The Marine Corps isn't built for the majority of it's first term enlistees to make a career out of itEspecially the Infantry. It's built for tough kids who want to prove something to themselves for a few years untilthey can get out and use their college money and Marine Corps transformation to figureout what they want to do with the rest of their lives. For some of those guys, it means reenlisting into another branch of the military for greater opportunitiesand more billets. In those cases, most of those transfers are still proud of their USMC service and creditit with giving them a good foundation when applying to the SOF of the other services. The Corps is built so that the lifers who really live eat and breath the Corps will reenlist and not have to competewith guys looking just to hold onto a job.If you want job security, join another branch of the service. If you want get a life time transformationthat will lead to success in what ever you wish to do in the civilian world, join the Corps.

blkyank1 I liked this... this makes so much sense. Thank you, I’ve been struggling with the choice between the corps and the army. I want to be a Marine and have since I was 8 years old. But all these people try and turn me away from it with all the negative stuff about the corps,

just finished up my 6 yr contract with the marine corps and leaving for the army next week, all the info he has given is true. Marines are a tough branch and will weed out those that don't "live the lifestyle" like the author said. it's highly competitive for promotions, jobs, and have higher standards than any branch. I was proud to earn the title 6 years ago and due to limited active duty spots for a E5 tanker I was able to find a active duty position in the army keeping my same job and rank. looking forward to becoming a soldier now

Jason, you were 100 percent on correct about everything you said regarding the marine corps, especially going beyond your 1st 4 years. I did not; I got out after I completed my 4 years. While I enjoyed my time serving with the Marines, I simply could not see myself reenlisting or spending 20 years with them. You have to be a certain type of person and think a certain way if you want to continue your career in the marine corps. Navy, army, airforce are better options for the majority of people.

So basically you are saying that Marine Corps are not for pussies. You are damn right!!!!!! Once a Marine always a marine and we have each others back for life. The Corps is a brotherhood earn with sweat and blood. we are not robots we think independently, but war is not an individual thing. You cannot be an individual when your have to have your brothers back. The Marine Corps are the first in war and last to leave. That is why we always train because the more you sweat in peace the less you bleed in war. If you want easy Go Army, Navy Air force. Promotions are not given they are earned, so when people see your stripes they know you are not a nobody. Army has two types of rank infantry rank and spec rank a Marine only has one rank you can be a cook to an aircraft mechanic but you are ready to do the job of a Marine infantry man. You want hard and be part of a special brotherhood Become a Marine.

I've served in both branches: the USMC is more cut throat- sometimes there's back stabbing due to lack of slots. That's why people who are sensitive won't make it long in the USMC. But there are Army units: some infantry, airborne and Ranger Regiment, that are just as competitive as the Marines.

If you can't think like a marine on a daily, you will not stay beyond your 1st contract. don't get me wrong, i am glad i served with the marine corps, it was a good 4 years for the most part. It's just the most difficult branch of service to do an entire 20 year committment.

USMC lowest retention rate--I agree with that 100%. When I worked as an Army Recruiter (detailed to the end, NOT a convert!) I put in 17 men and women prior service marines! they all served faithfully and honorably but in the end, wanted a military career but wanted nothing more to do with the USMC. they all said they were treated like children, were very restricted in what they could do in their off duty time and even in Hawaii, they were treated like they were deployed to another nation with a pass policy, etc. Just to go off base after work! Old school-like 1960's attitude-treatment of marines. One guy did nothing wrong, no UCMJ actions, nothing, had a good SPF code on his dd 214 but had a negative, "4" re-entry code! this made us do a waiver. turns out, he was given this code because he did not want to re-enlist in the USMC and made it known he was going to go Army. So they screwed him and he didn't know until he came to us. We got him in, but only after about a 3 month wait for a re-entry waiver. Plus, they are the only branch to f'ing charge you for your basic issue of uniforms! You do not get paid while in boot camp, but your pay is "accrued" and released only after training is complete-of course with that big fat deduction for that initial issue. The USMC needs to rolled into the Army and disbanded. There is no need for their "specialty" any longer. the last time a amphibious landing of any note was made on a hostile beach was in the Korean war!

