When the foreign Ministers of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso announced on December 1st, 2023, that the three countries had plans to establish a confederation, Africans were filled with joy because this is something every true pan-African wishes for and it's a step to achieving African unity. At the time, the Foreign Ministers announced that top diplomats from each of the three countries had met in Bamako for two days where they had discussions on ironing out the workings of the new alliance between the three countries. They also emphasized the importance of diplomacy, defense, and development to consolidate political and economic integration. The Foreign Minister of Mali, Abdoulaye Diop, then noted that recommendations will be submitted to each head of state, who are due to meet in Bamako at an unspecified date. So, everyone has been patiently waiting to see how the new confederation would operate.
Well, guess what? Recent news revealed that Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have finalized the plans to form the confederation. This was confirmed at a meeting of foreign ministers of each of these countries in Niger’s capital Niamey on Friday, May 17. In a statement issued to confirm the stance of the countries, Niger’s Foreign Minister, Bakary Yaou Sangare, said, “The objective was to finalize the draft text relating to the institutionalization and operationalization of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).” Sangare noted that the text would be adopted by the heads of state of the three countries at a summit, without specifying the date. So, this means that all that remains for the Confederacy to start operating is for the military juntas of each of these countries to announce it and make it official at a summit, which would be held very soon. This is magnificent news. In his submission, the Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop added, “We can consider very clearly, today, that the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has been born.” Indeed a new era has been born.

Other African countries should consider joining the alliance of Sahel states. The three countries have laid the ground work for a united Africa and I see no reason why they should not consider accommodating fellow African states. Why create separate factions of alliances when there is a working model?
