Gone Home - Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder
Музыка
This Gospel song is from "The Soldier of the Cross" CD. I've tried to honor the aging veterans of WWII with the song and video. The war images are from the Battle of the Bulge. The scenic images are from the Ardennes and Belgium.
This country's aging veterans are experiencing the onset or a second, late-in-life occurrence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The estimate of one in twenty by the Veteran's Administration may actually be higher. We still need to remember their sacrifices. They still need our prayers.

I am an aging Viet Nam Vet and I have seen most every one of my old buddies wither and go home. I keep on keeping on here and I praise my Father daily for using me and allowing me to keep writing about those days n times in poetry and song. Thank you for posting this and putting your Godly Talent to impact those that listen to this and view it. God Bless You

Keep writing brother. Viet Nam era vet. Never went in country but the rest of us were support. Have brother-in-law decorated by Westmoreland for defending almost overrun fire base. Over 7000 rounds of M-16 ammo by small group of surviving defenders. He is dying slow death from exposure to Agent Orange as it destroys organs. Most did not survive but know that many war deaths are NOT ON THE BATTLEFIELD. Many are back home in rehabs, VA homes and hospitals.

I have just lost a brother who was a Marine Viet Nam vet. I had to post this song as a tribute to him and an uncle who was a WW2 vet. So touching, a timeless work, and a moving tribute to our veterans. When you get up tomorrow, thank God and a vet, your living in a great country.

I fear when the last of this generation has gone up. Their stories and experiences and knowledge will be forgotten and lost
Many of these men are of my dad's generation, grew up during the depression, and fought in WW2. Dad would be 98 if he was still around. I'd say he was a war hero, but he'd say no, the heroes were the ones that didn't make it back. I guess it's like the bumper sticker, "All gave some, Some gave ALL" Many thanks to all who served. And, thanks for the video!
My brother, Cpl. Jerry Lee Roberts, USMC, was the first Marine KIA from our town, also the first KIA from any branch, 1Sept65 Always say Thank You for serving to ALL VETERANS, without them we would be lost indeed. God bless you all.Mt.Clemens,Michigan
This song touches my heart. It reminds me of my grandfather, who was in the Navy during WWII, and my wonderful grandmother who waited at home for him to return. Now they have both gone home. I miss them and hope to visit with them again some day.
MY DAD HAS GONE HOME NOVEMBER 19, 2008. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW, HOW MUCH I LOVED YOU. HOW COULD GOD LEAVE ME HERE WITH YOU? YOU WERE MY WHOLE LIFE. I DID EVERYTHING IN LIFE FOR YOU. I AM SO EMPTY INSIDE WITHOUT YOU. I DIED THE DAY I LOST YOU. I WOULD GIVE MY LIFE FOR JUST FIVE MINUTES WTH YOU. I MISS YOU MY BEST FRIEND. ALWAYS AND FOREVER DADDY. BARBARA
The Greatest Generation! No ONE can take it away from them. My father was one of them. Let us try to walk in their footprints, IF we can. I'm not so sure we can.

Ralph Stanley's FUNERAL
When I was growing up in the fifties and sixties in a small town, only about 1500 people., Several of the men my parents age walked with limps or other signs of having been wounded in some way could be seen in our daily lives. As children we just thought it was normal. And, As children living in peace and blissful ignorance of the evil they had destroyed, we hardly recognized the sacrifice and suffering they had endured . Yes, they have gone home and I dearly miss them.

So sad. I remember a few Ww2 town characrers who were combat vets. One was 'sarge' who would go to local cafe, buy 3 cups of coffee, sit on sidewalk and "talk to his men". There were others who were "alkys" and unfairly misjudged because people did not understand the HELL they survived. God bless ALL our veterans. May we wake up and realize there are many homeless vets today that are being misjudged and cast aside by an ignorant, forgetful, society and non-caring, profit driven politicians.
Thank you for serving.
I am a bluegrass musician and I love this song, I think of my dad, brother and two nephews who have served in the military. I thank god for keeping his hands on them and keeping them safe and bringing them back home. My dad just celebrated his 94th birthday. Thanks Ricky for recording this such a beautiful song.

