@@AscendedEmperor It's an weird one similar to the Clones in star wars. Jr is considered a separate entity to king piccolo but carries the same look, style, and goals at least at first. He's technically 4-5 years old in the tourney and like 10 during hte sayian saga. But mature and experience enough to fight like an adult, he IS an adult. Besides for all we know warrior clan nameks probably grow fast in order to defend the village.

Toriyamas writing genius is on full display with Gokus role as a father. He wrote Goku as an imperfect father since there's no such thing as a perfect father.

Same could be said of anybody, mothers included. No one has THE absolute best way. Evidence in Chi Chi, her way was to coddle Gohan. Only with Goten did she become lax.

Not saying Chi-Chi is a bad mother but she definitely wasn't coddling him, it was more about what he can do academically so he gets a good job. She was pushing Gohan even more that way than Goku ever did from the training side if you think about it.

Goku may not be the best father, but he is not a bad father. He cares about both of his sons Gohan and Goten, and has even died for Gohan twice. Not to mention that Goku has saved Gohan's life multiple times, even more than Piccolo did. Even the dragonball super anime had Goku get a rage boost over Goku Black killing Chichi and Goten, even if they were from an alternate timeline. The typical response of a good father is getting angry over the death of their child. This is what even led to Vegeta being a better father to Trunks. The "giving Cell a senzu bean" moment is somewhat a sign of Goku's faith in Gohan, but his real failure as a father is not understanding that Gohan doesn't want to be a fighter like Goku. I see this as Goku making a mistake as a father, but Goku tried to make up for this mistake by trying to get a senzu bean so that he could get back into the fight and save Gohan, even though Goku himself was not strong enough to defeat Cell. I don't even think that Goku leaving at the end of Z is a sign of him being a bad father. Gohan is an adult with a child of his own, while Goten is almost an adult. At that point, Gohan and Goten didn't need Goku around as much. Even though Goku left with Uub, he planned to visit while training Uub, and was going to come back when he was finished. Overall, I think Goku is a better father than people give him credit for.

The biggest thing people point to is the way Goku handled Cell but even that was a proud Sayain dad moment. When Vegeta fought Cell he knew Trunks could beat him, but he wanted that glory for himself. Even before Goku fought Cell he knew for a fact Gohan could win and basically gave Cell a Senzu bean as a way of saying:”Tough luck buddy cus even at full strength your still getting your ass whooped by my boy” And again, another thing people like bringing up is how Goku didn’t know Gohan hated fighting. But when would he have learned that? Every time he saw Gohan after he came back Gohan was constantly volunteering himself to save the day and get into these fights. He may not have been excited for the fight itself but he always wanted to help his friends save the world and protect them. The only reason Piccolo knew otherwise was because he saw Gohan build himself from the ground up as someone who hated fighting to someone who accepted it as something he had to do.

So true. And I'm glad you brought up Gohan volunteering to help save the world and the universe at large. He might've been a child, but Gohan has clearly shown that he can speak for himself and make his own decisions, and let's face it. Gohan stepping up to the plate has often helped saved the day. We also have to remember that until the Cell games, everytime they were on the battlefield together, Goku makes sure to bench his son Gohan or send him away altogether to keep him safe, especially if he knows the villain of the week is too much for him. While I can totally get the argument that Goku was wrong and he had recklessly endangered his son Gohan, but he simply made a mistake with his son. And no parent is perfect. Besides he more than made up for said mistake with his heroic sacrifice and the fact that he allowed Gohan to be his own person, especially after he grew up. 😊

Goku being a bad father is one of the worst jokes to ever be taken seriously and has done some unnecessary damage to the character of Goku in certain people's eyes so I'm really glad this video came out

Goku is not the perfect dad, he has his flaws. But he is not the terrible one the fandom has made him out to be for so long. The first thing we see of him as a dad is literally give his own life to save Gohan. He dies care about his sons. It's about time this gets put to rest.

I'm glad you tackled this topic because it was really getting out of hand. I don't at all believe Goku was a bad dad. I didn't even have a real father figure for most of my life, but Goku definitely cares about and loves his son and Gohan loves his dad too.

The reunion was actualy anime filler surprisingly, in the manga Goku just sees Goten and says ''Huh? you must be my son you are just like me" I have seen some people saying this as a example of Goku beign a bad father but i think Akira just didnt put much thought into it as their goodbye scene is also pretty heartwarming in the manga

I don't think he is. You can clearly tell he loves his family. He just does things different do to how he grew up/lived in the wild with and without Grandpa Gohan. One other thing I see Piccolo as more of an older brother since hes not much older than him.

