious about the maximum allowed voltage difference between the input and the output terminals.

The internal current sense resistor would still have the same voltage drop across it despite the external components being added, allowing the internal circuitry to function normally. I can go on to quote the product manufacturer specification sheet where it states “In addition to use as fixed voltage regulators, these devices can be used with external components to obtain adjustable output voltages and currents.” But I think that you already knew that and were just testing the master.
