    I want to let everybody know that the installer of my PV panels broke 8 of the roof tiles during the installation of the panels. He didn't tell me what had happened. Fortunately for me, it rained the next day and it leaked into the house! Make sure your "contract" with the installer includes liability on the installer's part to fix the damage that was caused when your panels were being installed. Reputable installers are a must for this type of work. Enjoy!

    On dimmable LEDs... you may also have to replace the dimmer switch because most older dimmer switches are not compatible with LEDs (even 'dimmable' LEDs)... you wind up with serious flickering. So if you have a flickering problem with your dimmable LEDs, look into getting LED compatible dimmer switches, there's a good chance that was the problem. -Matt

    Heat pump water heaters are cheaper to run than gas (approximately half based on national averages) and even less than tankless gas. The best is to get water heating tied to a ground sourced heat pump. I've had both and will put an air sourced heat pump water heater in my under construction house. I've had two solar arrays, and in one house even generated as much as 1.4mWh more than I used in a month (net metering).

    I am one of these “solar sales persons”… I pride myself in educating homeowners who have no idea where solar is today and how it can benefit them specifically. I have made many friends with the homeowners I serve, who I still keep in touch with. I would never push anyone to make a decision, and I always urge them to do their due diligence and seek other quotes. I appreciate you shedding light on the current status of solar, but I would also appreciate if you didn’t generalize every solar sales person as subhuman. Makes it sound like you think that these guys that are out here daily, walking X miles to spread the word to as many people as possible (which dramatically helps our efforts to build a cleaner future), are undeserving of the opportunity to help you understand where solar is at. There are genuine people in the industry who truly believe in solar and what it can do for all of us, and they put a lot of time and energy to making sure that no one is left behind.

    Pay attention to what state and local governments are doing. SDG&E rates are so high, that solar was a no brainer. But, California has, and is, making changes that make solar far less attractive. Time of use, changes rates by time of day (much higher after the sun goes down), lowering rate they buy excess power, and increasing the monthly fee. You can offset some of this by adding batteries, but the payback time is much longer.

    this is why I would not even be thinking of a solar system until after the CPUC lets us know what the new rules will be. If they keep net metering in place and guarantee us a 20 year grandfathering, I would then run out and get solar immediately. Someday down the road, they will get rid of net metering, and when that happens, the cost benefits of solar will decrease drastically.

    I’m getting solar for my 3.5 year old house. Getting 12 SunPower M series 440 Watt panels (5.28 kW system) with built in micro inverters. The panels have top of the line 22.8% efficiency. SunPower is definitely costly. I’m paying cash, and the gross cost is over $21k ($15k after federal tax rebate and $750 gift card). Their battery would have nearly doubled the price, so I passed on that. Where I live in CA, so far I haven’t had any power outages (knock on wood). PG&E is also going crazy with the rate hikes. The theory is they are trying to recover the money they lost from lawsuits, plus having to upgrade their antiquated infrastructure to prevent future fires. A large portion of the cost of my PG&E bills has been due to natural gas. My tankless water heater and cook top are gas powered. As far as I know, everything else is electric. If these natural gas prices don’t go down, might look into switching cooktop and tankless water heater to electric.

Before moving here I researched everything about solar and batteries for almost three years so that I could install my solar system. I actually enjoyed it, that was in 2017. I’m now 70, and still enjoy it when I’m making wires and adding a few more panels. I now have approximately 2200 watts of power to my charge controller and a few more panels to add. Those will be connected to my spare charge controller.I do want to switch to lithium iron batteries sometime soon. I enjoyed your video very much.

    We replaced our natural gas heater when it went out with a hybrid Rheem electric heat pump water heater. Incredibly efficient, and operates like the new Tesla heat pump heating systems compared to resistive heating for older Tesla's. Way cheaper, and helps with cooling the house during the summer. We switch over to outside air for the water heating during the winter, as they are ducted with a bypass to be able to switch between outside and inside air.