When in it doesn’t, and goku loves his family akin to close friends but it seems that it difficult for a lot to comprehend, then the slide the he grew up different cuz it’s anime but piccolo is a obviously grown adult but people don’t want apply that same logic when he’s a different race and the grow differently. Goku ain’t a great dad but people finna stay coping like they’re gonna lose sleep over that revelation or maybe they lack a father as great as they wank goku 💀

Not only that but look at it like this, goku got to yardrat after a death battle with a guy who killed his best friend and to his knowledge piccolo and that same guy was gonna go to earth and blow it up, goku BARELY survived against him and got lucky with super sayain. So its not far fetch goku stayed to learn these moves on yardrat BECAUSE he needed to up his arsenal of moves if he was to win against a stronger frieza. This isnt far fetched because goku stayed dead to stop the threats and goku let gotanks fight buu because he didnt want to keep saving earth because as he stated he wouldn't always be there to save the day and we see this in super hero.

​@@silis4645 That's also why he went to train Uub at the end of Z. He wanted new guardians of Earth. People able to be there when he wasn't around. I mean, look at DBS Super Hero. This is the exact scenario he was referring to. Neither he nor Vegeta were there to save the day, but Piccolo, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks were able to handle it without massive repercussions. Even in GT, you see what kind of fighter Uub can be with Goku's training. I'm aware that GT is not part of the main continuity, but it does show that he would be an enormous asset to Earth's defense. Most especially after the reveal of Uub having God ki. That could create enormous potential for him if he's ever featured in a future arc.

@@Cloud-dt6xb No to mention that instant transmission is one of the most useful techniques he ever learned. Without it, Cell would have killed everyone on Earth with his bomb. He uses it more than that, but that's just one example of it saving everyone's lives. So, if that was the single, solitary time Goku used it, it has already proven worth learning. Plus, if no one was able to fix his ship, he could've used it to get home. There's just too many positives to him staying on Yardrat to make it sound like a bad decision.

Goku is simply trying to make up for the Saiyan heritage Frieza stole from him. Vegeta is the opposite, although Frieza stole his father and a proper life, and after his death on Namek, Vegeta decided there was more to his life than being a Saiyan, despite proudly proclaiming his heritage. Look at the way Goku trained Gohan against Cell, as opposed to Vegeta. Vegeta never did that to Trunks.

For Yardrat, an argument could be made that he wanted to learn IT because has nearly been too late to save Gohan twice at thay point and wanted to learn something to ensure he wouldn't be late for future fights

hes not a great father in terms of the traditional parent role but he encourages his kids, are fine with there life choices, spends quality time( yes even training is especially for sayains good bonding) whenever hes around, has and will sacrifice himself for them, and most important i think is gohan and goten and even pan in gt look up and want to be like him in a lot of ways so is goku the best dad? no is a he a good though? absolutely

That’s true, he may not be a good father in terms of how we all usually see a good father, but he’s done a lot of things that doesn’t qualify him to be the “absolute worst” since there’s a lot of circumstances that happens throughout the series.

The reason I feel like people don’t bring up the Goku not checking up on his family in the 7 years he was dead is because the people that say Goku is a bad father have only watched DBZA, looked at memes or just watched clips. They don’t know the actual story.

Goku is not a bad father he is just unorthodox compared to a realife one..remember he is a hyper powerful alien from a race that were warriors that were not that close to there own individual families much because of separation on planetary missions....If anything Gokus ways as a father compared to the other sayians make Goku look like a stand up man lol.

I wouldn't even go that far. It's only by today's softened standards is he considered bad. It's a spit in the face of all the fathers who've went to combat to protect their land, all the father's who've passed down their knowledge and skills to the best of their ability, to all the father's who spent all of the time they realistically could with their children while in pursuit of their own betterment(which the entire universe benefits from in Goku's case)... I just cant see what standard is being used here besides this modern fantastical one.

