The Good Friday service is different from the vast majority of services that are held throughout the year. It is utterly stripped down and spare. There are no candles on the altar. All the altar linens have been removed. There is no music and we do not celebrate the Eucharist. We are remembering the death of Jesus upon the Cross and so all the beauty and majesty of a normal service is replaced with solemnity, starkness, and sorrow.