    FWIW, I've watched several other video's where users/installers have reported relatively high failure rates with some micro-inverters...so it's not clear that micro-inverters necessarily have a lower failure rate than String inverters...What is clear is that servicing micro-inverters will require that the repair person will need to get up on your roof to service them so depending on the service plan you have (e.g., labor not included) it could be more expensive to service those micro-inverters (as they are all on your roof and not accessible as a String Inverter) . And some string inverter mfgs (e.g., SMA) have proactive monitoring built into them to constantly monitor the health of the string inverter to detect degradation/issues with their string inverter and will automatically send the replacement part to an installer for installation. Granted I will say that the video I referenced said that enPhase micro-inverters seemed to have very low failure rates. The other brand that they mentioned (can't recall which mfg..started with a "V" I think) had a relatively high failure rate when compared with enPhase micro inverters.

    I just had a heat-pump water heater installed and its cost is roughly similar (even a little lower) than the gas water heater it replaced. (natural gas). As to why I replaced the old gas water heater with an electric heat-pump, that's a long saga. I think the key to heat-pump water heaters is to get one that is efficient enough to either not have or never need to use backup resistive heating elements. And get a big, well insulated tank, because heat-pump water heaters don't recharge the tank as quickly. This particular unit heats up the (steel) tank to 155F and then a mixer valve on the outlet mixes it down to 125F, which is perfect for our needs (we have long hot water pipes so it needs to be slightly hotter leaving the tank). No backup heating elemnts, the tank is just a tank so it should last a very, very long time. The heat pump unit is situated outside the basement just on the other side of the wall from the tank inside the basement. Still, I was quite surprised at just how well the new water heater works. I learned a few lessons while recording the kWh use of the new water heater. The big one was that running the hot water recirculator 4-5 times a day (15 minute intervals) doubled the electricity consumption. So I did sacrifice that a bit and only run the recirculator once a day. -- One note on placement of the solar panels... South for maximum power, but actually the utility really wants people to put panels on the west side too, towards the setting sun, because (at least in California), the grid has plenty of solar generation during the day, but it tails off quickly after 4pm. So the more solar people have that continues to generate past 4pm, the better it is for the utility. So having solar panels facing several different directions is beneficial. Given how cheap the actual panels have become, it doesn't add a whole lot to the cost to super-size the installation by adding panels on multiple faces of the house. -Matt

  • @l0gic23

    @l0gic23

    2 жыл бұрын

    Since the utilities don't let you grid tie as much as your roof can support (at least not everywhere),... The less ideal directions should not count towards those arbitrary limitations (based on your historical usage).

  • @junkerzn7312

    @junkerzn7312

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@l0gic23 Its one of those edge cases where (particularly in CA) the utility originally promoted panel geometries for maximum total generation, but now the utility is in the position of desiring that home solar produce more into the late afternoon. The regulations haven't caught up yet. This doesn't prevent home owners from adding more solar... you can put as much solar on your roof as you want. You just can't necessarily grid-tie the whole thing. Regulations for home storage systems tend to be even more stringent. Generally speaking the regulation there (in many / most locations) is that you can export excess solar from your panels, but you cannot export while your home storage is discharging. This is because numerous home owners in the past have run heavily-polluting generators tied into their home storage systems to game the system and export during high-TOU periods. Ultimately these regulations will also have to change as it becomes more desirable to the utility that homes export through the evening peak. Albeit, still with the requirement that the power be sourced from solar and not a home diesel or gas generator :-). -Matt

  • @seanhoude

    The biggest problem that I am seeing is that the utilities are finding that the grid cannot support all these homes pushing excess power. Between already losing you and you now causing their costs to increase, electric rates can only go up for everyone. It's a frustrating, vicious cycle. Unfortunately, this means having to go the battery route, which I had hoped to avoid. We're not going to have a choice.

