One thing about Greta Lee this award season is she’s here to FIGHT for that nomination. Hope she succeeds.

That Best Director category might be the best we had in years. Just reading the names is insane. Wonderful achievements throughout.

Box office achievement sounds like the best popular movie flop idea from the Oscars

"Best Blockbuster" isn't a terrible category idea. It is still qualitative, but within a qualifying financial benchmark. "Best Box Office Achievement" makes it sound like making the most money means you automatically win.

Let it be known that The Awards Contender got up at 5AM so I didn’t have to.
The Good: I'm always thrilled to see women nominated in behind-the-screen categories. Go, Greta Gerwig and Celine Song! The Bad: Disney makes a movie that almost everyone -- critics, audiences -- agrees is BAD, yet it still gets nominated for Best Animated Feature?! What were they thinking? Instead of Wish, the Hollywood Foreign Press should have nominated the movie Disney was too afraid to make (Nimona). The Sad: I knew in advance that Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret was going to be shut out completely from all categories, but it still breaks my heart. Also, I was hoping hard that The Color Purple would turn out to be good enough to score a nomination for Best Picture Musical or Comedy.
@jakecruz2515
7 ай бұрын
Also the fact that Wish got in over Ninja Turtles is so stupid. I expected Nimona to not get in, even tho I love that movie, but I am happy Suzume got in!
@kelleyceccato7025
7 ай бұрын
@@jakecruz2515 Exactly. Ninja Turtles Mayhem is another movie both the critics and the public liked. At least I can understand Super Mario's nomination because the public embraced it even though the critics didn't. But who's throwing their weight behind Wish? Oh, right -- the studio.
Outside of the holdovers underperforming, I’m very happy with this list. Barbenheimer is coming to the Oscars big time!
@laurajones1773

I think Barbenheimer will win both of the Best Picture awards.
I do hope "Past Lives" is re-released in theatres. I missed that one when it was out. It didn't last long here in Phoenix.
Alma Pöysti - yeah
YAY!! Didnt expect a video about this so soon!! 🙂
I just realized upon watching your video that Zone of Interest was nominated for Drama Picture but Jonathan Glazer wasn't nominated for director? That's a split I didn't expect to see!

Hope Oppenheimer sweeps its categories. My favourite film of the year. Love the love for Past Lives. I cried with happiness for Andrew Scott. Wish All Of Us Strangers got more noms but stoked for him.
I’m so happy to see Joe Hisaishi get a nomination for The Boy and the Heron score
I was really holding out hope for Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. I'd kick out a couple of those nominees in favor of Rachel McAdams and the movie itself.

another excellent video!!
Past Lives love is real. Zone and May/December are becoming serious threats. Color Purple inexplicably underperformed. 6 nominees per category seem to hit the sweet spot. So satisfying. Oscar, can you hear me?
THe Holdvers got jobbed for screenplay. It was better than most of the movies that were nominated ahead. Could have replaced Anatomy of a Fall.

Surprise the holdvers dont take screenplay nommnation. And will be surprise if they win in acting without screenplay nommnation. The holdover maybe win for leading acting in commedy
So happy for Past Lives!
Past Lives, The Zone of Interest, and Anatomy of a Fall getting nominations made me extremely happy.
My Dream Winners: Paul Giamatti and Bradley Cooper(fight me), Emma Stone and Carey Mulligan, Greta Gerwig for director, Melton and Blunt supp.actors, and Barbenheimer BPs, "What Was I Made For" best song
Your enthusiasm for past lives makes me want to watch it
i love the nominations, Happy for Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Holdovers, and Killers of the Flower Moon. I am so happy for Fantasia, she is the first American Idol winner to be nominated, She won season 3, Jennifer Hudson was also on that season.
So happy to see Jodie Foster and Julianne Moore, the two Clarice Starling, in the same category !

That’s a coincidence. Although Jodie Foster is a much better Clarice Starling than Julianne Moore. Hannibal is a horrible sequel to The Silence of the Lambs. That sequel doesn’t hold a candle to The Silence of the Lambs.

