Back in the day, it wasn't uncommon to use Creek Gravel right out of the creek to build roads. Then, later, the crushed gravel was added.

This was in an area that was only recently (past 2 year) turned into a road. And a decent amount of the rounded gravel was not in the existing trail/road. But still not sure. When ever I get back down there I’ll make it a point to expand the search into the woods. Bench and terrace gravels are common in this area and were mined in the past.

Also old logging roads were built with creek run gravel. Check for float below that area at different elevations.

We're probably just north of your location in NC. Our house is at 2,300' elevation and we have a lot of large, rounded river rocks.

The gravel is there because the previous owner used to get it from the river and put it on the roads. He actually put it all the way up to the highway. I am on the same driveway. I get into them every time I scrape the driveway

I’m not sure. Some of it was well off the trail and seemed like it was not placed by humans. But it’s hard to say. Regardless it had gold in it.
