The Gift of Guilt is the guilt we inherit from our ancestors, we learn from their mistakes and become better people for it. In the same way that the sins of our past, things like wars, crusades, slavery, etc. has given us the wisdom to realize how bad these things are Gojira, being very conscious of current trends, is also pointing out that the environmental destruction we've cause is another atrocity that future generations will have to learn from.

I've thought about this a while because it's an interesting song, and I believe that Vin was almost there, and then your idea is quite interesting too (or course, all this depends on interpretation), but to me the key word is "gift", which means is given to us freely without us having to have done anything wrong. It would feel like you describe to me if they didn't talk about leaving it behind, getting rid of it, that serves no purpose, the idea of how we materialize lies into the almost palpable feel of guilt. I think is the imposed idea of being sinners just by being born, making us feel undeservedly guilty about things completely out of our control, and freeing ourselves from that idea.

I'll echo what someone else already said. The live version from Brixton is incredible, as is Flying Whales, Heaviest Matter etc etc. That Brixton show is outstanding, both because of the performances themselves, and because the sound mixing is A+. A giant wall of sound that's so pleasing to the ear. Definitely you should check it out. Gojira are one of those rare bands that are even better live than on the record imo. I've seen them in person and they blow most bands away in a live setting. The scream on the word 'guilt' at the end of this song on the live version, is bone tingling. It makes you feel Joe's emotions while he sings it. This band gives me life. They do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Great reaction as usual \m/

This is my favourite track from L’Enfant Sauvage. That melody, that chorus. It’s sublime. I got to see them live while they were touring off this album and this song was the closer. Perfect way to end the show. The times I’ve seen them after that show the set list hasn’t featured much from this album (I think I got the title track but that’s all I can recall) which is a bit disappointing. I think L’Enfant as an album is a bit underrated considering how highly regarded From Mars and The Way Of All Flesh are.

This is such a great song. The whole album is astounding. I loved the discussion on guilt and what it does to a person. Guilt is a great motivator for change and in a lot of ways it can be the most powerful emotion of all. Honestly, I don't understand how people can be irritated that you come from a background where you didn't really get exposed to music growing up, Sori. One of my favorite things is introducing people to new music that they fall in love with. It's a fun challenge trying to read people and figure out what they'll like the most. There are SO many bands I'd love for you to listen to. Seriously, I could probably take up an entire week of throwing bands your way. One of my favorite things about this channel is watching you react because you really FEEL the music. It's the same way I approach listening to music. Don't let the negative nancys get you down. Keep that exuberance and openness to new music! Much love as always! -Jason

I remember requesting this one back on I think, Flying Whales. And man. This song... Idc what its about. But it seems to portray the feeling of guilt. Like the music alone. Just the sound. The repeating alt tapping in the back, the feeling that repeats and repeats. Then the heavier chorus, where its those times that the guilt that feeling, just overwhelms you, and forces you into a ball on the floor. Also serving as your anger towards the feeling. And at the end of those song, that break, is you ending that... Every time i hear this song i get chills that have nothing to do with being cold. Loved the reaction guys! Vin seemed to feel it the same way i do. Just the epicness in the music itself. I cant help but follow the alt tapping with my fingers or aor drumming hahaha. This entire album is fucking world class to me. The best music i can think of. L'Enfant Sauvage. The title track. Is just purely awesome! Thats my vote for a next Gojira song!!!

If you enjoy the eccentricity of Gojira and want to expand your horizons when it comes to music that is very heavily influenced by their foreign elements and different cultures you have to try Sigur Rós (from Iceland), namely their song "Hoppípolla". L'enfant Sauvage means literally "The Wild Child" and refers to a 1970 French movie of the same name. It depicts a child who is raised alone in the forest and his struggles to adapt to human culture, language and interactions. Gojira's title-track from the album is directly related to that story, oh, btw, the movie is actually based on a real story, from a real child who lived in the forest for about 12 years. You guys check this movie out, it's pretty deep.

My interpretation of the lyrics was pretty much identical to Sori's, but Vin's perspective is really interesting to me. In the end, I think both views make sense and I'm glad that such drastically different interpretations can be drawn from the same lyrics. "L'enfant Sauvage" means "the wild child", with "wild" as in feral, rather than unruly.

