Someone else painfully observed that the song plays in the Bentley for exactly as long as their kiss lasts. Crowley may have been replaying the kiss in his head. 😭 Thank you for these amazing analyses! I look forward to them every week!

I saw another theory randomly on pinterest (unfortunately I can't remember who originally thought it) that Crowley was actually going to take Aziraphale on a date if Metraton didn't show up and get away with his angel. His plan was to: -Take Aziraphale to a date in the Ritz, while the Nightingale song plays in the Bentley (In this case, Crowley intentionally puts the music so it could make the ride romantic the way he wanted); -Give those tulips flowers in the backseat of his car to his loved one (yes, it's there in that last scene when he enter his car and they happen to be yellow, the color that Aziraphale said it was pretty); -After having lunch, he would take Aziraphale back to the bookshop and POSSIBLY gather enough courage to kiss him. It would have been his confession to Aziraphale, not the way it happened in the bookshop, were he had to rush everything and it all went wrong. This was his plan to show Aziraphale his love for him (he may have had this idea from the movies and other romantic human behavior he knew. This could've possibly build his perspective of how you show love to your loved one) I didn't dig in much in this theory, but many things make sense to me in it. It would be nice if you analised it and spotted if there are any gaps.

And I forgot to say that before he would kiss Aziraphale, he would try to say, in his stuttering way and not trying to make eye contact, that he loved him. (Sorry if there are any grammar mistakes in my comments, my English is too bad lol)

Someone on Tumblr thought maybe Aziraphale was listening to it when he was driving back from Edinburgh to calm himself after his encounter (and screwup) with Shax. I feel that by the look at Crowley's face when he turns the radio off (which is quite frustrated) there could be two explanations: 1. He planned it and is upset that his plan got spoiled. 2. Bentley arranged it, knowing how much Crowley would appreciate it and now Crowley is irritated by the fact that Bentley didn't think it through, it should have known better :)

Someone on another feed pointed out that the different verses of the song might correlate with the seasons of the show. In S1, we hear the first verse of the song while they dine at the Ritz. Part of the second verse plays in the Bentley at the end of S2. The theory is that the song will finish in S3. Also, if you look at the lyrics, the tone and themes in each verse reflect the tone and themes in seasons 1 and 2. The first verse is happy. In the second verse, things fall apart, and in the third verse we are given hope for the future. Hopefully season 3 will reflect the hope we all have for them to be together.

Well, that, and the lyrics themselves: That certain night, the night we met There was magic abroad in the air There were angels dining at the Ritz And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square I may be right, I may be wrong But I'm perfectly willing to swear That when you turned and smiled at me A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square The moon that lingered over London town Poor puzzled moon, he wore a frown How could he know we two were so in love? The whole darn world seemed upside down The streets of town were paved with stars It was such a romantic affair And as we kissed and said goodnight A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square When dawn came steaming up all golden blue To interrupt our rendezvous I still remember how you smiled and said Was that a dream? Or was it true? Our homeward step was just as light As the tap dancing feet of Astaire And like an echo far away A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square I know 'cause I was there That night in Berkeley Square

In my opinion the singing nightingale stands for “love is in the air”. Crowley saying “listen - no nightingale..” is just him telling Azira he himself does not feel being loved anymore. The kiss was his last option to show his feelings, the last temptation, deep down knowing already that it does not matter anymore. He showed his love many times just by his actions: being a good companion, a great help always running to rescue, always obedient, a great listener. The angel took it for granted. I think Crowley is feeling betrayed, the song playing in the car is a reminder what has been and what is now lost, their song (in his opinion). He turns the radio out, to show he is trying to cut of their red string. Ok, let us wait for season 3..

If we're going down the overthink everything route, the 6 shots of espresso and Eccles cakes could represent how both sides (heaven and hell) lead to chaos. I found myself wondering how Aziraphale couldn't know that espresso doesn't calm people down, but if it's symbolic, it makes sense. Crowley already knows and has chosen. Aziraphale is naively choosing something he thinks will give him what he wants, but it's the same either way (heaven or hell).

  • @Sendarya

  • @fairywingsonroses

I love this interpretation. It could also represent the ways in which good and evil sometimes get intertwined. The Eccles cakes were seen as evil and were banned. The cakes themselves aren't evil, though (just the events associated with them). Humans have a funny way of mistaking things as being bad when they aren't. At a surface glance, an angel and a demon together is an impossible scenario; one that the very vigilantly religious would call blasphemous. However, once you peel away the layers, you see that there is nothing inherently wrong with it.