The Corps ain't about having a job. It's about being a Marine which is a life style of it's own.Look at the average age of the Corps. It's the youngest of the armed forces and that's for a reason. It wantskids with few attachments who can ship out at a moments to god knows where. The Corps is set up so that after a four year tour, the majority of it's members will transition to college, the civilian workforce or another branch of the military. It's not a question of the Corps being unable to retain anybody. The Corps doesn't want that many lifers. It wants to replace you with another fresh faced 18 year old out of high school when your 4 years are up.That means the Corps has the luxury of making sure anybody who hangs around for a second or third tourreally buys into the values because that guy will have to motivate those 18 year old boots. The Corps ain't selling keeping a job. It's selling personal transformation you can take throughout your lifein whatever you do AFTER THE CORPS. They stress turning out a better American citizen then the guy whowent in and the Corps makes a point of pointing out the successful people in the civilian world who oncewore it's uniform. The Corps tells it's recruits about the successful actors, businessmen, political figures, public servantsand athletes who still carry the title Marine till the day they die. That is what they are selling, not bonusesnot an MOS.Look around KZread at all the former Marines who still talk about the Corps 30,40,50 yearsafter doing a 4 year tour. Nobody else shows that much loyalty to a service for driving a truckin the Army or fixing engines in the Navy.

if this turns you off of joining then you didnt have what it takes to join in the first place. Its not about being brainwashed its about realizing you dont matter and theirs a million people in this country, and only a few of them are able to do what matters and keep this country safe. The military is not for jobs its not for gettin education its not for getting your life together and learning how to fucntion, if you cant live in society already then joining the military isnt for you. You need to realize its greater than you and your life, greatness is built on the backs of the strong not the weak realize that shit

I'm sorry to say, that is typical marine talk. People who assume that they need to be some small insignificant part of the world, that's typical marine mentality. "You're nothing in the grand scheme of things". Let me tell you about the people who founded this country. You know how they started off? As nobodies. No one knew who they were. They had a different mentality. It's not those who are humble but those who wish to be great that change this world. George Washington wanted to change the world when he fought for out independence. You can tell yourself that your life isn't about you. That's fine. You can get no education and not straighten out your life. That's fine. The thing is, you'll never amount to anything. You will never change the world you live in or have any real effect on it. There are people out there who want to amount to something in life and want to really change the world they live in. They are the people who will make the real difference. Before you tell me I don't know what it is like. I joined up the day I turned 17. I'm proud to have served this country. I will continue to serve. Thing is, I want to be something more than just some grunt. It's not about me not mattering, it's about how I can really change the world for the better. It's about how significant my ideas and my actions will really be. No one notices an ant because no see what it changes, but the actions of man will ring throughout history. My final point being, go ahead and stick with your typical marine mentality if you don't want to really amount to something. But if you want to truly change the world you live in, dump that stupidity and make your mark in this world.

It doesn't mater what you have signed. Until you get on a bus or plain, you are free to walk away any time you want. I thought about the Marines and signed paperwork allowing me go join the wold class athlete program and would be training for the Olympic trials. I friend of mines mother was dating an Army Vet and new what the plan was. they invited me for dinner which wasn't unusual, but it turned out to be an intervention. Twenty vets from all branches were their some retired some not but all of them told me to join the Air Force. I had already been to the MEPS and had a date to ship out. 22 years and more deployments than I can count from Desert Shield Desert Storm to OIF/OEF and several Joint Task Force deployments and I'm so glad I listened to them. Don't get me wrong all branches have there good and bad and if I want someone to put rounds down range then I want the Army and Marines to do it, if I want to be in a branch that does things the smart way than I'll stick with the Air Force.

