She once said in an interview that the original script was for her to be a single mother raising 3 kids in the projects she refused to take the role only if she had a husband then she left because of the stereotypes portrayed on the show she battled so many demons and didn't give in to the ills of Hollywood.

It's a shame that they chose to write John Amos off of the show because of his constant disagreements with the writers. He was right... they were making Jimmie Walker a typical stereotype.
@ProfessorKenneth
Жыл бұрын
it wasn't just about Jimmy, it was about a lot of things. One was James not evolving, seemed like he was always going nowhere in life and John wanted James to have a real steady income like Archie bunker did. John wanted James to a bit more progressive. Then it was Jimmy Walker, then the stories/ scripts..etc....he wanted more pay by that season. It's too bad because he was great on the show. After he left seemed like the show were scraping by with stupid stories. Then when Thelma got married to that annoying football player...lol...it's when I stopped watching it.

Now that's a real tear-jerker. OMG encore!!
One of the saddest moments in television history. I put this up there with the death of Henry on MASH. James was a great character and a fantastic father but sadly John Amos and the producers had major creative differences. Amos wanted a show that put a positive spin on the black family with a strong father but the producers wanted to focus on the comedy and JJ. This was a fantastic show.