Gojira - The Fall. It's not one of their top songs but I'd loveee to see you guys react to it. There's an insanely interesting part in the middle with some of the craziest lyrics in any Gojira song, I'd love to see your analysis of them! Loved this one by the way 👌

Vin is totally right with his interpretation. And guilt is indeed a guift because we need such emotional "nerves" to go through life. Also I had never thought of that line "We're left as starving orphans" as Vin interprets it. Parents make the world make sense for kids. The absence of trust in parents can be very damaging for that reason, I think

I'm blaming all the vids I've been lately watching of your channel for the funny dream I had last night. In my dream, some random dude asked me if I worshiped Satan. I laughed and told him that "when all is said and done, Lucifer and Yahweh will bow down before me!" So, at least I've got that going for me... which is nice! ;)

I've been listening to metal for a long time now, and Gojira is my fave band, since hearing them back in the early 2000s. Each of their albums has been great, but seem to stand out from each other. True to their sound.. yet somehow unique. It's rare these days for a band to put out great album after great album. I got to finally see them live a few years ago, and it was absolutely amazing. They weren't the headliner though. I'd love to go catch them in Europe where they're a lot bigger.. that's a bit of a pipe dream though. Anyways, I scour KZread for reaction videos for Gojira.. each video is almost like getting a chance to listen to them again for the first time. Thanks for that!!

Dude is very insightful. He hit it spot on. We build our self image through judgement and guilt becomes the trap that binds us from our full human potential.

As a conservation biologist, environmentalist and someone who works with these questions on a daily basis (environment agency), I'm with Sori on her interpretation - but again, this is the beauty of art, your experiences and frames of references will influence the interpretation of the message :) but again, doing what I do, Sori's interpretation makes total sense. I thought I'd offer some reflections that might help clarify how the environmental issues can come into it (now, of course, they might have had a completely different intent when writing the lyrics, but this is how I relate to it). I see the beginning as setting the scene, like when you are travelling by train or car and watch the landscape pass by, and you start thinking and contemplating life (as one does :) ). And as you watch nature pass by and you think about how our actions are affecting, changing and destroying more and more of it, you do feel pain. The way we in modern society live, and how we are currently basing our society and economies on constant growth is destructive. You cannot have infinite growth on ONE planet with finite resources, and we are trampling everything in our path to serve this "destructive intention that serves no purpose" other than the gratification of our desire to own more stuff - and it will be the end of us all. At the beginning of industrialisation, we didn't know any better, and we have been set on a path that is very hard for us who live in the present to break. Now that we know better, that we know the "sins" of our recent ancestors and our own, we have been given the gift of guilt, but even though we embrace this and suffer, we continue to destroy by simply maintaining our way of life. And we continue to add more and more people to this mix, under the assumption that magically, technological evolution will magically solve the problem of dwindling resources - despite what it means for all other non-human life on this planet. So many of us environmentalists in the modernised western society, do have a lot of guilt. We live in houses that are too big, drive too much, fly too much, eat too much meat, waste too much food, we have smartphones, and tablets, computers and gadgets, knowing full well that the mining of rare minerals required for all this is wreaking havoc on both environment and third world communities, but we are in a catch-22 where our society relies on access to all this technology to work, pay bills and function, but it will also be our undoing. Our soils, where we are growing our foods, are becoming degraded and depleted and there will, in the not very distant future, not be enough nutrient and minerals in the soil to grow crops (no, seriously, check out the International Panel on Biodiversity and Environmental Sustainability report published this year...), we are polluting our fresh water sources - the support system of human existence as we know it is dwindling and we are taking so many other species with us on our path to destruction. So yes, we will be left as starving orphans, the vital core gone. Evidence of our sins is available everywhere we turn. But it does become overwhelming. You cannot function in your daily life with all this hanging over you. So you have to forgive yourself for all the wrongs you are inevitably doing, which is based in love for your family, friends - you want what is best for them and for yourself, which is unfortunately often connected in materialism and over-consumption. Breaking the cycle is incredibly difficult, and we need to be able to forgive ourselves from failing to do so, but to keep trying nonetheless.

It's not about environment. When you're feeling guilt, that's a quality that makes you a better human being but at the same time is something that makes you suffer. So you evolve, leaving the 'gift' of guilt, behind.

I think the vital core is the heart that is gone after so much pain has destroyed it, and then the starving orphans like when you are left alone in life, and your starving for someone to fill the void
