Gold vs Fools Gold - Backcountry Testing

This video describes three simple and easily conducted tests for determining if a rock sample contains real Gold or Fools Gold; also known as Pyrite and Chalcopyrite. These three test are demonstrated for the viewer, so the viewer will be able to perform these simple tests on their own after watching this video.
These tests are useful for individuals interested in prospecting, rockhounding, treasure hunting, backpacking, fishing, hunting, or any other activity which requires spending time in the outdoors.
The tests mentioned in this video include;
1. Visual Characteristics of the minerals; Gold, Pyrite and Chalcopyrite. How to use a Jewelers Loop to quickly identify these special characteristics.
2. Continuity Test of minerals to determine if they are good conductors of electricity, or insulators and prevent electrical current.
3. Shade testing of the minerals to show how light impacts the color, brightness and luster of Gold, Pyrite and Chalcopyrite.

    I found what I thought was gold in some copper ore with sulfides, a buddy of mine said it was pyrite. After this video I know it was gold. Cool to know, good video.

    Awesome video! There are striations on Tellurides like Sylvanite and Calaverite, but thanks for teaching more than a few things!!

    This was so informative, thanks! I found a rock with a vain of what looked like gold, in gold country. My heart quickened & I got the fever for a day. Didn’t find anymore like it but I showed it to my geologist friend at home who basically did the same as your friend. I was kinda bummed. But I still have the rock & enjoy it regardless. Or in spite of. Lol

    Good video, great that you had a rock with both in it so folks dont throw away fools gold cause they can be together.

    Absolutely. They often come together, especially the copper sulfides.

    I really like that lesson. Thanks. I wanted to tell you about that wind in the book cliffs. We camped about a mile from the Antoine Robidoux inscription and about every 5 minutes that wind sounded like a freight train coming and the we thought the tent was going to blow away. You’ve probably experienced that wind. Rick

    I hate the wind, I'd prefer rain, snow maybe even some small pieces of hail. Anything but the wind. I still have to make it to the Antoine inscription, I've seen lots of pictures of it, but haven't made it yet in person. The wind can get nasty in the Bookcliffs, that's for sure. I just finished a book you may enjoy, its called, "Tales from Indian Country" by George Emery Stewart, JR. Very good book!! He talks a lot about the Bookcliffs in the book. Its out of print and expensive, but worth it. Amazon has it (Used Books).

    Another good vid thanks so much. I was out walking a small creek the other day and spotted some big rocks in the ground. I’m wondering if they are bed rock. There is lots of granite in the creek as well. I’m gonna take a video and post it on my channel. Thanks much!

    Slow your roll, Iron pyrite will have continuity because of the iron so would silver, cooper.Don’t be fooled again

    Did you even watch the video or are you just trolling? I explain why they don't in the video and even give a demonstration. Both pyrite and chalcopyrite are sulfide minerals, which are very poor conductors of heat and electricity. You can have a pyrite crystal the size of your thumbnail and it still wont conduct electricity. This is just basic science.