I LOVE TRYING TO PLAY THIS SONG....
Thank you!
77 years ago this last Nov. 25, 1944, my father, Pvt. Carl A. Divine, was killed in the Battle of the Huertgen Forest in Germany. He left a young wife and two young children (I was 3 years old, and my brother was just over 15 months old). He is buried in Henri-Chapelle American Military Cemetery in Belgium, so in a true sense, he never came home. We must never forget the sacrifices made by all those who fought to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. The pairing of this song performed by Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, with the images help bring these sacrifices to memory

Dad, brother and last brother 12-16-22, finally found it and played at funeral. Not vets, but it still applies. They sang and played it often and sounded almost as good as Ricky. All gone home.

As we age this song becomes more and more a reality with each passing day. The man who wrote this song said he left it to others to record and sing. Now he has Gone Home as well. Precious old song with a precious promise of hope. I once listened to a testimony of an elderly lady. She said when it came time for her funeral she didn't expect many people to show up for it. Reason being, she had outlived all her family and most of her friends. That testimony broke my heart when I realized there are so many old folks who don't have any of their close friends and loved ones around anymore. No wonder so many of the older Christians are looking forward to that time of blessed reunion.

This is a very beautifully written song, it certainly provokes thoughts of the sacrifices these men have made over the years. My father was in the middle east and fought against Rommel among many other things. He was just a young man and came home very broken. He never got over the fact he had killed other young men. I heard him cry in the early hours of the morning many times. He end up turning to alcohol which not only destroyed him but his family as well. He died a tragic death at just 45, the war wasn`t won for him. As much as I admire and respect these men and women that have defended our freedom I do wonder who the winner is

Thanks for the thoughtful song and video . It goes well together and it is the words and the meaning that counts. Those men from WW11 belong to us and this great country and I will never forget what they did for me.To all of you who are still with us I thank you from the bottom of heart and I thank God I was born in America and that I am free!
The Vietnam War was a bitter time for all of us alive then we spent a lot of time trying to figure this war out. I would like to memorialize, here, the three young men who died in that war. They came from Lyons & Muir Michigan, adjoining towns. The population combined of Lyons and Muir couldn't have been more than 900 people so I think we paid disproportionately in lives lost. The three are Terry Simon, Neil Potter and Herbert Loucks.
Thanks for honor the veterans. But my Dad was on the other side, but never the less, he came into American captivity. And God thanks he survived. Me as German, I will never forget the veterans, no matter wich side. be Blessed.

I saw a video on you tube about a German fighter pilot who came upon an American Bomber that was barely limping back to base, it was all shot up and barely moving: he caught up with it rapidly and came from behind and he moved even with the cockpit and could see the pilot and co-pilot clearly. The pilot of the Bomber looked out his window and saw the German pilot staring at him and his eyes became round with fear. The German pilot flew his plane around the bomber and saw it had no defense. He came even with the cockpit again and thought of his brother who was also a fighter pilot who had been shot down in combat and killed. He maintained eye contact with the pilot of the Bomber and said to himself, if I were to shoot those men it would be the same as murder, so with a nod to the American pilot he dipped his wings and flew off. He thought about the Bomber and wondered if the crew had made it back safely so he had memorized the numbers on the plane and contacted the War dept and found they had made it safely. He told his story and got their home addresses and made contact with the pilot and arranged a meeting. Their reunion was an event of great joy as the American pilot had always wondered about the German fighter pilot and the great mercy he had been shown.

"Jumping" Bill Carlisle I believe wrote this wonderful piece. Bill wrote a number of good "Novelty" tunes, and performed with great energy, often getting in a little "jump" did his act, he was a great entertainer with these numbers, but with Gone Home, he hit a lasting and significant "Out of the Park", Home Run. Gone Home will in time make everyone forget those novelty tunes he wrote, this is a significant and wonderful Gospel Hymn in it's own right. While our WWII Vets deserve every recognition we can give them, this great song applies to all of us who are experiencing loss as our dear friends and loved ones one by one pass from the scene, They've Gone Home.
