Good Omens 2 x ABBA | On And On And On

Okay let's add a description to this (3 weeks later lol but hey what can ya do)
About 6 weeks of work went into this, or at least I finished it about 6 weeks after the season came out. It's one of my favourite videos I've edited so far, tied with my previous Good Omens edit set to The Worrying Kind. I'm still feeling a bit iffy on the colour grade in a few places, but overall I'm very happy with the result!
I had the song in mind for the season for months before it was released cause even the basic premise we were given then fit the lyrics so incredibly well, and while making this I realised just how even more ridiculously well-suited it really was. I've never had an edit just fall into place almost of its own accord quite like this one, especially the verses, although repetitive choruses are always a struggle to think of new clips for to keep both the video and song lyrics coherent, while avoiding making it too same-same-y (hence the first chorus being halved lol).
Thank you all for the amazing response to this vid, you're all stars. Keep on rocking everyone, till the night is gone! (aka until we get s3, which as of today 17-09-23 I believe is once again going under the pen, so a big cheer for that! Edit: and it seems as of 9-11-23 that the actors could now be available as well! Amazon: time to renew Good Omens!)

  • @maddiemakes13

    @maddiemakes13

    Ай бұрын

    lmao 😂 thanks for the compliment! The answer is I don't really storyboard anything, although sometimes I wish I could cause then making these might not take so long... 😅 The tl;dr stages of making these videos are: 1) OMG this song is PERFECT for X show!! 2) put song on editing timeline and add lyrics 3) inscrutable whirlpool of mingled euphoria and exasperation lasting at least 5-6 weeks (unless it peters out along the way) 4) finished video The slightly longer, more explanatory explanation is: For shows I watch a lot, certain moments and little movements just tend to stick in my mind, as if they were dance moves I'd practiced. Editing actually feels like a kind of dancing-more physical than intellectual. It's all about finding a flow of movement within and between clips, and using the structure of the music as a tightrope to propel and reign it in. When it sits just right, watching it back becomes a physical sensation. There is a fair amount of inane gesticulating involved in making these 😂 There are also some editing best practices that it helps to keep in mind: building momentum by cutting on the beat, cutting on action as well as maintaining continuity of motion between clips to tie them together, as well as having a clear and consistent point of focus within the frame, so that the eye doesn't have to waste time scanning the image for where to look every time there's a cut. It's usually said that the best editor is the one that isn't noticed, and to not be noticed, you need to avoid making the audience work. Reduce resistance, basically. Patterns between movements and rhythm tend to reveal themselves just by dropping clips onto a timeline with music already on it. There's always something to time, even if you don't know what it is when you first pick the clip. Then it's just a question of lining up the beginnings and ends of clips with each other and the beat, and nudging their contents back and forth a frame or two at a time until the timing and flow sit just right. It helps to have a feel for narrative structure as well, to give the clips a purpose beyond just rhythm. A kind of breath in, breath out continuous buildup and release of emotional tension. Honestly, what takes me the longest and causes the most frustration is thinking of clips to use. I work mostly from intuition, so usually it's just one thing reminding me of another, and then that makes me think of something else, until I've filled the entire runtime of the song with clips. Movements, lyrics, plot points and themes can all spark associations. Parallells and stuff only occur to me in the moment while editing, they usually aren't planned out on paper beforehand. That's where knowing and trusting your own tastes helps. Taste is how you know when you've got it right. I am very aware of when and how I like something, which also helps me to identify why something isn't working, or to move on when it's done. Solid taste also helps keep things consistent. That isn't to say there is such a thing as good or bad taste, but there needs to be such a thing as your taste. For me, a lot of it's about picking the right song, since that is the source of my inspiration. Usually there is some kind of common thematic arc between the song and show in question that piqued my interest, and then playing with that idea drives and guides the entire editing process. Basically it's a little bit of theoretical knowledge guiding a lot of intuition, and simply learning how to follow the vibes. Idk how helpful that is, but I think that is as well as I can put it, since there isn't a lot of method to my madness ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (and thanks for giving me the opportunity to rant for a bit, it's fun to just go on about something you love every once in a while.)

    How do you upload these without getting copyright sniped?

  • @maddiemakes13

    @maddiemakes13

    Ай бұрын

    If you expand the description and scroll down, you'll see an official looking "song widget" with the album cover, song title, artist etc. That means that youtube's Content ID system has detected which copyrighted material is used in the video. KZread checks this automatically while you upload a video. Copyright holders can choose what policy they want youtube to apply when their song/video/etc is detected in another's video: 1) they can ignore it and simply track the video's performance, 2) they can have youtube remove the video, or 3) they can choose to leave the video up, but put ads on it and claim some/all of its ad revenue. Note that the same content may have different policies applied to it in different regions - a song that can be used in Italy may be blocked in the US, etc. In the case of the first and third option, you are free to use their song for your edits - although the owner might put their own video suggestions on your video, like UMG (Universal Music Group) has done on this video (you can see it by clicking the little (i) tag at the top right hand corner of the video on desktop, or just scroll to the bottom of the description). To know whether I can use a song for my edits, I usually do a quick youtube search for it and look at the results I get. If some other random user (ie not an official account) has uploaded a video that uses the song (eg a lyric vid), without it getting blocked or taken down, and if the song widget is in their description, then it means that I can use the song for my edit too. If there aren't any videos that use the song, it might mean the copyright holder has chosen to take them down, or maybe the song is just not that popular. You could throw together a really quick video (just the song + black screen) and try to upload it (without publishing it) to check if the Content ID check catches it. If so, then it will tell you what policy the copyright holder has chosen to apply. I'm pretty sure you won't get a copyright strike simply for failing this initial check, since the video was never made public, but it's worth double checking that. I feel like there should be some search function somewhere for checking this with less work, but I haven't found one yet. Admittedly, I've never used an obscure song, so I never bothered to look too hard for it either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don't use a lot of dialogue in my videos, so I'm not sure where the line tends to be drawn with what length of other audio clips you can use. The video clips themselves have never been a problem for me either, but again maybe there are limitations to how long unedited clips can be? Hope that helps :)

    I'm working on a tumblr text post which will give more nuance, but the short answer for how you can find clips is: googling "good omens scene pack" / screen recording clips / piracy
