They also do a good job setting up the stage for the competition and manage to draw in a crowd and get TV coverage. All of these are things you can't say about powerlifting, where it's still just a bunch of amateur federations each defending that their rules and records are the "right" ones, where you have this kind of shitty judging, grossly negligent organization for example when it comes to equipment and spotters, the prize is a plastic trophy and a picture on the wall of the local gym and the only people watching are the lifters' friends and family.

I was a competitive powerlifter for over 20 years. I was never an elite lifter and was totally natural (other tha protein powder and creatine) so I was out the because I enjoyed the sport and wanted to try to push my PR's to a new limit each meet. I was never a threat to set any major records, but I was amazed and frustrated by the lack of standardization of judging between federations. I was also surprised at the lack of standardization between different judges themselves within each federation. After the 2000 season I started competing solely in Ironman (bench and deadlift) because I never knew the true definition of squat depth. Even in Ironman I still found that was still a big discrepancy between judging between federations...especially in the deadlift. I've been in competitions where none of the judges were certified, even at the state level, but were allowed to judge simply because the federation couldn't find anyone to judge the competitions. I've even seen lifters who were competing again other lifters within their class used as judges to judge the lifter they were competing against. That's why the sport has such a hard time getting national recognition and credibility. The Julius Maddox debacle on ESPN certainly didn't help this situation either.

I’m all into weight lifting so I don’t know the rules of powerlifting but does powerlifting have juries who can over turn the referee’s decisions ? Also can you contest the judge / jury’s decision by looking at the replay ? Think this is the only fair way. Of course in weightlifting as well it’s still a gray decision at times even with these systems because after all they’re all humans and I feel they’re biased at times.

Thors second lift was high, while his 1st and 3rd were to depth, was he competing in opposite day?

Issue is that; these guy's hips and thighs are so huge, it makes judging from any direction hard.

It was an awful call on Thor’s squat. If he had been given it he would have had the second highest total of all time at that point in history and would still have the fourth highest of all time now. He was definitely trying to win everything strength related in 2018. After dominating strongman that year I’m sure he had the heaviest PL total of all time planned for that meet. Grip issues let him down though and he couldn’t get the deadlift that would have given him that accolade (without the dodgy squat call that is). Shame.

Also Aleksey Nikulin should be mentioned here. He got robbed multiple times in multiple meets by judges who red lighted his ATWR squat. His 1st attempt kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKeKwbWmhrqdabw.html&feature=emb_logo and 2nd attempt here kzread.info/dash/bejne/jI1m2bSQaNbadKg.html, both looked good IMHO. Incomparably better than Dallas Norris and Tom Kallas quarter squat WRs.

In IPF worlds depth is stricter - the red lighted squats from Williams in this video look also bit too high for me.

The last lift on the video was okay. You have to break the horizontal plane at the knee, not deep down. The last lifts by these guys were okay, but Hafthor’s first squat and the small guy’s first deadlift were not locked out. I used to be a referee.