Thank you for your research. They were very labor intensive and quite educational. True, if we went a little deeper, we would discover that the nightingale’s song is not only a song of love, but also a symbol of freedom. There is a saying that a nightingale does not sing in a cage or in captivity. That is, the missing singing of the nightingale is the loss of Aziraphale and Crowley not only of love, but also of freedom, they again find themselves in a cage. P. S. I am definitely in the "the Bentley did it!" camp. I hope you *can* do a mini about the Bentley in the future (doubt there's enough for a full sized episode on it) because that car must have some stories to "tell" from the years gone by! And why wouldn't Neil have made the car sentient? He's written so much in the fantasy and sci-fi genres, what's stopping him from giving the car life? The bookshop probably is sentient too, we just haven't seen enough evidence of it yet. Maybe Muriel will run into problems keeping the shop in "tip top" condition because it's depressed that Aziraphale is gone? That would be fun... and then she would have to beg Crowley to come stay at the shop to keep it happy again, bringing him back into the story and give her the opportunity to learn how to "human" from the master imitator himself. 😂 (That idea is a freebie for anyone who wants to write that story, just please let me know what you come up with because I would LOVE to read it!!)

I thought I was in for a crazy theory, but after watching the Tumblr edit, I am convinced it is on purpose. It can't be otherwise, because of the perfect rhythm between the images and the music. It is absolutely obvious with Aziraphale's smile, and the Maggie and Nina part, but it is there all the time. Maybe someone has said it before but I think it could also god's message to Crowley. We might discover she has been a little like Snape, the metatron might even be in it too. It might all be her plan from the beggining, and this could be a way of her to say: I'm sorry to cause you so much pain, but it will end well, "have faith in me" (pun intended)

I really like the idea of it being the bently playing the song! it would make sense if it was god herself, since she is the only one that knows, although the bently knowing is also likely. But regradless of whom it was, or what, I feel lie that the fact that that is the line Crowley ears is meaningful. When Aziraphale is talking to Metatron near the end, and Crowley is tidying up the bookshop, I noticed the background music playing for that scene was the lullaby he sang to the wrong boy when he was posing as a nanny. I haven't heard others talk about that, either. I mentioned it on facebook, but no one replied. Maybe it doesn't mean anything, but nothing seems frivolous in this story lol. Anyway, Crowley is turning the bookshelves back around and I hear the tune for "go to sleep and dream of pain." Not sure if that's foreshadowing or if it's just because he's tidying 🤷. But it felt ominous when I first noticed it and I thought, oh no what kind of bad omen is this? Also, I thought it was cute yet weird that Aziraphale silently asked Crowley for permission to go talk with Metatron when Metatron requested his presence. Like, that's Metatron, and Aziraphale gets Crowley's nod to go talk to him. That really struck me since Metatron is supposedly Azirahpale's higher up and Crowley is... not technically involved in Heaven's angel hierarchy anymore. So, it must be because... ?? My brain: Hellooo!! HUSBAND! 😅

  • @Rhi_k

    @Rhi_k

Yes I noticed it too! I thought it might be representative of evil trying to exert it's influence. In season one it was played when Crowley was actively influencing Warlock to evil, in this season I suspect that it is the Metatron trying to influence Aziraphale toward his own dark agenda. The Metatron is the only angelic being we ever see wearing black and he is clearly singularly focused on the great plan without empathy or sentiment, I'd actually go a step further and suggest he either has more sinister motives or is representative of how extremism in any form is inherently harmful.

I noticed that too. It's one of the biggest Couple Moments in the season - the other being Crowley sitting on the arm of Aziraphale's chair because have you ever seen anyone do that when they weren't a couple? Love that! Big husband moment. I wonder if the lullaby - which I'm told is taken out of the opening credits song - represents Crowley taking care of Jim the way he took care of Warlock.

Amazing video as always, thanks for keeping up with GO content, my little sad gay heart needs it. 💖 (Also, I 100% believe it's Crowley who's responsible for the song in the Bentley, he doesn't look a bit surprised that the song is playing, he just silently listens to it for a bit before turning it off and driving away, as if it's really coming down to him how things took a whole different turn and he wasn't expecting it, he really thought they'd be going for a nice little romantic breakfast at the Ritz but well...)