He's a good person for sure. An absente father mostly but he truly loves his sons and is such a cute granpa to Pan

I just finished watching and this was a very good and important video and Im glad people now have a much needed explanation of this highly "debated" topic. I too find it crazy at times that people think Goku is a bad father because the majority who think that way know nothing of his character's journey in Dragon Ball; a significant influence on Goku's character is his Grandfather, from whom he inherited his kindness from and learned his foundations as a martial artist. And along the way, we see Goku as a fundamental Good person who also likes to train and fights for self-improvement or to avenge his fallen friends. This upbringing made Gohan the well-spoken man he is, along with Chi Chi, who let him find his interests which led him to a path as a scholar. Goku always believed in his son and knew he had alot of potential which is why when the idea of training in the room of spirit and time came he clearly states that he will train as hard as he can, fight cell and if that doesnt work hed give up because this was the time he started planning on getting Gohan to train and be his trump card incase his hypothetical scynario came to fruition which is why he had his confidence on Gohan in the cell games where everyone at that point looked at Gohan as a whimp so to speak and knew he couldn't get it done for example Gohan's cowardly ness against Nappa while Piccolo and Kurirn performed their combo attack which Gohan failed to finish and Vegeta was there and later on in the frieza saga he was less of a whimp and was much stromger but his power wasnt enough and now cell at his perfect form who was way ahead of even Goku was something everyone looked at as a very stupid idea to send a kid to fight someone they themselves couldn't beat let alone Goku who trained WITH Gohan. But Goku didn't care, and when he gave Cell the Senzu, he was showing his sort of good sportsmen ship to Cell and gave him a Senzu so that he'd not have an excuse later on. Unfortunately, people will never want to understand why Goku did what he did when laying the groundwork for his comrades and the audience to see why he had this confidence level in Gohan. As a martial artist, this was his big debut fighting a villain at their peak from start to finish without anyone's aid like Goku did when fighting Frieza. The only difference here is that back as a kid, when Goku trained under Roshi, he explained the concepts of Budō and why as a Taoist martial artist, one must train for self-improvement, not to show off and to finish off a great evil with one mighty blow instead of making them suffer. Goku perfectly executed this, but Gohan got arrogant and saw his father get caught up in the crossfire.

It's like saying the father who has to be away for travels as a soldier is a bad father, or if he has to spend his time away from home to make money for food on the table, even despite how good they are with each other when he IS around. Goku did the best he could with what he had under very unreasonable circumstances, and places a tremendous amount of faith in his family. Although one could make an argument that he wants to go away to Beerus's planet too often now, just 'cause that's his form of fun. Goku since he was a child has always been a crazy moron, but he has also been supremely empathetic and compassionate towards the plight of others, it's not just about fighting but about defending the weak and innocent with him, and of course that would extend to his own children

Android 8? Making sure to fight Majin Vegeta away from the martial arts tournament spectators? Sparing Vegeta? Sparing even Frieza? Giving up the thrill of battle and training to work with his former enemy and sacrifice himself to take out Raditz one way or another? These are the moments I'm thinking of, I don't know what you're thinking. Anytime innocent life is lost, that is what really sets Goku off and it's no longer play time

Toriyama once joked that he quit the manga because he lost his favorite pen... pretty sure he was joking with the father statement. What counts as a good father is a culturally subjective anyway. What I am more interested in is vegeta's final explosion being treated as a big deal.... he literally traumatized his kid, while goku's supposedly perma-death was cause by Gohan's arrogance. The fandom leaning towards vegeta confuses me. Vegeta is toxic af.

Oh, hot topic question. Well, I think we have to take everything into consideration that happened in the Room Of Spirit And Time. During the Cell arc. I think, that period showed most and best of what a loving and caring father Goku is at least for Gohan....

He just wanted to keep fighting that one time, right before he reached Super Saiyan for the very first time, even though Goku was COMPLETELY exhausted. Sure, that's the spirit of someone who doesn't like to fight........ Or.... Maybe, you're misinterpreting things. There was a lot more nuance to Gohan and Goku than you give them credit for, which is why I kinda don't even wanna argue with you. I just have to find a way to explain to you how stupid your argument was. You just brought up one very specific point and put it into the wrong context to fit your argument. That's kind of what we call "strawmanning". Those are NOT strong arguments and you should not rely on those. Sure Gohan likes to fight. He's half Saiyan and beat Cell after all. He just doesn't enjoy it as much as his father. But you call that a point to claim that Goku is a bad father? That he has some differences to his son? Dude, you don't have to make your kids be EXACTLY like yourself. Have you had kids? Every kid is different. And that's GOOD. They're allowed to have differences and nuances. And you don't always have to respect all of that as a parent. Doesn't automatically make you a "bad" parent, when you don't know everything about your kid and fulfil their every wish and so on. A lot of people also misunderstood the whole senzu beam thing during the cell saga. Gohan even states himself that he understood why his dad chose him to fight, Gohan knowing himself realize that whenever he gets angry he can tap into his hidden potential which is why cell really started beating on Gohan.

