    I started to change my swing two summers ago. I changed to a strong grip, tried to get my hips moving forward & hit some duck hooks for the first time ever as I was a habitual slicer. The slice was gone & then the pulls started. I kept thinking it was because I was aligned left & sometimes I was. But the shoulder move & the closed stance helped me do better. I think you are helping me on a path to remedying this problem.

    This is such a great video because you think this would be easy, it is, but it's not - alignment on the short stuff is crazy important when you are trying to go from shooting 80 to breaking Par - the up&down putt-range is everything and pulled or pushed chips kill being a scratch golfer. It also becomes even more complicated when you start standing closer to the ball, getting that shaft more vertical (drops the lie_angle) when you are hitting those 25-yard pitch shots with slightly open shoulders & feet - and then your ball pattern is right of the flag. For me, my learned compromise was to go back to 64-degree 'normal' lie angle on my wedges, from my previous 2-degree flat lie_angles, play the majority of my chips&pitches with a slice-spin checking-to-the-right into the flag from the left with an open feet & chest aiming left approach; but then also then have a very distinct, 'drawing' setup where you have to do everything in this video, feet tiniest bit closed, shoulders square to tiny closed, start ball slightly right or target line and play the feeling of that draw-spin check. I think having both setups, as opposed to a square straight setup, at least for me, is the better way - but this fantastic video highlights perfectly what I saw myself happen.

    As always sound advice made simple. I would caveat the final drill with the club pointing towards the right hand side of the green. The drill is intended to move the path to the right - if it works too well and you end with the swing going right you are going to promote an avalanche of the shanks

    Hey so this video makes sense to me if you have an over the top swing but i typically swing 2-4 in to out. If im getting hot pulls with short irons still is that just all in the clubface control, maybe releasing the club too early? I tend to hit pushes/push draws with my longer clubs and hardly ever hook them too much.

  • @CogornoGolf

    @CogornoGolf

    Hey Caleb yeah for you if paths in to out and hitting pulls with shorter clubs thats likely early release/flip and or too much face rotation through the ball

    I found that I pull with the short irons because the swing is a bit shorter, but you rotate and release like I've made full backswing. Path and face are then pointed left. Cure is to make sure I make a full shoulder turn, and if I want to shorten the swing, do it with the arm swing.

    Eric, when I watch the guys on tv hit full wedges, it looks like they are always standing open and swinging on an out to in path. I am familiar with the concept of D plane so I understand why these shots go straight. It almost seems like there are 2 ways to hit these shots (square with a neutral path and open with an out to in path). If so, what are the pros and cons of each and why do most of the top pros seem to choose the latter method?

  • @CogornoGolf

    I've noticed this too. I had a problem not with pulling my wedges but with hooking the wedges. I found that if I concentrated on taking the club back a bit more on the outside and having an out to in path it solved the problem. I think it has something to do with minimizing spin.

    Shot a -1 under par 71 today (34/37). No bogeys until the 18th hole. 2 birdies and 15 pars through 17 holes. Hit a gap wedge on 18th hole from 100 yards for my approach. Drew it left 20+ feet of the hole with a wicked left to right break from pin high. 3 putted. I wanted a 69. I should have given myself a closer birdie putt for 69. This is why I am here to find out why I am drawing my wedges. Some days I don't. What makes me do it some days????? Is it my grip? Is it my ball position in my stance? Is it my hands (low or high), heel of club up or is the toe up? or is it the distance I am standing from the ball (too far or too close)? Am I open or closed in my stance? Is my backswing too flat or upright? Are my hands behind the ball at address when I should have more of a forward press?