Spot on man...I did my first term in the Marines and am transferring to the Army. I did fine, and performed OK but promotions are a dead end. The highest rank almost anyone will pick up is Sergeant and it is nigh impossible to pick up staff. Most ppl I know have been in for 10+ years and still haven't picked up staff yet. Everything is a "hand me down" from the Army. Even the fucking humvees we drove were from the Army. Comm gear? From the Army. Everything you do has to be meticulous to the smallest detail.

Might be the nostalgia talking, but in hindsight I really enjoyed my time in the Marines more than I'd openly admit, and I was definitely quite the free thinker/hippy too. There was plenty of bureaucratic bullshit I hated (and I expected that going in), but living through it with my boys is probably why we're still tight today. As far as I know, half of us didn't want to reenlist because combat deployments fucking stopped and the other half didn't because of some of the same shit this guy already mentioned. When it came down to it, there was just no one else to shoot at, and we all sure as hell didn't enlist for a peacetime Marine Corps. We all chose to be grunts during a time of war because we wanted to fucking kill shitholes across the ocean, but we're not really doing much of that anymoever since we pulled out. And yeah, the war isn't technically "over" for the US since we still have some guys over there, but it doesn't look like it's "starting up" in high-gear anytime soon either.

Correct. People join the Marines because they want to fight and test themselves, it is not a career choice like the Army, it is a test of fortitude and character. Once achieved it is time to move on and take those life changing experiences and skills to the next level.

=] No, people join combat arms (and closely-affiliated specialties) (e.g., infantry, forward observer, combat medic, cavalry, armor...) or special ops (e.g., SF, PJs, SEALs...) because they want to fight. They hide behind a generic label like "marine" or "soldier" when they want to self-servingly mislead ignorant civilians. "I'm a Marine" is code for "I'm really a truck driver, a mechanic, a cook or a computer programmer, but I once graduated School of Infantry with other truck drivers, mechanics, cooks, computer programmers and 300 females, and my DI told me that we were all 'really' riflemen so I want you to think I was like one of those guys in Generation Kill...or I woulda, coulda, shoulda been one if I wasn't so smart that the Corps assigned me elsewhere against my will". Whatever you say...

I went through basic training for the Army then I saw how different it was later in the service at another basic training environment that I was kind of shocked. I would like to understand the rules that govern military bearings/conduct since I have seen units operate differently in conduct/bearing and from what it appears other branches operate differently in conduct/bearings. I am guessing this has something to do with whatever job you do in military. But after basic training, AIT, and two different duty stations upon my third station I was in shocked from how things were at the third duty station and some what confused by how things were in a reserve unit. It just did not make sense to me or something or I could not understand... (I FORGOT TO WHATEVER EXTENT I RECEIVED INFORMATION TO WHATEVER EXTENT ABOUT MILITARY CONDUCT AT DUTY STATION AND/OR DIVISION OR SOMETHING).

After being a Navy Corpsman attached with a marine unit, this guy is absolutely right! if you don't acclimate to the marine corps lifestyle! you wont promote! and you wont stay past your first enlistment. I've seen so many good guys that had their own minds, thought logically and they just wouldn't promote. I have been active duty for 6 years, 2 years blue side navy and the rest green side (Marine infantry Co.).

+Lightning We hold ourselves to a higher standard than the rest of the military. Although you will run into bad apples, that happens everywhere you go. You're allowed to drink. It's up to you to decide if you've had enough. Common sense everywhere (not just the military) says you should have a designated sober person. So there you go- risk mitigated. In the army, as I've seen with my own eyes while attending a follow on school, the personnel there are very "simple" and individualist. In the Marine Corps, you have less opportunities generally speaking, but that's all because of money aka funds. The army has more funds, therefore set up more opportunities, and incentives for the individual to stay in. Many Marines leave because right now, the Corps is changing. Seems to be getting weaker. But still, the average Marines are still better than the average soldiers (we're obviously excluding SOF elements). Army = quantity, Marines = quality. How much you achieve is on you and your efforts.

