I really enjoyed this show. Sad it did not have more seasons.

from what I understand- when they added the kids, it began to gain some traction and they were planning a new season as ratings picked up, but they decided to cancel it in the end and replace it with Step by Step the following season.

@@The_Retro_Sitcom_Network Baby Talk, which had a tryout run on TGIF during the spring of 1991, had even higher ratings than Going Places -- and that's why GP wasn't renewed. It was basically a choice of picking up either Baby Talk or Going Places for the following season. Step By Step still would have gone forward even if Going Places went to season 2.

@@VaultMasterDBT gotcha, I guess they were looking to cash in on the success of Look Who's Talking

@@VaultMasterDBT That's the truth. Baby Talk's ratings were really high. Similar to Just the Ten of Us. The show was initially a ratings success finishing the season ranked 27th among all programs with a 14.3 average household share. Mostly due to the curiosity that had long surrounded the project; stemming from its movie influence and the behind-the scenes issues.

@@averymerrick That last sentence sounds like the one I wrote years ago on the Wikipedia article for Baby Talk. :) Yes, Baby Talk landed in the Top 30, and that resulted in its renewal over Going Places. The latter did improve toward the end of its single-season run, coming in at #34 (it had ranked at #50 back in the fall), but it wasn't enough for ABC, especially when it came down to a choice of Going Places or Baby Talk.

Thanks for uploading these. Even with a small sample size, I thought the Here's Looking at You storylines with Holland Taylor were much more enjoyable than the group working with Dick Roberts, and the episodes with the kids were not great. Executives disagreed though.

I think they wanted it be like an adult sitcom at the back end of the TGIF block for parents. I think the ratings suffered a bit and when they brought on the kids it gained popularity

@@The_Retro_Sitcom_Network I liked the fact that Miller-Boyett was taking a stab at a show with a more adult demographic - it was kind of a "Friends" before "Friends". However, it came to no surprise that ABC wanted to add more children to the cast in order to make it more compatible with the family audience of TGIF. In either incarnation, I think GP should have either been given an earlier Friday time slot or have been tried out on, say, Tuesday. It may have had even more success outside of Friday at 9:30. Ideally, I would have kept Holland Taylor while having Philip Charles MacKenzie in the mix. We didn't really need the obnoxious Dick Roberts. I loved the fact that Philip and Hallie were working on another sitcom together after their time on "Brothers".