    Well, I'm sure more juice would be squeezed if the cost went down per unit of measure. Time of use is so ridgid and seemingly designed to be painful... I'd there is excess power during the day in CA... Give me a discount and I'll get my clothes washed and dried... Instead, CA ships power to other states ... Don't have time of use and do your laundry at night.... No customer benefits... Why do I have to commit under penalty... Just charge a demand generated rate 24/7 to everyone... Don't make some people pay for others.... It's stupidly complex if you don't have solar/battery to balance things in your home

    Hi Ricky. Love your content!!! I recently moved into a new small community near Rocky Mountain National Park. There's roughly 100 homes in the valley. We're in unincorporated Larimer county in Colorado. There's a a great team spirit here. Are there options to set up a micro-grid for the valley? I would guess anywhere between 25 to 75% of the homes would consider forming and joining a small organization for community electricity. Obviously we do not have sufficient numbers to saturate a full mega-pack. Are there smaller options (Tesla or not) we could consider? I would suspect there are tons of communities that would benefit from a smaller solution to capture and store the sun. This could be a great topic for your channel. Thanks for all you do.

And yet Sempra comes back to the Public Utility Company begging for relief and requesting rate increases and they are "modernizing" (their words) the fees and reimbursement rates associated with Solar. I've seen my power bills go up by 300% over the last 3 years even though my total consumption has stayed the same...why because of time of use changes that they claimed were not a "price increase). BS! How about they fire their CEO's and hire someone that will do JUST AS GOOD of a job as they are doing at a fraction of the cost. And the salaries I reference are only the CEO salaries...can you imagine what the total compensation for the "executives" is when you factor in all of the other OVERPAID executive staff. This is where we need government to step in and regulate these "monopolies" on behalf of the consumer. I'm jussayin....

    I have a question about how to view my current electric bill and if its worth it for me to install. I recently found out that PG&E's bill actually was in 2 parts - actual usage and delivery charge. When people ask me: how much is your electric bill? do I take in the account of PG&E's delivery charge? If not, my bill is only like $30 a month, would that still be worth my while to look into solar? And I can't seem to find discussion about that part online.

    40% of the grid is home supply. Home rooftops solar PV can be 6.6kw, 33kwh. Homes are at the ends of the grid. Now the grid can suck this excess into the grid, 40%, so industry 60% can be reduced to 20%. With the big EV car battery plugged in the grid can now increase supply to industry or just trade power and make money. The money will be in the grid.

    First world problems. I sold large 8D Duracell (East Penn) batteries in Tukwila Wa, USA to lots of people who were exporting them to different countries in Africa. They, the exporters told me that most small low power homes in most of Africa are powered by panels mounted to improvised homes, they take the DC & charge batteries with it directly in 48v series setups, then use an inverter to convert to 220vac 50hz for appliance loads. American households waste energy. A hybrid water heater & geothermal or air source heat pump can dramatically lower energy consumers. Sunfrost makes fridges that use 90% less electricity, & the hybrid hot water heater gets the same COP "free energy" benefits as HVAC air source heat pumps vs AC & resistive heating. Keeping more money in your pocket also means you should get your info on how to safely doing electrical work DIY, watch how to, then do a lot of the basic work, when your not working, during free time & pay a contractor electrician to help you do the detailed hookup safely & arrange for permitting, so unless you get paid $125 per hour, it usually pays to do stuff DIY & save more of that money, for batteries & panels & inverters. In 120vac land, most homes have a 200amp service panels with two 100amp 120v legs. Neutral is ground at the panel also. I installed a 240v 40amp L2 charger with conduit tubing inside my rental home with no help, just KZread education & used it for 5 years to charge my then Nissan LEAF & no one was the wiser. I am a scientist & careful to educate myself before trying anything DIY. Tuned my Honda Grom engine DIY, without any prior experience, just education online & the right parts & tools. Most people are not curious enough to educate themselves * can't figure out the correct search terms to order the rights stuff. What happened to all the real men in America ? MIA ? Grow as set & have some self confidence & read & educate yourself before you state a DIY anything that normally only PRO's do. I was able to swap out a normal natural gas water heater & installed an instant Honda RL75i Rennai, moved the water lines, gas lines & electrical, all DIY.

