Bea Arthur was in The Jefferson’s and, then, she got her own show, Maude! Then, Betty White she has a long history with tv and, when, I started growing up in the 70’s, I first watched her on the The Dick Van Dyke Show, But, they all were on the Mary Tyler Show and, they all were guest actors on a ton of shows for generations and, also were in movies through out their career!

As a young gay boy in Miami back in the day, we'd be at the local watering hole for the run up to the Golden Girls coming on tv on their particular air night. As soon as "Thank you for being a friend" song came on, the house fell silent, and all eyes were on the tv's scattered all over the bar. Nobody moved, and we all laughed with the girls. It was an event everyone looked forwards to. Everything stopped until the show was over. Only then could the night continue !! Oh, to be young again !!!

Bea and Rue were good friends IRL. Rue was the one who got Bea to do this show. I just read Rue's book and while there may have been some tension with Betty, which was due more to the difference in their personalities, they didn't hate each other. Rue said that the 4 of them would go for lunch every day and Bea would insist on waiting to leave til all were ready to go. Like any relationship, especially ones that last years, you're going to disagree or get on each other's nerves from time to time but it doesn't mean you hate the person.

You are wrong; Rose was already written as naive. During a casting session, Rue and White switches and read their roles. Originally, they wanted Rue for Rose, and White for Blanche. They switched reading the rollss one day during a casting session. THAT is how Betty they ended up in those parts, NOT the nonsense you say in your podcast. If you're gonna post stuff, post the truth.

Yes. It wasn't the Producers' idea to offer Betty the role of Rose. They were typecasting Betty and Rue for their roles of Sue Ann Nivens (The Mary Tyler Moore Show) and Vivian (in Maude). It was Jay Sandrich, the Pilot Director, who watching Rue read for Rose noticed she wasn't right for the part, so he asked her to read Blanche, she nailed it. Then and there, he decided the switching of roles.. 🪻🌿

Dorothy and Sophia playfully teasing each other reminds me a lot of my and my mother and it was our mother/daughter show. Anytime one of us was depressed or upset we would put on Golden Girls and eat cheesecake (sorry Bea). Later, after my mom and dad got divorced the show hit home even more as me and my mom got even closer. I wish these ladies were here today for me to tell them just how much they mean to me and how much of an impact on me and my childhood. I cannot watch without tears either of happiness or sadness. Even used to joke with 2 of our friends we were gonna grow up to be the golden girls. ❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰🥰. Rest in peace queens you don’t know how loved you are and how missed.

I was 23 when this show first aired back in '85, and I was hooked. To this day, I watch the seven seasons repeatedly enough that I can recite any of their dialogues (drives my husband nuts lolol). Unfortunately, I also became a critic about the storyline inconsistency over the years. The writers could not keep track of simple but important timelines. Largest example: Dorothy and Stan had been married for 38 years, she being pregnant as the reason, yet neither child was 38 years old. Kate and Michael were far younger (one episode has Dorothy state Michael is 23 while his fiance is 44). Or the different genders of both Rose's or Blanche's children and grandchildren. But having said that, and now that I am FINALLY their age, this show will always have a special place in my heart.

Bea said she had a hard time liking someone who was always so positive, and happy. No one can be that happy all the time, Bea once said. A bitter sarcastic aging actress, would have an issue with a lighthearted jovial type of person. Bea knew she was hardened, and she did try to lighten up around betty. Besides, with betty around, even the grumpiest person finds themselves smiling.

@debbywoobe...: That's true and I think the lines were planned accordingly and can be clearly seen that way. I can also only imagine that Elaine Stritch wouldn't care for the cast either and would be just as much or even more so very hard to work with. Let's say if they cast her to be Dorothy's Sister.

Its not surprising they didn't always hang out and be the closest best friends off set. They were really all the stars yet all co-stars. All powerful women in their own right. They always remained professional though. Thats impressive. They spent so much time together working that they needed time with their own real lives separate from the closeness they had on screen.

Estel Getty was a stage performer on Broadway for any number of years before being asked to read for the Golden Girls- she had been a stage performer starting in her mid to late 20s and received many accolades in her performance in Torch Song Trilogy. She was a staunch advocate for the LGBT community!

It seems like time just flew by from the show's beginning in 1985 until it's ending in 1992. I never missed a single episode. I was 24yo when "The Golden Girls" started, and 31yo when it ended. My life changed a lot during those years. But I never let life get in the way on Saturday nights when the show was on. It was my favorite TV show. I watched it a lot with my grandmother, who really loved the show, as well. Great memories. I sure miss my Mema's laughter.😢

The interesting thing is that they were in their 50s but dressed like they were in their 70s..., Because of how they dressed, I thought they were much older than they really were. Rose was my favorite, I miss Betty White, I loved her St. Olaf stories, & the dance competition where Betty shows how talented she really was will always be my favorite scene :) I can actually see Elaine Stritch as Dorothy, both had a sharp tongue, that would have been interesting.

The only thing that irked me about Sofia was the fact he character was born and raised in Sicily, but didn't have a Sicilian accent, it was more of a Brooklyn accent. You don't lose your accent to gain another, no matter how long you're in a new country or setting.

@robertmiller5516: At one time Elaine Stritch was going to be considered to play Dorothy but her vile language put a damper on casting her. She'd probably give the other cast members in the Golden Girls a very hard time and really hard to work with. Her ways were also very similar to Tallulah Bankhead when it comes to doing her things her own way disregarding what the directors would want.