The whole thing ended with Gohan getting stronger and it only costs Andriod 16 and Goku’s life. The former was fixable with the dragon balls (although it still hasn’t happened yet) and the latter was technically Gohan’s fault for not finishing off Cell. I generally hate how people ignore all of this just to continue the meme of Goku being a bad father.

You know there was a part of me that always thought Raditz coming to earth and kidnapping Gohan and Goku not being able to stop him or save him (prior to him and piccolo winning) really triggered something in him (almost traumatizing him) I feel like once this happened it flipped a switch as to where Goku would never let that happen again and where Goku now trains to the ridiculous extent he does. Yes I know it’s always been part of his character and his sayain dna but I also think in some part of himself he wants to be sure he’ll always be ready and prepared to protect his loved ones and pushes himself to achieve this as well. Just my thoughts though

I dont think Goku could check on Goten because he was dead, i dont really remember why baba brough him to Earth, but i do remember her stating that ´´you have a day, and im gonna do this only this time because you helped us`` or whatever im pretty sure she mentioned something like that. there was a reason as to why he couldnt just show up and say hi to goten. so Goku being able to even show up on the tournament was a special occurrence. i think even in the bojeck movie (i know it isnt cannon) Goku wanted to help Gohan and the kai was like ´´You cant help him`` or whatever. Even Vegeta going against super buu was because they needed his help to beat him. So there is a special rule that dont allow dead people coming back to the living world My point is. there is a rule that Goku cant simply go to the living world.

I think at the end, in regards to Goku not checking in on his family, I think that was intentional. He knew he had to make a choice not to return, and didn’t want to feel compelled to go back on his decision. He truly thought staying dead would have kept the earth, and his family, safe. I think to be honest, the best dads are the ones that do screw up, but because they care too much. Nobody is given a infallible guidebook to parenting when they become a dad, they have to wing it. As long as they don’t abuse or selfishly abandon their family and try to keep his family’s best interests in mind, a dad is doing his job.

Blame TeamFourTeam for over-popularizing the Goku is a bad dad/Piccolo is Gohan's dad meme.

6:16 I always looked at that moment in a different light. When I saw the expression on Gohan's face, when his eyes widened up seeing Piccolo get hurt, I never saw it as him getting completely and soley angry and unlocking Beast. When I looked at Gohan's face, I saw a *father* who got confirmation that his world was about to end, because the only thing that he thought was strong enough to protect it, just got blasted out of the sky. Thinking that if he didn't step up, his actual family was going to die. He would have to let them down and watch them die, and explain to his loved ones that they are all dead because he couldn't make the cut. More of a fear and anxiety kind of reaction, instead of an anger thing. Anxiety and fear breed anger, and the anger was a byproduct of some sort of PTSD. And if you look at it in that light, the writing becomes a lot better. People have to understand that the love and compassion you feel as a father is different than as a friend, many married couples who give birth often describe the love that they feel for their child and family as a different kind of love than others. People have to understand that Gohan is now a grown-ass man, and a father, and a protector of his home and friends. He's not a kid anymore, and he's not a warrior, he's a dad. I think the writing in the movie is fine for a character like present-day Gohan.

As a father of three boys myself and the son of a present, good father. The quantity of time goku got with his boys wasnt a lot but the quality of time spent was immense. Memories are only saved in our brain with some kind of emotional stimulation attached to them. Which saves them in the long term memory bank. All his time with his boys he spent teaching them lessons and how to protect people they love. Also he saved earth multivle times. Hell goku is all our daddys at that point

I don't think Goku gave Cell the senzu to "prove a point", I think he legitimately thought Gohan would not be able to defeat Cell unless he unlocked his full potential, and that that wouldn't happen unless Cell was an overwhelming threat to him. He was putting Gohan in danger as a means of breaking his limits, which was the exact thing he did to get Gohan to unlock ssj in the first place. He just misread gohan's character and didn't realize he freezes up just as much as he breaks his limits.