So everyone talking about the Bently I have to point out. When Crowley loses the car in Season 1, he said he'd had the car for 90 years. And when Aziraphale says he learned to drive, it was 90 years ago (before they even gave driving tests, but he insisted). So let's just point out that when Crowley got his (arguably first) car, Aziraphale took it upon himself to learn to drive one just in case. And for that matter, never mentioned it till now that he could have helped drive the car all along.

I can't hear it, but I don't have the ear for this sort of thing. It would make sense if the credits song was a peeled back Nightingale Sang, using the original music to create something new [time to go rewatch all of Sideways' videos again], and it fits my interpretation that the song is playing because of Crowley. Not because he planned it- you think this _sputtering mess_ could think passed his confession when he was borderline _crying_ over it? Demon didn't plan _anything._ After attempting to open up about his feelings for the first time in his existence, Aziraphale choosing Heaven guts him, and he closes himself off to protect himself- No Nightingales- but he's a demon, he lies, it's what he does. When he gets into the Bentley, the true feelings manifest audibly- a nightingale sang, _he_ sang in the bookshop, but no one heard him, not even Aziraphale [from his pov]. So, unable to face the pain, Crowley shuts off the music, there are no nightingales, _he's_ not the nightingale, but despite his best efforts to shove his love back down, it still _leaks out of him._ Crowley is so ill-equipped to handle his love that, by his own power as a celestial being, it manifests in reality- the rose at the bistro table, the tulip in the back of his car. Perhaps when he can love freely and openly he might?? grow?? a garden?? Where nightingales could come and sing and be heard??? 8Oc [Yeah! More costumes analysis! Looking forward to more of that!]

I am not sure what Queen was intending but it always felt like heaven and Hell discussing what to do with guy because of his upbringing. The complicated morality of "how do you hold a criminal accountable?" as well. It reminds me a lot of when Crowley and Azirafell are discussing poverty during the grave robbing episode. For me this theory, this song, changes everything. As you watch it you can see exactly what the ending was meant to look like to us. What the music the show runners are playing is. You can actually SEE the tears start to well in aziraphales eyes as he tries desperately to pull himself together. You can see what was meant to be. What god intended. This ending isn’t broken, it’s not wrong. It’s a solder going off to war. Aziraphale has done it before. Where he has said something he knew would hurt Crowley. “I don’t even like you!” it’s something he does quite often… he KNOWS Crowley hates “forgiveness” his words hurt… he knows they did. But he had to. He’s earth’s protector. God created him to be good and just and it’s finally time for him to go to war. It’s finally time for him to accomplish what she made him for. You have done your part. Now aziraphale must do his… and i think aziraphale knows it…. I think he finally sees the cards are blank… and they have been since the fall. Everything was set in place. Everything was created as it was meant to be. And as Crowley discovered long ago “the angels thought it up themselves”

@@Allegro11Maestoso I’m not sure if he said that exactly but I do know he started trying to figure out his reason for being, if his galaxy was worthless then he was never MEANT to be an angel. And so he questioned god like the other demons but in the plan he was a demon, and they placed him on earth, another worthless job, meaning his purpose in the grand plan… had to be over, if after Adam and Eve ate the fruit. He being balanced by aziraphale then it must mean that this “ineffable plan” was just as bogus as his job on earth, he was always doing God’s bidding before without knowing so why was he just able to simply LIVE? Just as he mentions both the demons and the angels want this war, neither side has stopped to consider that the ineffable plan… Is done. So the only logical conclusion is that god doesn’t want the war, the demons and the angels do. Hence taking “the humans thought it up themselves” and replacing it with angels. Because Crowley KNOWS that the ineffable plan is bogus. Because HE was only ever meant to experience, Nothing else… his job is done. And that WAS the plan. Everything afterwards has been dumb luck at her card table

I think knowing why Crowley brought the song up in the first place is important too. I haven't heard anyone really talk about this, but the manner of which he points up to the sky and says that there's "no nightingales" is _remarkably_ similar to the conversation he had with Aziraphale 15 years prior, when he was pointing out all the things Aziraphale loves about Earth that Heaven is incapable of offering him. I hardcore believe this moment was a direct callback, and that Crowley wasn't saying anything like "Our love is over", but "The life we built is precious to me, and Heaven won't ever accept it."

