    Took this to the range today. I don’t want to jump the gun, but this may be a game changer for me. I’ve never had a good feel for clearing my lead hip through impact. This drill doesn’t give me any other option but to do it right. Thanks Eric!

    This is a really awesome drill. I have always struggled to make a full turn without lifting up. When I tried to turn with the slapshot grip, I was able to feel something in my shoulders I never felt before. I focused on that in my round and was hitting balls further, with much better contact. Now that I was finally able to turn correctly, I felt all this space at the top of my swing that I never felt before (everything was really cramped in comparison). It was great. Thanks so much Eric and Ryan.

    Coincidentally, I started using this drill this weekend (actually hitting some balls with it - better rotate that right side fast if you try it) and it's made a world of difference in my set up and swing. I recommend this video (preferably without the curse words! - can't we have some places where we don't have bad language?) to anyone having trouble grasping the takeaway and downswing and how they should look and feel. Thanks, it's like you were reading my mind as I checked out many other "split grip" videos this past weekend.

    Eric - what do you think of the 10 finger baseball grip? And do any top players use it? I totally get this drill but you could never actually hit balls with split hands. The baseball grip is like a mini version of split hands and I find I can hit balls really well using it.

    Generally it would make it easier to have it well inside the hands coming down SO LONG AS you still get sufficient depth of the hands/arms at the top with good body motions. Equal and opposite type deal on war down relative to back

    I have a question Ryan may be able to help me answer. I played Division 1 college hockey. When I started picking up golf, I developed a vicious slice because of a few characteristics about the slap shot that don't translate into the downswing. The biggest issue for me has been supination of the trail hand through contact, which causes my club face to fly open. In hockey, there is no "release" like there is in golf, in fact you generate a ton of power by throwing your weight forward and "pushing" your trail arm forward through the puck as hard as possible ice first then puck. This causes the puck to elevate when trying to go glove or blocker side high. Using your right arm in golf translates into chunks, fat shots, and slices. I have been using my lower body and rotation more to counter that, but is there anything you could take away from the slap shot that does in fact translate well into the downswing? .... If you are trying to keep the puck low you bow your top hand. (Dustin Johnson does this in his swing and I often wonder if it's something he learned from his wife's father, Wayne Gretzky)

    I’d try one of two things: a stronger grip (both hands) or the DJ top of back swing. Flex your lead wrist as much as you can in transition. Not a fun feel for many people but a good one to get the face square

  • @wallstreetoneil
    @wallstreetoneil2 жыл бұрын

    I use this all the time on the range to show anyone who has played hockey how to hit a golf ball - but you can tell that Ryan has never played ice-hockey because the Left Hand on the stick is not put on in a Strong Grip position - you actually put it on in a very, very, very weak position and then you learn to insanely bow your left lead wrist at impact so that the puck stays low and doesn't rise up and hit your own players standing in front of the goalie. I find this drill to be excellent because it: shows you that the right palm should be pointed down, it highlights that your back does most of the moving of the golf club because it is the back that turns the hockey stick up, not the arms, and finally, the hockey slapshot is very verticle, and because many, if not most new golfers swing very flat and around their bodies, this verticle feel of the club going up with the back, with the width in the arms staying there as the back turns the stick/club. Lastly, and this is the really big one, the right wrist at impact because we hit a few inches behind the puck, is in a very strong extended position so we don't break our wrists - if you ever thought of impacting the ice, with the stick, with your right wrist in flexion, to scoop the puck off the ice, the bones in your wirst would explode on impact.

    Thanks for the feedback Paul. Grew up playing hockey my whole life, played in two state championships in high school! I grip the stick like that because this is a golf video and I’m trying to help golfers play golf, not hockey players play hockey. Glad you like the drill tho. Cheers

    @@ryanhagergolf No problem Ryan and sorry - just never seen a hockey player hold the stick like that. I love this drill and I think it should be taught far more. I grew up north of the border, and my hockey claim to fame is that I was on the best team in Ontario, played D, and was fortunate enough to play a game against Mario when I was 14, he was 16, I played up a year and Quebec, at that time, played in 2 yr age groups. Mario scored 6 goals against us in the 1st period.
