Aqua regia is a very strong acid formed by the combination of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated hydrochloric acid, both of which are strong acids. It is generally used to remove metals like gold and platinum from substances, especially in microelectronics and micro-fabrications labs. Aqua regia formula and recipe Since aqua regia is just a mixture of two strong acids, it doesn’t have a chemical formula of its own. However, it can be represented as HNO3+3 HCl, which basically indicates that it’s a mixture of nitric acid (HNO-3) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). Aqua regia solution is usually a yellow, reddish-orange, fuming liquid and has a rapidly changing composition. The traditional aqua regia solution is comprised of a 3:1 molar mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, respectively. Note that concentrated nitric acid is about 65% and concentrated hydrochloric acid is nearly 35%, so the volume ratio is generally 1 part of concentrated nitric acid to 4 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid. Another important precaution to consider is that one should add nitric acid to hydrochloric acid, and not the other way round. Usually, they make around 10 milliliters of aqua regia for experimental purposes in labs. Needless to say, since we are dealing with very strong acids here, participating chemists should wear proper protective lab gear and the apparatus should be handled with the utmost care, as aqua regia is highly corrosive. It releases toxic fumes and is very dangerous if it comes in direct contact with human skin. How does aqua regia dissolve gold? Aqua regia is primarily popular for its ability to dissolve gold, palladium and platinum, all of which don’t react easily with chemicals. Aqua regia uses and applications Since aqua regia can completely dissolve gold, it’s used to produce chloroauric acid, which, in turn, is used as the electrolyte in a process for purifying the highest quality gold. Aqua regia is also used for metal etching and cleaning lab equipment (especially glassware of organic compounds). Aqua regia is an integral part of the extraction and purification processes of gold and platinum. Aqua regia and its World War 2 story Back in 1940, when Hitler-led Germany invaded Denmark, Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the Nobel Prize gold medals of Max von Laue and James Franck in aqua regia to keep them safe from the Nazi troops who were ransacking the chemistry lab at the Niels Bohr Institute.

Ok, so what do you do if you have gold that is 'contaminated' with other metals (iron, silver, lead, etc.), where you cannot mechanically seperate them first? If you add the 'mixed metals' into Aqua Regia, you end up with impure Chloroauric Acid. If you add Sodium metabisulfite, you will precipitate more than just gold. If you preface your work by 'soaking' the mixed metals in a 10M Nitric Acid, you MIGHT get the metal purified better before making your Chloroauric Acid to start with. My question for you is, what metals DO precipitate from impure Chloroauric Acid when you add the Sodium Metabisulfite, assuming a mix in equal quantity of gold, silver (assuming amalgams of mercury also are present), tin, lead, antimony, selenium and gallium?

No need to neutralize anything, just label it properly and take it to your local landfill and or hazmat facility and they take it and do the dirty work.

I watched on where they dipped in cpu boards and with in 15 to 30 sec, the gold was off. No electrolysis applied in action. The smb will have a more active reaction (foaming and boiling) if you don't neutralize first with urea, but it makes no difference in the quality of the end product.

Inquart gold with silver until the gold is 25% or less. smelt, dribble alloy into water to increase surface area, remove and dry. Place in a glass beaker, Add nitric acid to remove silver and copper from alloy leaving gold (and possible lead in alloy) *the gas produced by reacting nitric acid is dangerous to breath, commonly referred to as red death, you have been warned*, the silver/copper will be carried away by the nitric acid rinse. Keep this as you can recover the Silver form this later by adding a copper sheet to the silver solution to release the silver. Once the gold alloy stops reacting with nitric acid after several rinses, then you can begin the Aqua Regia treatment, use as little nitric acid as possible to dissolve the gold by adding it slowly to the HCL/AU mixture. The gold will slowly begin to dissolve into the HCL, once it is all in solution add a few millilitres of Sulfuric Acid to cause any lead in solution to precipitate out as lead sulfides which can then be filtered out of solution. Then you can begin to precipitate the Gold out of your final product using Sodium MetaBisulfate. You can check to see if you have removed all the gold from solution by using StannousChloride on a sample drawn from the solution. Properly neutralize all acids and dispose properly depending upon your region.