She was the only one, that we know of right now, other than Aziraphale and Crowley, who know how significant that song is. And I'm sure the 1941 minisodes are not the end of that particular time in their lives. Perhaps they even were the inspiration to the original song itself? The magic shop also appears in both 1941 and present time. Aziraphale even kind of cringes when he first goes in to add another participant to the ball. Something other than Nazi zombies happened maybe? Lots to ponder and lots more rewatching of this analysis....

Your analysis - that C and A shared the same understanding of the nightingale song’s significance to them as a “group” of two - confirms the S2 hints about their relationship even before the kiss: Shax’s comment to Azi in the car that she heard a rumor 80 or so years prior to the present day that they were an item and that Azi wasn’t C’s type and that it was a surprise C would risk discorporation for Azi (excuse me but WTH does the reference to “poor Furfur, he thought you were his ticket to the big time” mean?!), and the way Azi arches that eyebrow. Azi’s bold reference to “We both get plenty of use out of the bookshop!” Oh really?! The way the argument shuts down when Crowley says “No nightingales” because Azi understands the context. 😢 Well now that the strike is over, maybe there will be a S3 green light announcement soon. I thought Crowley said this because it was their song because it plays at the Ritz at the end of season 1 AND they were aware of the nightingale in Berkeley Square; it was a miracle neither of them created so they thought it was either "ineffable fallout of recent events on the nature of reality " and a literal "Good Omen" for their relationship OR perhaps a miracle cast by a "higher authority" as a good omen/ blessing. I think you're right though that if God said no one else heard it, we should take Her word for it. I agree we need another 1941 flashback in season 3 because You Can't Tell Me Aziraphale did the Apology Dance in 1941 and Not Tell Me WHY?!! AND ARE YOU TELLING ME WE"RE GOING TO SEE SOME KIND OF OTHER INDICATOR OF THE MEANING of NIGHTINGALES IN 1941? Now it's going to drive me crazy not knowing exactly why Crowley said that and what it means. Also, I see other people have mentioned in the comments that the song plays in the car for the same length of time as the kiss - I heard this and informally timed (by counting to 15) and it checks out. Is that a better CLUE to who played it in the Bentley? I don't know. I agree the only interpretation to be made to "Their Song" timing out perfectly to the ending sequence - AND the lyric that plays in the car is an encouraging one. The Nightingale still singing, but no one heard it. What everyone is talking about on Facebook right now is someone found a nightingale on the top of the box with the practical joke in the magic shop (The Snakes in a tube thing, but it's really a box) and the guy in the magic shop trying to dissuade Azriaphale away from the dangerous Bullet Catch. He doesn't choose the nightingale box though- he chooses the weapon. He shuns safety for his "showstopper" and Crowley goes along with it and chooses to trust him. 1941 and the intimacy of the Bullet Catch - I have Things To Say. What do you think is the meaning of the music playing in the background of the Record Shop. Isn't it You don't Own Me by Leslie Gore? I'm going off memory now. That song plays during the end credits of the first episode of Handmaids Tale and seems to fit Nina better than Maggie because it's about an abusive relationship. I also think Eccles Cakes was a weird choice when Nina could have just offered Aziraphale Chamomile. I think it Neil must have just put it in as a joke - or an allusion to the fact that Aziraphale is more hedonistic than Crowley when it comes to food and drink. I can't wait for your next video and I miss the mini Monday topics. They really help me to get through my week. I have to figure out discord.

i personally think that nina recommending eccles cakes is just beacuse nina's character and crowley's are terribly similar. she was probably just being sarcastic. just like maggie and azirahpale are literally the same person only different genders if you will. nina and maggie also represent the same color scheme that aziraphale and crowley represent. dark and bright. nina is pessimistic at worst, recluctantly hopeful at best just like crowley who's pretty much come to terms with the fact - throughout the past six thousand years - that he will never have aziraphale to himself. if it wasn't for actual humans to sit down with him and educate him about it, as well as his pessimism to have subsided for a bit of hope (what if it worked for real? what if we could run off together after all?) he would have never done it. he grew "content" just sitting with aziraphale and getting drunk. even if he probably craved more all this time. just like nina craved change (a breakup?) but had simply been too tied to the every day cycle that was being emotionally abused by her partner. crowley didn't have a partner but he is inevitably tied to hell thanks to god who he loved at some point. so yeah, i think that nina is just a crowley-representation. but a human one.