    I'm wondering how long it takes to make up the cost of the solar over the savings on your electric bill. Is it really cost effective. My cousin had to build his house all electric in the early to mid 70s in Wichita, Kansas because they had a moratorium on gas installation even back then. He made the walls twice the thickness of normal construction just because of that. The electric still cost him an arm and a leg. I don't think I'd put the inverters on the panels here in Vegas because of the heat. I used to live in San Diego. What part of town are you in, Ricky? Why did you move?

    So one question....how much of the warranty leverage would a homeowner have if they purchase say Panasonic panels and one fails within a year but the installer went out of business prior to the panel failure. Does the warranty go with the panel (component) itself or is it linked with the installer. I'm assuming that the panel warranty still applies but the homeowner might have to contract (aka pay) another installer to remove and install the replacement panel and of course that payment would have to be out of their pocket. That type of scenario does raise a lot of questions wrt to warranties? (e.g., does the homeowner get a copy of all of the applicable manufacturers warranties, can they contact the manufacturer directly if a part dies but the installer is out of business?, Do installers normally provide the homeowner with all of the manufacturer warranty info and if not should the homeowner request this info from their installer if not provided, etc.). The Do's and Don'ts about selecting your installer is a probably a video in itself.

    Well...I hope your injuries you suffered from falling off that limb you went out on for LG are healing ok. At least they are going to honor their warranties, and I think you're still safe about them being around as a company, just not a panel producer. Panels are my last question mark, and I will be getting contacts and quotes for a system on my new house in the next day or two. 100% decided on the Enphase IQ8s. Be interesting to see what the installers recommend for panels. I'm going to get at least 3, and possibly more quotes. Two are platinum certified Enphase installers and the 3rd is silver. All have pretty good reviews and don't expect them to be as pushy as what you experienced. I just can't justify the price of storage right now, especially with a ~180kWh battery pack in my Rivian R1T that will appear in my garage in the "first half of 2023". And Enphase's upcoming 5P later this year and next gen slated for 2023 will by everything I have read be quite a leap forward in capability and a step down in cost. Your videos are always top notch and among the very best out there. Always a balanced mention of the upside and downside of whatever the topic is, without making it an agenda to overly prop up or attack a technology or issue solely based on a polarized political view. Rare to see these days.

    Wait you guys heat your water with electricity... Ricky we need to talk... Your Solar panels are 20% efficient most of that energy lost as heat. Solar water heaters are around 90% efficient. The only energy needed is to run a small pump to circulate the water. Please look into this! In Hawaii most homes have solar thermal - It's a Must! It's also just silly. You are taking raw energy from the sun and making into a very refined level of energy (electricity) and then just converting it to heat. Heat is what you started with... Just store it in a big hot water heater tank. We have a rainy season in Hawaii and sometimes its cloudy for a week where I live. I can easily go a week in this minimal heat gain state without running out of hot water (family of three) 3,000+ sq ft. home. I think you have as good or better conditions in SD. Also the systems do have an electric heat element in case you have protracted cloudy weather or live in more variable weather areas. Let's get the word out about Solar Thermal!!!

    Ok...so bare with me on my skepticism and educate me...I'm a drone "pilot" as well....it seems that unless the damage to your roof is extremely obvious (broken/missing tiles, etc) how can you assess the condition of a roof just via a drone as you describe @21:30. Are you using FLIR tech? My assumption, albeit I could be wrong, is that in the majority of the issues that cause leaks in a roof are not immediately obvious from an external viewpoint but more subtle...ala..underlying roofing "paper" degradation after 20years of baking in the sun under the tiles, etc. that now serves as entry point for water, etc. So I can't see how flying a drone over your roof could spot the less obvious but majority of issues that cause leaks with a roof. BTW I have a DJI A2S so I'm familiar with the quality of drone footage (e.g., 4K60).

The 15-year life span on the other-hand is dead-on. My original inverter (Sunny Boy 3kW high voltage inverter) gave up the ghost after almost precisely 15 years. But really, there is no particular reason why a string inverter would fail more often than individual panel inverters. And replacing one is trivial due to their accessibility. Takes 30 minutes. That said, I think individual panel inverters have more than proved their worth in the intervening years. -Matt