Super Mario Bros got 3 nominations, tying it with Spider-verse. You know what that means. DO THE MARIO
Your favorite movie is really trending. PAST LIVES
I like that they increased the slots from 5 to 6. I think the Oscars should something similar.
I had the same reactions you did over “Past Lives!” All in all…great nominations all around
Very happy with double nominations for Emma Stone!
So happy for Past Lives, Barbie and Saltburn. Bummed and shocked that The Color Purple missed for motion picture comedy/musical.
Great presentation by Cedric. ❤
partner and I just played the guessing game - he had the list oof nominees from this morning and I was trying to guess who made it in. The way I screamed when I guessed Celine for director and he said YES! Jumping for joy! Sad for Teo Yoo and while I'm ecstatic for Rosamund and Barry, Saltburn deserved more nods as well. I'm so excited for this awards season though. We're here watching each video with you Brian - Here's to a great awards season!
No Color Purple in Best Picture/Com/Musical...interesting...lol. No "major" surprises IMHO. Glad to see the "love" for Past Lives...and the nomination for Andrew Scott.

Timothee was great in Wonka, that’s why they nominated him. It’s such a charming performance. I was so surprised how great he was. Didn’t think he had it in him to be so upbeat and positive on screen but he blew everyone away in my family.
I was as elated as you were in your reaction about PAST LIVES' 5 Big Nominations namely best motion picture-drama, best foreign language film, best director (Celine Song), best actress (Greta Lee), and best screenplay (Celine Song). 🎉🎉🎉 I have a soft spot for PAST LIVES. I know Oppenheimer is probably hard to beat at the GG (and the Oscars), but indie films like PAST LIVES pave the way for less known but brilliant filmmakers like Celine Song, and practically unknown but nevertheless awesome actor like Greta Lee. Like you, PAST LIVES is my TOP film for 2023 - followed closely by Oppenheimer and Barbie.
I hope Suzume gets some Oscar love in the future.

Holdovers is getting shut out! Also I’ve been saying since February that this season is gonna be Poor Things vs. Oppenheimer, so the Golden Globes has me like, “Oh my god, it’s happening!”
I cannot fathom how they put May December into comedy.
So happy they nominated Timothee Chalamet. He was so much fun in Wonka and it was refreshing to see him show his range in such a delightful and upbeat performance. That makes all three Wonka actors well deserved golden globe nominees
YES! You MUST see "Fellow Travelers"! It spans 30 years between 1950s to 1980s surviving being a gay man. I grew up in the 80s and it's completely authentic! It's only 8 episodes so it's not a huge commitment of time! WATCH IT!

Jack Black has another nomination under his belt for Peaches in the Super Mario Brothers Movie. Could the Academy be this cool? If Everything is Awesome can get in could this? Probably not, but I would love to see a Grand Piano rendition of this played on the stage at the Oscars. 😂
Much as I want Bella Ramsey to win best TV actress I can’t see anyone beating Sarah Snook

Sarah Snook was exceptional this season of Succession. I'm hoping she wins.
They should give 6 nominations at the Oscars too....many good films and acting this year!😮😊
Here’s something no one’s talking about, Barbie is tied with Cabaret for the 2nd most nominated film at the Globes, 1st place being Nashville
I knew it was very unlikely, but I hoped Teyana Taylor could have been nominated for her incredible performance in A Thousand and One.

Agreed. I think Taylor and Sandra Huller in Anatomy of a Fall gave the 2 best performances all year. I can't pick between those.
I have A LOT of catching up to do. Lots of movies to see.
The Golden Globes have covered pretty much all bases by going the critics' choice route and having six nominees in all categories. I am still concerned that in a tight Oscar's race for 5 spots, the academy will end up snubbing Celine Song and pick a wildcard (maybe Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall or even Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest or horror of horrors, Alexander Payne for The Holdovers)

My 10 year old grandson was singing Peaches Peaches Peaches and I thought something was wrong with him! Lolol
Going through what has been crowned thus far (as of this posting) from various critics groups it looks like Charles Melton is the serious contender for this years Best Supporting Actor Oscar and that Divine Joy Randolph is his equivalent for The Holdovers. Paul Giamatti seems to be the current favorite for Best Actor (which I think would be a splendid win as he has been seriously overlooked in the past) with Emma Stone for Poor Things and Lilly Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon still duking it out for a lead performance. Both seem neck and neck at this point although that could change in the coming weeks. Best Film lock seems to be Killers of the Flower Moon with Best Director going to Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer. Anatomy of a Fall seems to be locked (at this point) for Original Screenplay with either Nolan (Oppenheimer) or Noah Bambauch/Greta Gerwig (for Adapted) Obviously we are only at the start of the awards season and there is still many more to come so much of this could rise or slide in the coming weeks.