  • @annen3706
    @annen37068 ай бұрын

This is a great analysis, Sendarya (as yours always are!), but I think there's something you missed. I don't think the nightingale had anything to do with why this became their song. If you look at the lyrics of the first verse: That certain night, the night we met There was magic abroad in the air THERE WERE ANGELS DINING AT THE RITZ And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square. You said this song first came out in 1941, so they probably heard it quite often during the time they spent together, and I'm sure that the third line probably tickled their fancy. Remember, they both started out as angels, and their relationship became closer over the eons over shared meals. Also, if you watch the 1967 flashback, after the first time Crowley offers to give Aziraphale a ride wherever, Aziraphale says maybe they could go for a picnic or "dine at the Ritz." So they obviously knew of the song by that time period. Their luncheon at the Ritz at the end of s1 was certainly not the first time they heard the song. So I think that the "angels dining at the Ritz" lyric is *why* it became their song, and the nightingale was a sort of shorthand that they could use with each other. Changing gears slightly, I'd love to know your thoughts on what might have happened to them in 1650. In s2e1, when Aziraphale demands that Crowley does the "little dance", he says that *he* did the dance in 1650, 1793, and 1941. We know from s1 that 1793 is when Crowley rescued Aziraphale from the Bastille, and the 1941 storyline is in both seasons. But we haven't yet seen any flashbacks to 1650. But it must be significant, or why would it have been in the script? I would also love to know whether the I Was Wrong dance was choreographed beforehand or if David Tennant made it up on the spot. 😂😂😂

In the repeat of the 1941 episode and the way it is continued in the show with the Nazis returning to the earth as zombies I see a rather political hint: be careful, such ideologies of hatred that we all believed dead can arise again, maybe in a slightly different shape but still dangerous. When first the zombies in GO walk the earth they attack a poor and helpless person, then the man in Goldstone's magical shop. But in the end of that Minisode they are set loose on earth for eternity so everyone can fall prey to them. In the show the persons most imminently in danger are the American soldiers who are still in the theater watching the show - the same ones who had risked their lives to save Europe from the Nazis... The zombies in GO were sent back to earth by Hell in order to stop the cooperation between Aziraphale and Crowley. They failed because of the strong relationship and the growing trust between those two which made them so powerful together that they managed to survive the bullet catch act without any practice and despite the miracle blocker in the room. This seems to me like a strong statement: it is absolutely vital that groups which might be considered as opposite sides (as could be: East and West, Left and Right, Black and White...) should better start trusting each other and start cooperating. This is the only way to 'stop the bullets'. A relationship based on trust and compassion has the power to even avert the apparently inevitable destruction of the world in the end!

Re 1941: Shax also says, in the car with Aziraphale in s2e4, “Sometime in the last 80, 90 years, I remember hearing that you and Crowley were an item,” and then the whole rest of the episode is in 1941. Also the romantic music when Crowley saves the books, pretty clear canon signs to 1941 being a beginning of something or some awareness. Thank you for the amazing analysis and research as always 💖

Now maybe someone brought this up before and i've overlooked it, but if you've ever listened to nightingales in earnest - if they sing, they really mean it. i remember e.g. one stargazing night when one nightingale just kept going through the night which is not a small feat for such a tiny bird (consider the fast metabolism of small birds).

I wasn't familiar enough to have the deeper understanding you provided. I love the idea of the Bently playing the song, but I also like the idea of it being God. I did not know this much about nightingales! Good on you for all the research. My only point of reference was the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale "The Nightingale", in which the emperor of China has a wild nightingale brought to his palace so he can hear it all the time. The bird gets depressed because it wants to be free and at the same time the emperor of Japan sends the Chinese emperor a mechanical nightingale, like a music box. The real nightingale flies away and eventually the emperor tires of the music box and misses the bird. He starts to die, the nightingale comes back, and he is restored to health. The bird ends up coming back to visit occasionally as long as the emperor doesn't tell anyone. The main theme seems to be what is real vs what is artificial but also not forcing someone to be someone they're not.