Goku is nowhere near a bad father. Questionable decisions sometimes, sure but definitely not a bad father.

if people analysed all the events that lead to son goku's death, you can definitely see that he is not a bad father. he always died trying to save the humanity - which includes his own family! there was one scene where vegeta critised his decision to save mr.satan and the dog over their children, but that was due to his children being far away and he didn't have enough time to get them after saving mr.satan. and goku was obviously very sad that upset that his sons were sacrificed initially if you look at his facial expressions, and the fact that he does not come up with a single excuse when vegeta confronts him. for someone who was raised alone or without any parents for majority of his childhood, he tries to keep his son and wife happy. remember, he tries. he is someone who wants to just train all day, but he farms and stays at home so that chi chi won't be upset. he doesn't push his son to pursue martial arts minus the times that his power was needed, and is happy for his son becoming a scholar. remember during cell saga that he even promised his son to spend some time fishing after all of this mess is gone? sure, he made mistakes here and there but i have seen real life father won't don't even do half as good as he does. remember that he comes from a race of aliens that does not take parenting as seriously as earthlings do.

I think Goku’s biggest weakness as a father has been emotional availability, but even with that he’s shown the capacity for it like in the room of spirit and time.

A much more understanding father than Vegeta, that's for sure, and yet nobody ever seems to have so much to say about Vegeta's hilarious awfulness in the fatherhood department. I would even say Trunks had the same sort of anger potential Gohan did, it's just that Vegeta's training/parenting methods sent Trunks in the wrong direction to fully tap into his potential, wasting it all on super saiyan grade 3. Vegeta's method has always been overexertion and tryhard stubbornness and need to dominate and stay #1, while Goku has always had strength in his flexibility and compassion for the weak and WANTS others to be stronger than him

Gohan's a grown ass man, he doesn't need custody. But you'll be wrong either way.

He got killed protecting Gohan twice.. And came back. My dad never even came back from getting milk.

Piccolo has always been more like a fatherly uncle. An uncle can be a father figure, just as much as the actual father. My brother, for example, is my nephew's second father figure. He took him to sleep as a kid and spent a lot time playing with him as a kid and and teaching him a LOT of wisdom and giving him a lot of advice.

Also the whole Gokuu not coming home right away after Namek explodes and staying on Yardrat, I always assumed that it was also partially because he had just transformed into a Super Saiyan for the first time and wanted to get that under control before coming home in so he doesn’t accidentally lose his shit at home, transform and hurt somebody. He says to Gohan right after he transforms the first time that Gohan needs to leave while he still has a “shred of reason left”, so it makes sense that he’d want to get a handle on that before potentially putting his friends and family in danger because he can’t control his new powers yet. Gokuu tells Trunks it took him some time to get it under control, so it makes sense. Sure the manga doesn’t spell it out and this is my own head canon here, but it’s actually logical for Gokuu’s character (especially because he stays dead in the Cell arc for very similar reasons, to protect his friends and family).

Goku has always cared for his Family, from prior to the Saiyan Saga he has been living a Happy Life and just started becoming a protective Father towards Gohan, even at the time Raditz showed up and Died trying to protect him, not to mention that you have to keep in Mind that it was Piccolo's Idea of turnning Gohan into a Fighter, so that's why he literally kidnapped Gohan by leaving him alone and was forced to survive in the Wilderness, so that is why Gohan's whole Childhood was Sacrificed, Piccolo at the Time was still under the Evil Influence of his Father Demon King Piccolo (before he merged back with Kami), In the Namek Saga where Goku 1st transforms into a Super Saiyan when facing off against Frieza, he immediately tells Gohan to leave along with Piccolo to go to his Ship safely and escape the Planet that's about to Explode, Goku may have done a Bold Move on giving Cell a Senzu Bean but he did that to push Gohan further to transform him into reaching Super Saiyan 2, if only he should've finished off Cell if he hadn't let his Pride get the hold of him, In Conclusion, Goku is not a Terrible Father, he has always cared for his 2 Children like a Good Father he really is.

Additionally in the time period that Dragonball Super takes place, Goku had time to bond with his youngest child. Especially, as a grandfather he learned from his oldest son and piccolo on how to better show some care for his grandchild. Other things to note he knows he wouldn't win tho would be any argument with chichi about training Goten when Chi-Chi wants Goten to have an education, but we all know likely he wants Goten to have some balance especially if Goten loves to fight like his father.

I think why Goku didn't contact anyone when he was dead after the cell game, must been because he was what everyone was thought permanently dead and the people who is dead should probably have none connecting to the living world at all. It only was okay for the first time because they knew Goku would be revived in one year, or a special case for one day with help of Uranai Baba.

