    I operated this engine during the 1990s. I'm the engineer in the opening sequence (with all the smoke). The fireman accidentally hit the fuel atomizer valve handle and brought the atomizer pressure down to zero, instead of the usual 12-15psi. Although the cameraman had requested smoke, my fireman rather overdid it! You also see the back of my head in the lower left corner at 6:50-6:57. :)

    No. It was in need of a major restoration, including new smokebox and a new firebox. It was at a point it was no longer safe to operate. Restoration got started, but unfortunately politics got in the way, and that was that.

    Finally found this footage that was in early 1990s before Hurricane Andrew struck. I have noticed a Ferris wheel that was there till Hurricane Andrew knocked it down. I had been to that place 3 times during Halloween in 1988, 1989 and 1990. Now if only I can see the entrance sign near the entrance to the attraction that said "Welcome to Gold Coast Railroad"

    Awesome Footage! i Wish i was Born before 1992 to see the 113 Running. It would of been Awesome if it was still Operating here at the Museum. According to the Gold Coast Railroad Museums Website. Apparently in 2009 a Member of the Museum Started a Restoraion Project on the 113 which was later Abandoned.

    As a volunteer who has some to the workers, the reason it was left is because the 113 needed a whole firebox rebuilt and that would have cost 750,000 and the 153 needed the same thing plus new pistons and the right cab side pipe broke, in fact the could not even calculate how much I would have cost

    My Uncle was one of the founders of the museum and I had the pleasure of seeing both the 153 and the 113 in operation, both at the same time! In the mid 70's my Dad and I spent a summer working in the 113 helping restore her and get her recertified for operation. I had the pleasure of even "driving" the engine under the careful supervision of Bob B. I hate to see both of these engines no longer operational. I don't know if they are beyond repair or just beyond the GCRM's ability to fund or find funding for it. I think the sister 4-6-2 #145 is at the Creed Museum in Colorado, but I can not verify it. I understand it is being or has been restored to operational condition.

    +Gary M I won't get into the politics of the museum but when you run off your biggest donors, things don't go well. 113 was operational before Hurricane Andrew. 153 was not. Time is up on the flues in both. Boiler would need major work on both. We did do a couple of corner patches in the firebox of 113 and it would need a complete stripping down to do properly. 20 years ago the price was about $250, 000 dollars to repair the things needed on the 113 with closer to $750,000 needed for the 153. Now days, 113 would likely fall into what was 153's price range or more.

    USSC started to restore the 148 and they are going to run excursions when it is back up and operational. They contacted me to see if the GCRM wants to sell the 153 because it was closest to the 158 in design and the wanted to have two operations locomotives. I believe the GCRM declined and it was discussed that the 113 may be up instead but I am not sure the USSC want that one do to the differences.

    I had Steam Corporation (restored 611 J Class) set up to go there and meet me and do a evaluation on both to see which one was most restorable. GCRM declined so there they sit. I am waiting for the museum to fail and then we will see what can be done. Yes Politics is rampant there and they dont seem to want to change whatever it is that they think they have. Last time I was there, I was the only one there. People in the front "ticket office" were rude and could care less. It was about 30 minutes to closing and they did everything they could to run me off...I just went to look at the two steamers to see what condition they were in. Yes 750,00 to a million is about right....they dont even want to try.

    Most mainline railroads allow steam engines to operate provided they are properly FRA-certified for main line operations. The 113 would need a good million dollars worth of restoration, including a new firebox. There are very few steam shops left in the United States that can do that kind of work.

    Thurlow B. Weed I live near Strasburg, PA and I know that the SRR mechanical shop does all kinds of restorations on locos and rolling stock. • @rvninnorthcarolina3377

    @rvninnorthcarolina3377

    @@Bassocontinued Yes it can be done. Steam Ops can do this type of work. Go to the United States Sugar Corporation website and look for the restoration efforts on 148...sister to the 113 and 153. Steam Ops is doing that restoration as they did for the J Class 611 for the Virginia Transportation Museum. That 148 was in worse condition and they are bringing it back to almost new. Same can be said the the UP's efforts on the Big Boy. With enough money anything is possible. 148 is being rebuilt at the USSC engine shops...the 611 was done at the NC Transporation Museum at the ex-Southern Railway roundhouse in Salisbury, NC. I had talked with Scott from Steam Ops 3 years ago and we had a price for him to go to Miami and look at both the 113 and 153 and let us know which was the better candidate for a restore and give us an idea of the expected cost to start raising funds. Unfortunately, the GCRM had a major power issue and that created unexpected major costs so the put that on hold and never revisited. They seemed to be somewhat interested but not too excited, so I am guessing the idea was dead man walking anyway. I really thought it would create additional activity at the museum and I was going to go social with a fund raising campaign so as to keep the costs isolated from the rest of the operations but they were not excited....so they remain static displays. I would imagine before long most if not all of GCRM will become static.

