The Kata is called Gojushiho- Dai in SKIF, it is not wrong. It depends on what organization you train with. I spent ten years training full time in Japan and know Kanazawa Hirokazu Soke personally, without doubt he is the number one senior Master of Shotokan alive today and his knowledge is immense.

To all those who are confused with the Dai and Sho switch, in the Shotokan International Federation under Kanazawa, Koncho this form is designated as Dai. In the JKA they would call is Sho, this Sensei is with the SKIF organization so he should demonstrate it as Dai, if he did not he would not be following the curriculum of this organization. I hope this answers all the confusion of JKA & SKIF - Dai and Sho forms. The Why part of the questions should be asked of Kanazawa himself, if one really finds this interesting, or just practice your organizations Dai and Sho interpretations and follow your path to excellence.

@@talaniel They're brain dead. It's written at the beginning, he says it out loud, and anyone who's been doing Shotokan for more than six months knows about the Dai and Sho version of Gojushiho being the other way round for some folks.

Gojūshiho Shō and Gojūshiho Dai are two versions in Shotokan of the Shōrin-ryū kata called Useishi (54) or Gojūshiho. The oft-repeated story about the JKA having to rename the Gojushiho kata due to a tournament mix-up; and Kanazawa Hirokazu, because of his seniority, keeping the original names in his SKIF organisation is without foundation. In fact, Kanazawa is on record [1]as saying that when he formed SKIF he changed the names of the two kata as he felt that the “sho” designation suited the smaller, more difficult, kata better. Kanazawa also mentioned that this kata was introduced into the JKA before its sibling, and this explained why the JKA decided to call it “dai” when they introduced the second Gojushiho into the syllabus.

Big 54 Steps (Gojushiho Dai). Many styles of Shorin Ryu (like Matsubayashi) just simply call it Gojushiho. Shotokan's Gojushiho Sho is somewhat similar to the Kobayashi Shorinkan version (though there is a technique similar to the Matsubayashi version).

This is what I have been informed by my sensei's when discussing the difference in naming. "It was called out incorrectly on first performance & the JKA did not correct it to "save face", when Soke kanazawa broke away he went back to the original convention."

johnny lonergan Its Sho in every other Organization as well... Also this Kata exists way longer than the JKA or even Shotokan itself Otherwise it would be Goju-yon ho instead of shi ho just like the modern Heian/Pinan Yondan in which the new term Yon is used for the number four instead of shi. So the name most likely reaches back way further though it still can be true as there is no real knowledge when the two Katas where melted thoghter for the first time and therefore had to be called dai and sho but i think both of them exist in Shorin-Ryu as well

+max krause there's actually a confusion on which is dai and which is sho. this one is originally dai. The name change seems to have happened sometime in the 1960s or 1970s when a high-ranking JKA instructor announced 'Gojūshiho Dai' and then performed Gojūshiho Shō at the All-Japan Karate Championships. Due to his high rank, nobody dared question him about this hence why all Shotokan Karate Schools who Originate from the JKA use the reversed names. but Kanazawa sensei refused to change the original names, and then, schools originating from SKIF still use the original names. because of that, either name you use is actually right, it mosty depends on the origins of your school.

Imagine having to call a kata by the wrong name just to save face for your head instructor. Even the school Kanazawa came from (JKA) calls it Dai. This is a classic example of the sheep mentality of those studying Japanese karate.