I really like this deep-dive into the significance of the song. I've always taken Crowley's "No nightingales" as a break-up, and I think that's what Aziraphale took away from it too. Imo it brings a certain context to Aziraphale's reaction to the kiss. Crowley completely contradicts himself in that moment, breaking up with Aziraphale in one breath and then kissing him in the next. Aziraphale is, understandably, very confused and overwhelmed by that. I'm personally in the Bentley camp as far as who I think caused the song to start playing in Crowley's car. That just seems to make the most sense to me. It doesn't seem like Crowley himself can make anything play in the car except for Queen. But the Bentley is still, I think, an extension of Crowley, and we see in the episode where Aziraphale drives it that the Bentley favors and wants to please him. There's even a scene where the Bentley hilariously tries to follow Aziraphale after he parks it. I'm not sure if we're meant to interpret the Bentley as having "feelings" per se, but it does seem to have some kind of sentience and I like to think that by playing the song, the Bentley is in some capacity expressing sadness, or perhaps even Crowley's heartbreak through itself, at Aziraphale's departure.

Neil Gaiman does say the reason this is their song is the lyrics, but I admit I just assumed it's because "Angels were dining at The Ritz". Hadn't thought of the rest of the song in such details. BTW wakes are still a thing, but not three days..

hi ! i know you share a lot of brainrot and i want to ask if you were ever interested in crowley before his fall. yes, we only see one scene of crowley, and limited (but structured) dialogue and interactions with aziraphale, but i do have a bit of a ✨clue✨ while jim was discovering gravity, crowley went into depth on how it was structured, then followed with jims question of why, he replied “I dunno really, it seemed like a good idea when /we/ were /all/ talking about it” (not accurate quote). if crowley was there when they made physics and gravity, he didn’t immediately go and question God, he didn’t fall until they were half way done the creation of earth-which means he collected more questions-he was probably questioning everything presented in front of him after the pillars of creation with aziraphale. in the before the beginning scene, crowley barely knew of the plans for earth before aziraphale told him, so he wasn’t quite on the job yet. and of course after the fall, he was put at the tree due to the fact that he was probably one of the only demons that knew earth so well and would be able to navigate it so well. let me know what you think! ive been dying to elaborate this little theory. -goat

exactly ! im just trying to construct a timeline on where crowley fell and how heaven handled it-for example, crowley is a bit of an unreliable source-i cant remember if neil was the one to say it or not, but the point is, crowley is not as innocent as he presents himself to be, and heaven is making him entirely too guilty for what he has done. he was probably only asking questions, thought it could be the harsh tone that the crowley we know uses especially when he is frustrated/angry-even in the scene we see angel crowley get flustered at how his star systems aren’t just there to twinkle. heaven of course reacts the worst, because theyve never seen angel react in such a blasphemous manner, and crowley was damned for the rest of his existence. i do want to say sardarya, that i really do enjoy your videos and very excited to see what is to come !

This probably doesn't add anything to your theory, but I've seen a still of part of the 'before the beginning' scene and there is very clearly a large snake eye on Crowleys side, as if it's looking at him. It isn't there for the whole scene, but it does feed into the idea that he is already being watched OR if we're going with "she (God) planned it this way from the beginning) that his fate decided/he was created gir hhis purpose and it's only a matter of time

this is a part of the generalization of the theory too ! i did look into the idea of crowley being a pawn in God’s plan, and i actually went back to the ‘before the beginning’ scene to see what you were referring to. i am not the best at spotting such details, but taking your word for it, i will say that i do believe crowley is being watched by Her (being God). in this type of faith revolving around God, people believe God test them. whether it be everyday challenges or life changing experiences. are we allowed to assume that God is just testing crowley ? i think your little ✨clue✨ does in fact allow us to do so

The hidden song blowed my mind ! It's very coherent that's the nightingale song have a meaning about two lovers separated by the war when we know (we know isn't it?) that the S3 will talk about war. For me, after thinking about it and saw theories, the song comes from the Bentley. I can't imagine Aziraphale doing that, he's overwhelmed and even if Crowley is an oldfashion lover boy in his way, I don't think that's a thing he could do. The 4th option seems to 'interventionist' for me. I know the S3 will be...intense, but I hope at least one romantic scene in 1941. It would be so cool.

