    These are very very popular in the California desert. People plant thousands in their yard as a ground cover. This is another cool way of growing them!! Thanks!

    I love that shape so much, what a cool idea. Mine are still babies, they had a hard time establishing this year. I sprayed BT/Neem and put a little of the Bayer Rose Care which is a 6-9-6 on them mostly because they were getting decimated by pests and they seemed to appreciate that. That rose care stuff is so great for ornamental plants.

    What’s your recommendation for watering frequency and length of watering for lantanas?

  • @thechaosgardener

    Great question. I use drip watering. I water every 8 hours for 10 minutes in early summer with dedicated 1/2 gph emitters per plant. I dial it back to 3 minutes or less approaching winter and up to 15 minutes mid summer. I have no watering days twice a week for all of my plants to stimulate deep root growth.

    Thanks for this and for the lantana playlist! In here, you mention pulling the green stems from the trunk instead of pruning them, that way less branches come back. Why does pulling off vs. pruning make a difference?

  • @thechaosgardener

    @thechaosgardener

    10 ай бұрын

    Great question I probably should have talked about that. With Lantana, pruning and leaving behind any bit of stem seems to result in 2+ future branches. Tearing them off typically results in callusing and from my experience results in less future suckering from those positions. That’s how I maintain a tree type structure. I fertilize these with cow manure so they grow way faster than normal and thicker branches than normal.

    I have many different varieties of lantana on my property and I have noticed that some colors grow off old wood and some come straight from the ground, is this normal? Everyone says to cut them all to ground when dormant but I have some huge lantana and I am afraid if I do that they will not be huge again that following spring if I cut all the old wood off they have to start back from the ground. I hope that makes sense lol. Are the certain varieties that don't grow off old wood? I am in Texas zone 8b

  • @thechaosgardener

    @thechaosgardener

    2 жыл бұрын

    All of mine grow off of old wood. I accidentally stepped on one once and broke the trunk off at the ground though and that triggered about 20 suckers to come up and create what looked like a hedge. The trick with lantana is lots of pruning. Every time you trim a branch it will fork into 2 branches.

    Your lantanas are beautiful. I have been trying to get an answer to a question I have about the smaller looking spiky flower buds (for lack of a better word) that do not bloom. I can see some in your videos but I cannot add a photo to show you exactly. Can you explain the spiky looking non bloom thingy?

  • @thechaosgardener

    @thechaosgardener

    8 ай бұрын

    I have not observed that exact thing but I would speculate that it might be a nutrient issue. I would recommend fertilizing with a nice aged manure. I give my Lantanas a half bag of manure each every 6 months. I spread it around the base not touching the trunk and then add some mulch to cover the manure to keep the nutrients from not getting absorbed. Alternatively you can also dig the manure into the soil. Mulch is pretty important too because it adds carbon to the soil which supports healthy mycorrhizal fungi which is what really makes those huge and plentiful blossoms

  • @carolynsmith3191

    Thank you. I can see a few on your plants. I think it is probably normal but I am curious what they are. My plants are fairly new so they haven't gotten their mojo yet. New blooms are coming but am curious about the spiky ones that don't appear to be blooms. May need to take a visit to a nursery. Thank you so much for your videos. You have a nice flair of explaining things in a short period of time.

    @@carolynsmith3191i just rewatched the video and I see what you're talking about. I honestly have no idea what that happens. I know my passionfruit vines do something similar with mini flower buds that never mature. I speculate that's more common in less mature lantanas because in passionfruit vines they do the mini flowers the first year or two and then after the third year it's mostly all mature flowers.
