Gold Prospecting Tips and Tricks For the SE US: YOU NEED to Be Near the SOURCE to FIND GOOD GOLD!!

This video delves in depth into the relationship between placer gold and its hard rock source within the Southeastern Piedmont Region of the United States. It should stress more than anything that to find good amounts of placer gold in this region you need need need need to be in most cases less than 1 to 2 miles from the source the gold came from.
We look at examples of both fine gold and chunky gold as well as historical evidence of placer mining with LiDAR maps. All point to the fact that the gold in this region hasn't traveled more than 1 to 2 miles from its original source in the bedrock.

This was very interesting and informative, Matt. I'm near the Western NC area and they mined that area heavily since at least the 1850's. The Spanish were in this area getting gold back in the 1500's, I believe. They found a mold for making Spanish coins in another part of this county. They also found a bunch of arrowheads in the same area, surmising that there was a falling out between the Spanish and the Indians.

I definitley see a difference in my small creek gold and my river gold the creek gold is coarser than the river gold even the fine gold from the creek is coarse when viewed with a loupe.

Any idea how far either are from the source? I’ve generally noticed my creek gold from on top of the source is way coarser then the river gold from on top of the source.

Good video! Around 2:39, is it just the lighting or some of those specks actually silver-colored? I see traces of silver stuff like that in the pan frequently (with the occasional bit of gold) at one place here in the NC Piedmont. I'm guessing it's native silver, but I've never accumulated enough of it to find out what it is.

I believe in this case it’s the lighting. But it is common to have a silvery colored heavy sand in your cons that is heavier then the black sand. That silvery sand is zircon.

Thanks, man. Excellent stuff here. So many people advise to "go where gold has been found before" but never elaborate on whether that means within 50 meters or 5 miles. In your experience, is finding hard rock gold or free gold near the surface in the S. Piedmont a fantasy? Just about every surface/placer mine I've been to so far has deep pits and trenches anywhere from 4-10 feet deep. Is it even worth metal detecting the surface in these areas? Or is gold almost always under multiple feet of soil and overburden? Cheers.

People find placer gold all the time in the SE Piedmont. Hard rock species pieces are much more rare but they are there. Yes it’s worth metal detecting around the old mines. I’ve seen amazing nuggets found with metal detectors mere feet from old shafts and other workings.

Can you recommend a resource for dos and don'ts regarding the legality of prospecting...i.e. when does it go from prospecting to mining? Obviously, get permission for private lands, but what are waterways considered? Also, to whom do you sell your gold? Can you sell it raw or do you have to have it pure enough to pour into ingots?

Thanks! And I will say that I generally don’t do videos on laws because every state is different. As far as selling gold we are currently making and selling paydirt bags but generally in the past I’ve usually just sold to individuals or to clubs. And just as raw placer gold not as ingots.

Hey teach! I'm in a well-documented part of the Cincinnati Arch Southeast Cincinnati glacial maximum. But I've been in Florida surfing for 25 yrs i just got back what do you think of this area? The Guys tell me it's here and it's actually chunkier then it is north of the area were they see more of a flour. I'm standing in heavily eroded clay creek bottoms. I can see bedrock layers/conglomerates 10ft above in some cuts. what do I make of this? 😊 Wuddah u think?

Indiana has great glacial gold. I’d be looking for areas of glacial outwash where you are. Basically where massive flows of water took and sorted and deposited glacial material out past the southern most glacial advance. Everything there is glacial gold. There is no hard rock sources anywhere in the area. So this video doesn’t really pertain to your current area it’s for the SE US. But I hope this helps.

Thnx man! it's tricky that I have found some pretty great geologic resources for my area.🤙 Thanks bro
