【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

Hana played Kotaro on opening the door. She likes having a guy opening doors for her! But independent Hana came through when left alone. They both loved their humans enough to open the door for them.

I had to laugh so hard at that door opening routine 😂 Especially when Kotaro just turned his back to the door (5:04) and Hana opened the door herself, whereas before it looked like she couldn't do that at all 😆 I remember an older video where Kotaro was having trouble opening the door and Hana watched him do it and then came to the rescue by opening the door in one swift motion 💪😁 The dynamic duo is back in action 🤣🤣🤣

Yes, Hana has proven that she is a strong and ndependent girl many a time! 😂 In most cases, it is actually Kotaro struggling with typical activities - eating fish/chicken but not only, opening doors, securing his food/water or personal space from other otters (Hana, Aty...) 😅. But Hana loves to be pampered, so I think in this case, she just wanted to be cared for, so she waited patiently for Kotaro's cute gesture (which he totally ignored! he was too preoccupied with his important smell-sniffing research). 😂 I could watch their curious interactions all day long! ❤

Hana is smart, she knows how to get to the goal, better underestimated than overestimated 😁 The fact that Kotaro struggles with trivial things is just further proof of how intelligent the professor is, because he is mentally underwhelmed with these simple things 😅

@@Stefanie28198 Yes, exactly! 😊 Kotaro is a smart but awkward introvert who has difficulty reading social situations and emotions (especially with other otters), sometimes he is so confused and has no clue what they want from him. 😅 Hana is a bit shy when outside and suspicious with new creatures but she has a good survival instinct and knows how to get (and keep) what she wants. 🤣 She is fierce when it comes to defending Kotaro! 😁 They both have quirky and precious personalities. ❤ I can watch them and talk about them all day long. My friends must think I'm crazy. 😂
These babies are not only cute and adorable but considerate too. We love them so much ❤❤❤❤

So adorable. Kotaro has a teasing habit to annoy Hana by making her wait after few times. Kotaro’s face is so precious when he is left alone. I enjoyed his digging❤️👍🤣

I've noticed that Kotoro gets that older sibling/big brother annoyance with Hana. Like him pretending not to see her at the door, and in another recent video in the pool, he looks back at her to make sure she was gone and not hanging around to pester him. These two are so incredible and so funny, every video has so many precious moments in it! 🦦❤️🇨🇦