Goku has always been best dad in the entire series for me personally! I absolutely love and adore how much he cares for his family, also Goku and Goten relationship is something I only wish Bardock and Goku had 😌

As previously mentioned, Goku doesn't really grow up-- at least not mentally. Because he is still so young seeming and immature, he does come off a little shortsighted. And because of this, many viewers think he's too dumb to be a good dad. At one point in Dragon Ball Super, Goku even alludes to not knowing what a kiss is. This is extremely suspicious and concerning as he has children. The "Goku is too stupid" argument isn't necessarily wrong, but it does feel a little mean. His level of intelligence isn't really related to how good of a dad he is, or how much he loves his sons. For most of these points, whether Goku is an adequate father or not will come down to interpretation. On one hand, he does seem incredibly absent and doesn't spend much typical bonding time with his children, and he is very childish himself. On the other, he's also a very dedicated person and puts everything on the line so his family is safe.

Tbh before Super I don’t think there was really that much evidence that Goku didn’t develop mentally. He definitely continues to be playful, lighthearted, and somewhat naive, but Goku in the Cell and Buu sagas is way more mature than he was as a child. Of course, Super is kind of cannon (I say kind of because the anime and manga continuities differ), I’m just saying that up until that point Goku clearly matured linearly.

"Goku is a bad father" and "Piccolo is Gohan's real dad" are some of the funniest parts of DBZA IMO, whether or not they are true to the original series. The reason why they caught on as fan theories is because there is some truth to it; Goku does some things that you wouldn't want your own dad doing to you e.g. sending you to fight a killer biomechanical monster, and Piccolo is a mentor and an uncle-figure to Gohan. People just like to take theories too far, and it helps that a lot of people don't like Goku and like Piccolo. TFS didn't make those theories up, they just exaggerated them in the show for comedy

mostly off topic but I wanted to know your thoughts, I grew up watching DBO - DBS and since the saiyan saga I always thought it would be cool if they did a prequel about grampa gohan and master roshi before they met goku and were both still in their prime really bringing back the martial arts side of things and the creation of ki blasts like the moment roshi learn the kamehameha and other early style skills like the containment spell with it eventually ending with goku arrival ...Do you think the creators of the manga and show would ever do this in dragon ball?

One major thing i thought you would have brought up is Team Four Star because i feel that's where a lot of misinformed people actually take it seriously. Maybe they over did it with goku being a bad father there and piccolo being Gohan's Dad. One thing i never thought about was the point on Goten that you brought up in your video! Also, the scene of Goten hugging Goku in the anime is just there as he really does so when he's about to leave to return to the after life after teaching them fusion. That's something i never noticed was added till Lance aka MistereFusion pointed out.

TFS changed basically all of the characters in the show to some degree, either exaggerating existing traits of the characters or making up new ones, for the sake of comedy. Yet people don't think that Dende is a tsundere with a crush on Gohan, that Kami is a pothead who lives in Piccolo's head with Nale, or that Popo is an omnipotent and cruel monster. Some people might have got the idea that Goku is a bad father and Piccolo is Gohan's real dad from TFS, but the reason it caught on is because there is at least some material in the actual show supporting it. Goku not being an ideal father and Piccolo's close mentor/parentlike relationship with Gohan fall into the category of existing things in the actual show that were exaggerated, that's why those theories caught on, not because TFS made them up

The thumbnail of Goku punching Gohan in the face made me LOL. I know its from the Cell saga when Gohan was weak before the time chamber and he was acting irrational at Piccolo being hurt but it still made me laugh. lmao

Geekdom!!!!!!! As a father by myself, I feel, in my opinion, it’s his subconscious militant mindset. Some of us have it, he has an abundance. Some of us are more enthusiastic with it, he just gets it done. I’m sorry if I didn’t explain it properly, but that’s my take on it.

You could see the Yardrat excursion as him trying to stay off planet and keep earth safe, similar reasoning to his choice post Cell. I think the issue with the senzu bean is really nice. Sometimes a push, a leap of faith is necessary, but when the stakes are that high…maybe not the moment for it. The piccolo v goku argument is interesting, kind of like the helicopter parent debate. Goku is a middling father. He’s good, he’s distant. Parents see a lot in their kids and I think in that situation it makes sense.

