Gonzaga Bulldogs guard Hunter Sallis enters NCAA transfer portal | What it means for Zags in 2023-24

Gonzaga Bulldogs guard Hunter Sallis joins Dominick Harris in entering the NCAA transfer portal, a concerning trend for Mark Few's program in Spokane. Is this the start of a mass exodus for the Zags? And is this the new normal, with the Bulldogs bringing in so many high profile (4 and 5 star) talents, and not always having room for all of them to play big minutes?
Also, what does Sallis' departure mean for Gonzaga next season? Nolan Hickman and Dusty Stromer are now the top two guards returning, depending on whether Malachi Smith chooses to use his final year of eligibility. The Zags might have as many as five scholarships to fill this spring, so the transfer portal updates could be coming regularly for a while.
Finally, we close out the show discussing potential landing spots for Sallis, including his hometown programs of Nebraska and Creighton, his friendship with Wisconsin's Chucky Hepburn, and whether he will pursue an opportunity to play point guard or shooting guard at his next stop.

This is one of the 1st times I can remember being unhappy with mark few and how he handled his players. Letting hunter get away because of lack of playing time is unforgivable

It may have been Few had to pick Hickman or Strawther for stating point guard and he picked Hickman. I probably would have piked Strawther or Hunter. But they could all do the job and Smith as well. There is plenty of glory to go around if we win. If a player is not happy and thinks he would do better at another school, I wish him the best. Coach Few decides and he has produced more NBA players than any other GU coach unless you count John Stockton 10 times which wouldn’t be unreasonable.

I think that Sallis wanting to have more opportunities in another program makes sense... what sucks is he was one of my favorite zags and I don't think many other programs develop talent like gonzaga (if any) and I'm afraid this could hurt him long run.

He's not the player Wakes Point guard was last year Appleby. . Hate to tell you we will see now how good he is in the Top conference in the country . Of Corse ACC. Not some west coast conference where Wake would be fighting it out with the Zags and St. MARYS TO SEE WHO WINS THE CONFRENCE. HE IS GOING TO GET EAT UP IN THE ACC!

How can Gonzaga bring players a long with one and done's and bringing in upper classmen in the portal? When up by 20 and still playing only 7 deep. Players want to play.

The transfers portal could be of Mark Few, results short list of player rotation!!! 🤔 you have to utilize your full bench of full potential's!!! That's why the Zags lost the first championship game against UNC. When Gonzaga two big men got into foul trouble, Mark Few didn't use Edward's from Montana. Just my opinion! Hopefully, the transfers portal helps out? Time will tell.

The transfer portal has changed the calculus of college coaching. I am sad to see him leave but it happens when a player of his level doesn't get the playing time. Good luck in the future and see you again in March of 24.

Why? Are you crazy!!. He wants to play with the big boys in the BEST CONFRENCE ACC OF CORSE. WHATS REALLY GOING TO BLOW YOU AWAY IS HES NOT EVEN GOING TO START FOR Wake. They got a white kid out of Oklahoma they recruited that's one of the best guards in the country. And he damn sure is not going to beat out the Acc s top shooter Monsanto

Sallis is a loss. Yes, he should have played more. Why? Hickman is too soft right now. Sallis was a difficult fit for our system. He’s a superb athlete slasher at guard, but isn’t a good shooter. Bolton deserved his pt. I’m so nervous to see what happens. So many players entering the draft, bigger names. LJ Cryer from Baylor. That’s like Strawther jumping in.

Interesting ... there should be a study done on all the Recruiting during Covid - how has it effected the game. Gonzaga has had a lot lower recruits do a lot more in the past. This year was very disappointing to a degree. Yes they lost Suggs Nembhard and Holmgren in the last 2 yrs - but they are full of Top 100 Recruits like never before in their history. Basically, Timme is the only Top 100 recruit on the team this year fulfilling his talent. Maybe Covid has screwed up their recruiting radar.. who knows? And now 2 more top 100s are leaving and their highest ranked recruit atm is Salis.