  • @briannguyen5725

    @briannguyen5725

+Lightning at boot camp, yes, you'll feel like a robot. And trust me, there are many many times everyone has thought about quitting and asking why the fuck didn't I just do this. Or just do that. Or do this instead. We know why. Marines are the ones they ask to defend embassies abroad. Marines are the one they send first- ready to go anywhere in 6 hours- yes, we're talking about regular normal infantry Marines, compared to the army Rangers (somewhat of a SOF element) that stated in Times magazines "18 hours" But once you finish all (Boot, SOI, MOS) your training, which is the hardest in the entire defense department at entry level, you'll enter the fleet. And become a normal person, pretty much like in a college frat. Just with more discipline and more structure. If you're hesitant, then definitely go for Marine reserves. Army is disgusting from what I've seen at their basic training. But they become normal too when they enter their version of the fleet. Idk what they call it.

  • @briannguyen5725

+Lightning you don't become a Marine for the benefits. Though they are there equally for all branches. You become a Marine for the experience, adventure, and to kill. You join the army for the job and comfort and probably because the recruiter promised you so many things. Navy to travel the world. Air Force because you want it easy as fuck.

Listen to this boot. You just joined. You're still wet behind the ears son. Some can hack it others can't. In MY Army experience... I had two ex Marines assigned to my squad when I was a squad leader. The PFC was was a good troop but he couldn't keep up. Overweight and eventually chaptered out. The SGT couldn't lead for shit. One of my worst troops. Failed Air Assault school about three fucking times and wondered why I wouldn't recommend him for promotion. When I was an instructor I worked with three former Marines all staff sergeants. I had no idea they were Marines until it came out in conversation one day. They were average NCOs. We also ran ranges and would have alot of prior service Marines. We discovered that many had trouble zeroing & qualifying on the 300m range. The point of the story is not to disparage the Marines. You can buy into all the rah rah bullshit if you want but anybody that's been in the military long enough knows the real deal. I don't want to write too much cuz I know you devil dogs can't read too much. Ooorah? ;-)

That all depends on your MOS. If you are a Marine Infantry then it's gonna suck as a lower enlisted. Your first enlistment is gonna be hell. I am not a Marine I am a SOLDIER but I have trained with the Marines when I was stationed at Schofield Barracks HI 25th ID. You are correct about the Marine Mentality. They have NO LOGIC! If it's not the Marine Way it is Wrong No Ifs or Buts. It is good at times but most of the time is just plain stupid. The Army let you use common sense and logic. Many times I feel bad for the Marines during joint training.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Marines is actually the Easiest to get in. The Marines ASVAB Test requirement is very low compared to other Branch of Service. Maybe you mean the Hardest Training to get in. Just make sure you get the MOS that you want. In the Marines if you do not have an" OPEN CONTRACT". they will chose the MOS for you depending on your ASVAB score or the needs of the USMC. The recruiters Job is to get as much enlisted men and women in the Military. My advice to you is MAKE SURE YOU GET IT ON PAPER!!!! DO NOT GET YOURSELF GET SCREWED!!! GOOD LUCK!!

Whichever MOS you want to pick just make sure it is on paper. I am not an Infantry which is 11B in the Army. I am 12B Combat Engineer. As a Veteran I can say that is was a great Experience but If I was to do it all over again. I would join the Air Force or the NAVY. WHY? because serving your country is not about your MOS. A life of an Army Combat Engineer is no more valuable than a life of an Airforce Aircraft technician. I did 6yrs as a Combat Engineer now I have a bad back from all the heavy loads we have to carry on our back. I was young then and I have the same motivation like you do. Do want to see your future as a GRUNT? look at all the Infantry men from the Army and Marines coming home from War. It is your choice but remember this serving your country is not about your MOS.

Sometimes, you just have to let people learn the hard way. I'm joining the Marine Corps too, but I can tell you right now, if you're going into infantry you better take advantage of your GI Bill and get a hell of a degree (unless the military will be your career) because infantry isn't going to give you shit when you retire. Furthermore, if you're not on disability (and I hope you never will be) from combat, you won't be getting anything when you get out, so you need to consider picking an MOS that is not only satisfying for you to do, but will also give you skills and training that will help obtain a job in the civilian world.
