GOLDENEYE | Bond escapes the Russian base

Фильм және анимация

A pilotless plane. Bond chasing it on a motorbike. A looming cliff edge. A seemingly inescapable situation… no problem for 007. Bond (Pierce Brosnan) takes extreme measures to escape the Russian base in GOLDENEYE (1995). The free-fall dive was performed for real by stuntman B.J. Worth. He said: “It was probably one of the most difficult stunts I’ve had to do for a Bond film.”

This is movie magic. There was a promotional film released that showed this snowy runway was actually an abandoned airstrip in the green fields north of London. The first appearance of the plane uses oil tanks to hide the sides and then all shots thereafter are framed low so you never see either side of the runway. The wide shot showing the facility, the plane, and runway was a terrific glass matte painting by Derek Meddings. GoldenEye holds up because care and detail were put into its sets, locations and special effects. The Nintendo 64 era likely fueled a new generation of Bond fans, and this was their first experience.

The fact that there isn't any blood when Trevelyan is shot actually makes perfect sense, because that's him faking his death- the Soviet officer just loaded a blank as the first round in his magazine, and when he "shot" Trevelyan, Trevelyan simply played dead

This was definitely meant to be Daltons movie with the Soviet theme and the more dark story than the other brosnan titles. Im still glad Brosnan got the role though because he and sean bean abosolutely nailed their roles and saved the franchise. A View to a Kill would've also been a better movie if Dalton was in the role, and lastly Pierce Brosnan deserved to go out better than Die Another Day. I've never been one to ask for realism in films, especially Bond films, but leaping off a motorcycle over a cliff in the vain hope that not only is your trajectory cock-on, but that you will reach terminal velocity in record-breaking time and outrun a plane that is motoring downwards...well. This is why this is only my second favourite Bond film.

I think it’s nothing more than sheer luck that the writers give him that allows him to get inside the plane while it’s falling and be able to steer it up in time. You know he’s going to make it, otherwise he would be dead. And we can’t have that.

I really like the part when the general shoots the trigger-happy soldier, even though it's inconsequential story progression, it say lot about his character. Show how petty, vindictive and ruthless he is. It's very illustrative. It's one thing to discipline a soldier for acting stupid, but killing them out of spite is goes too far. Villains punish their subordinates for failure, but they usually do it after the fact not when fighting the hero. Sometimes actions speak louder than words and its a great way to conveyed a characters nature.

Such a shame that this was Pierce Brosnan's one truly good Bond film. It's actually one of the best Bond movies ever, superbly made, and it realized Brosnan's full potential in the role - tough and gritty, a total badass, but charming and debonair as well. The other three he had to do were so wanting compared to this, and as a result he doesn't get the credit he should.