    It would need a very major overahaul to be operational again. One of the things it needs it a new firebox. This is a major job because it means taking apart the most complicated part of the entire boiler. Also needs new flues and superheaters. There is no facility in Florida that could do the work, and the engine would have to be shipped north to one of the few remaining shops that could do this, which alone would be a considerable expense. A few million dollars would have the engine steam-worthy again and FRA-compliant.

  • @rvninnorthcarolina3377

    @@bw4t Thurlow...logistically and where to go was figured out. Closest facility was in NC at the Transportation Museum. Steam Operations could do the work. It would be partially disassembled and put on flat cars and transported to NC. Many others have done this so this is not breaking ground in anyway. Yes it would be expensive and it would take time. We were thinking around 1 million. Two big issues are fund raising and ongoing operational costs. Third bigger issue, CSX wants nothing to do with Steam on its tracks (at least at the time we brought it up three years ago) and the FEC is an unkown but the GCRM has to go over CSX to even get to FEC right of way. I believe unless the GCRM wants to sell the 113 (153 is a National Historical so its going nowhere) and someone takes it somewhere else to run excursions, they are both relegated to static displays...or until the political climate changes within the Board of Directors and there is some interest to move forward. I helped restore the 113 to operational condition along with my uncle (Bill Godfrey) and my father with Bob and Louis Beekman and others in the mid 70's. At that time we had the 153 and the 113 operational and it was a blast. I have copies of the paperwork from that time and know what was done to it and even the FCC certification paperwork...I was working it very hard three years ago to try to get some momentum to get any interest at all to restore one of them. Hit a huge wall..... Waiting for the 148 to get done and then I will go there. I think that is the closest I will get to the 153 or 113 running. I can tell you that the USSC really wants the 153 since it is close to the 153 in design so if GCRM starts to falter, you can bet the 153 will be going back to USSC and then she will be rebuilt. Don't know about the 113...but if I had the cash :-)

    @@rvninnorthcarolina3377 It is so frustrating, given that the "Gold Coast Steam Railroad" came into being for the purpose of preserving operational steam. @@bw4t My Uncle was the one that started the whole thing, then at the University of Miami I think in 1957 or so. He loved steam (steam boats, steam tractors, steam generators and Steam locomotives) and he loved the railroad. I caught the bug from him in the late 60's and became active in the GCRM when it was located next to the Ftl Airport. I spent many a day and evening in the train house pulling wire and turning wrenches on the 113 when we were getting it ready to run...we figured the 153 was on borrowed time and needed the 113 up and running. There was a story that Bob Beakman was complaining to my Uncle Bill that the "damn thing will never run" when we had it hooked up to the 153 to pressurize the boiler for the first time...while Bob was complaining the engine started to move and Uncle Bill smiled at him and told him "shut up Bob the damn thing is moving!". Anyway there was a short time we had both running and that was fun. Bill also had a private railroad car there "the Sea Level" that we used to hang out as well. He used to take it out on trips via Amtrak...something I unfortunately never experienced. He sold it sometime in the late 70's and then moved to California to be a Director for Amtrak Western Operations. After he left (was getting political then) I moved on as well and never really got involved until three years ago when I wanted to see if we could spearhead an effort to Fireup one of the two. I got involved with Scott from Steam Operations (he is doing the 148 now and also did the JClass 611) and he and I had a plan to assess and come up with a budget, but it was quickly squelched and that was that. I got a call 8 months ago from him looking for someone to talk to because the USSC wanted to buy the 153. The 153 and 148 are nearly identical and they wanted to have two running locomotives and he fealt as they built parts for one it could be used on the other. The 113 is older and does not share as many parts. Of course that was DOA as well. Tow Locomotives with cool history...sitting and rusting with no chance...makes me very sad.

    @@rvninnorthcarolina3377 Of course, 153 wasn't operational when I was working there. But 113 was very special to me, definitely my baby. I had a very good feel for her, and even set a record for fuel efficiency. I think it was about 18:1 IIRC. There was also the day when the fool diesel crew opined the 113 incapable of pulling the side dump gon from the bottom of the South Pad, what with all that ancient equipment with dry bearings in front of it, and pulling out onto a curve. Yeah, well, lay a bead of sand behind me going in to hook up, then sanders open again coming out, working the throttle in and out to give it a huge head of steam then cutting it off before the drivers could spin. Marched right out of there, they radioed me to slow down even! Pushing the string back into the yard on the S curve was a bit touchy, but she did it. Since they had bet me a large pepperoni pizza that 113 could do the move, I took them up on it, and really enjoyed my victory pizza that night. 113 has also proven over the years since then to be a very lucky number for me.