If you compare the image of Crowley sitting at the table (Smite? Smote?) at the French restaurant (Crowley and the Rose) to the cover of Oscar Wilde's The Nightingale and the Rose, you see Crowley is the nightingale, the one who loves selflessly rather than for gain (I would love you to help me, be my 2nd in command, work with me, I need you). That's why Crowley puts on his glasses and stares sideways.while Azi elaborates on his offer. Crowley understands (better than Azi does) that there are no nightingales, no one loving unconditionally with pure true love, in Azi's offer to go to heaven with him, in contrast to Crowley's offer to just be an us. That's why Azi gives him that long dark look. Azi's busted, and he knows it. They are on two different pages. I think the Bentley recognizes Crowley's page, and the song is how it tells him. That was a moment of communion between the Bentley and Crowley. In the story, the nightingale is unappreciated and unrecognized, even though she has sacrificed herself for love. I think we will see this purity of love on steroids in s3, when Crowley sacrifices himself for humanity and life on earth.

I wonder if S3 would ever confirm who made the song play. I like the idea that it's the Bentley, but I'd have to see at least one other instance of the Bentley choosing to play a song (that hadn't turned into a Queen song) purosefully to instruct Crowley, for example, before reflecting on the final 15 and understanding that as true. Many things dont' just happen once, and many things are meaningful. If s3 offers no indication of anyone having prepared that song, I'm going to unfortunately have to go with Crowley. Perhaps the least interesting in all of this. He had wanted a little us time, a breakfast at the Ritz, I think he'd wanted to swoop his angel out of there, have the car start, have that play and see Aziraphale's expression. I sense that it's maybe the least special option, because a message from Aziraphale or from god herself are also very, very interesting. But if Crowley is the one who prepared it, it's just that much more heartbreaking. We need these two sweeties to make up already!

Did someone else notice that when the Metatron tells Aziraphale about the Second Coming, apart from the music, there is a sound overlay with the sound of Aziraphales miracles. So far in S1 and S2 every time that Aziraphale makes a miracle we hear that the same sound. For me, this means that HE made the Bentley play the song. I commented under the other nightingale video by Sendarya - have you noticed that Aziraphale learned French with Monsieur Rossignol. Rossignol means nightingale in French. Also, French is the language of love and Aziraphale doesn't speak it very well 😢

A theory for my sad, broken little heart: They have kissed before. In 1941. That's part of why this song means so much to them. Watching your other videos and analyses of everything, how Aziraphale will often reach out and put his hand on Crowley, and how they confirmed held hands on the bus at the end of season 1, it follows that the comfort with physical touch between them has grown over the years. The first significant instance, at least that I can remember, is in Edinburgh when Crowley gently turns Aziraphale around to show him that Wee Morag has already passed. Later that night when he's drunk on laudanum, he smacks Azi on the back or possibly even his ass when he's telling him to "GO ON" about how poverty is ineffably wonderful and that Elspeth shouldn't take her own life. And then after the dramatics, Azi steadies Crowley with a hand around his waist as they're walking through the graveyard. The touch barrier was broken for them. I absolutely agree that 1941 was a pivotal meeting for them. I do believe that saving the books was indeed when Azi truly fell in love with Crowley, or at least finally realized it. That look after Crowley hands him the books and walks away offering a lift home says it all. And Azi wants to do something for Crowley in return. Which he does by filling in for the arrested magician and keeping Crowley on good terms with the woman at the West End theatre. When they make the agreement to do the bullet catch together, Azi is elated to shake Crowley's hand, once again breaking that touch barrier. After Aziraphale helps Crowley a second time by stealing the photo of the two of them to keep Crowley from getting into trouble, they then have their romantic toast. As you pointed out in another video, we know their night didn't end there because at some point in 1941 Azi did the "I Was Wrong Dance" (I hope we get to see the context of that 😉). I like to think that they continued a night of quiet and cautious romance which at some point included hearing that song, and as they parted Aziraphale kissed Crowley good night. Just my little fan theory to try to hold me over until season 3 💔

It did cheer me up the detail of the eccle cakes. You are the best 💜✨️ Also, maybe you don't know this, but Neil's wife, Amanda Palmer, who is also a singer (she has a dark cabaret/gothic band named The Dresden Dolls, that is one of my favorites ever, and she is also a solist) has a version of that song too. Maybe it is a little hint or reference into Neil's romantic life too. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe the meaning of this song is more personal to Neil and beyond the characters, or reflected on them.