It isn't FAIR to compare Goku to fathers by Earth standards since he's a FREAKING alien with Alien instincts (battle hungry) But I think he isn't the *worst* father, he's just dumb but a loving Father. He's definitely the best Saiyan Father (besides Vegeta, since Vegeta's more patient and protective, towards Bulla) Saiyans have pride, expect their children to be strong (if Tarble is canon it would further prove that the weak children are outcast) Fact that he's EXTREMELY patient and supportive, and even tough enough to say his child/children are (potentially) stronger than him says a lot (compare that towards how Vegeta treated Trunks in the Cell Saga, I would assume that's how Saiyans treat their children too)

Even before that he is different. When OG DB started out he was living basically as a feral child in the wilderness with only the brief time with a father figure (Grandpa Gohan) as a tie to the "civilized world" until he dies and he lives like a hunter/gatherer. The Saiyan aspect and space alien warrior nonsense was an add on to expand for future stories. He lived his most formative years living in the wild. He was so ignorant of what we consider common sense that he couldn't tell if someone wasn't male of female so he'd physically pat their crotch to figure out what was there. He isn't the traditional father because he only had a brief conceptualization of a father figure. The only other concept he has for a father figure is a martial arts master as his master which is still fairly different from traditional fathers.

And DBS right after Whis made Bulma give birth to Bulla (before the tournament of power) when Trunks and Goten tried to carry Bulla he snapped at them and hesitated carrying her (episode 97??? Somewhere between 90 and 104, before Frieza was recruited) It's in the manga too but only in 1 quick panel This is a dumb comparison but it makes sense. Kratos (God of War) LOVED his daughter, Fathers (Should Ideally) love their daughters differently than their sons. Kratos treated Atrais/Loki tough, and it's explained he was always tough on him to Toughen him up. Spartans (Who are warriors LIKE SAIYANS) always made their SONS fight and survive. He treated his son just as he was treated. But he did this because he wanted Atrais/Loki to be able to fend for himself since Kratos (in God of War Ragnarok) admitted he was getting too old, he wants his son to be able to survive and know how to live on his own. Much like Vegeta did with Trunks (debatable but I mean tough love for sons so they aren't dependant and weak, sons eventually become men, and it's a Father's role to make their sons into Strong Men)

@@williebelcher9303. Yea the people who say goku is a bad father forgets that vegeta was a piece of shit father when future trunks just wanted to get to know him but people wanna say that goku is a bad father and that piccolo is a better

If Gohan thought that Goku was a bad father he wouldn't let go to spend so much time with his daughter

18:02, I wonder if this was what my own literal father was doing when HE was watching the same scenes as I was when looking at this particular part of DBZ. Putting himself in Son Goku's shoes. I'm saying this because my dad's himself a Dragon Ball fan, and he didn't even grow up watching it and is often an old school guy because of what he did grow up on. And this is one of the moments he talks about in regards to why he likes Son Gohan, who just so happens to be his favorite character, or at least one of them. Specifically, Dad always points to that scene in praise, even pointing out how Goku was all "See! I told you" from the moment Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2.

Vegeta is a more devoted family man than Goku.

If Goku was a bad father then why did he save Gohan as a kid during the cell games filler. And when he uses his instant transmission right before cell is about to blow up. Why did Gohan cries out for his father? That shows Gohan loves him and doesn't make Goku a bad father in my opinion

Goku died for his kid *twice* I think he’s a good father not the best But he’s not this demon the fandom paints him as.

I would say this. Goku may not be the BEST dad but he's not a bad one either. Even though he does go out and train to get stronger and all that, he still tries to protect his family at the same time, and he does care about them, otherwise, he wouldn't have snapped at Zamasu when he killed "FUTURE" Chi-Chi and "FUTURE" Goten, btw.

This happened because Chi-Chi made Goku keep his promise in Dragon Ball.

I was just watching a pool game between Franco Escamilla, Mario Castañeda and Rene Garcia. They were mainly talking about how they were the first generation of dubbers that became superstars because of their roles as Son Goku and Prince Vegeta. I know it doesn't have anything to do with this topic but it was cool to segway into this video.

To your point about Goku checking up on Chi Chi, Gohan and Goten from the after life, I feel like we have to add a shred of realism to this situation. He wasn’t supposed to be coming back. Maintaining contact and establishing a relationship with a son you may never meet is kinda…dark. Realistically, him saying he wasn’t coming back meant it was time to let go. For good.
