Most Americans who play at karate don't have any understanding of what they just saw. Many years ago, when I was young and active in the martial arts with one of the great Okinawan trained American masters, I learned after associating with the "high ranks" that I had not ever really learned how to "work" a kata. I learned then, that to work a kata meant you could do it frontward, backward, left and right (meaning mirrored/flipped over), and that you could turn every single move into a killing blow of the attacker. And, as these two teams performed it, a dojo that actually teaches you to work a kata would look like this. To take it a step further, the performer and attackers would wear the equivalent of a very heavy catcher's chest pad - 3" thick padded chest and groin protector - and all body blows would be delivered full speed. Head blows were delivered at 1/4 speed to a padded head gear with plexiglass face shield/bubble. Of course, you can tell from these performers that they have spent countless hours practicing, learning the basics, running over and over and over through the choreography of killing blows.

Both excellent very intense katas. I thought the red Shotokan had more snap. The blue shito was more difficult with showing of smoother blocks. Both very good. Even doing katas, i hate to step in front of either of them. 😂😂😂

Much like how one says “visualize yourself doing it” or “see yourself doing it”. If you can’t envision yourself preforming then usually you won’t have the confidence to do X. In this case Fight.
