This is why they terminated the contract with Amos. He wanted a comedic show but with a serious confrontation with social subjects. But already in the 70s producers had a preference for clown acting and catchphrases, so they gave more and more room to Walker.

Man I'm 42 and I would never think to get together with a 17-year-old girl. In any decade that is just wrong.

@@andremack6041 Yeah, JJ was funny when he clowned, but they took it too far and John Amos had enough of it (Esther Rolle did, too, and she left for a while, only to return right at the end). I liked laughing at JJ's antics and the shade he and Thelma threw at each other, but it always bugged me that they had him playing Boo Boo the Fool instead of getting real with his artistry and getting an apprenticeship while going to school to ease the burden for his family.

The show lost its energy a lot when they killed off James Evans Sr. Producers bit their noses off despite their faces. Having a strong father presence on a black tv show was great to see. As a kid, I stopped watching after the first few episodes after James’ death because it was no longer the same show. John Amos is an amazing actor

Norman Lear's shows had the opposite effect that he was trying to create. The problem with John Amos is that he had this idea that he would know how to play a black father better than the white writers on the show 🤔.

@@markfloors6988 Actually we sound exactly alike. Just recently I started fighting a heart condition called A-Fib. Getting old sucks. I guess it beats the alternative though.

@@ONTHEEDGEFRED Yes it does suck! but just make sure that you eat right and drink plenty of water, as I looked that up, if you have diabetes or high blood pressure it can be much worse for you

Just like Ron Glass first played a blind salesman/con man, then further into the series he played the principal from Michael's school. And Theodore Wilson, who had a recurring role as Sweet Daddy Williams, first played the role of a nightclub owner earlier in the series.

@@ONTHEEDGEFRED at that time it wasn't a big deal much older men back then married younger women for example Ta- Tanisha (Mary Ann Thomas) she was the girl in the VD episode on Good Time's. She was 18 when she married Lee Weaver he was 41 he made appearances on The Jefferson's and Good Times

@@jacquelinerussell8530 i love jon amos too . hes quite a straight forward person with strong convictions on the show and off....he was voted TVs best dad at one time. many people then loved the show and the discipline both he and his onsreen wife dealt to the children. Not the belting. i dont like that. but they were a strong family. Then next one i love is james avery , Uncle phil of FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR.

My parents felt the SAME WAY when they found out about the man I was dating and married. I was 22 and he was 35.
