    After seeing some more one stars I made this video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y56mm86qe9vWhLg.html ALSO NOTE: When doing unscripted content I often go back and listen and realize I might not have articulated things as well as I wanted too and I also see things that I may have misunderstood. So I will clarify a few things here: 1: You can have mouse & keyboard prompts show up but you have to change this in the settings. Personally I think this should be automatic as many players do no realise they can do this until much later. 2: There is a tutorial but it can also be missed if you decide to jump the gap first and end up in the boss fight. I missed it as an experienced souls players so I was fine, but I can see why this could be really frustrating as a new player to the series. 3: I misunderstood when the reviewer said “delayed” attacks. In souls games you have to time your weapon swings and spell animations, there’s no instant response. This is a big part of these games. When you attack, you have to account for the full animation (ie. swinging your hammer back). I can understand why some don’t like this, but many also do. It adds another level of skill to the combat encounters and makes timing extremely important. 4: Spells might feel like equipment because you have to equip the spell icon/sheet, however the spell itself is not “equipment.” The spell is something you have memorized in your head and your character only has the mental capacity to memorize so many spells each day (you can increase the amount by finding memory stones.) 5: I forgot to add that FromSoftware also likes to tell their narrative through environmental story telling & even items that you find. 6: I think I get what the guy was talking about with target lock while being on the horse. When you click it while trying to target lock but fail to lock onto the enemy, it rapidly pulls the camera back to center. Kind of annoying I can agree. 🐺 Become a Member - kzread.info/dron/i3RdvCWYMzdF-iUgG_0xLQ.htmljoin 🐺 🔵 Discord (free) - discord.gg/4GyD7ZR Jan Update - kzread.info/dash/bejne/hWGkyNaqmLHZhpM.html GOG Link - af.gog.com/partner/Wolfheartfps?as=1676346721 NOTE* Any game purchased even if not on my personal GOG partner page will support the channel (up to 7 days after clicking the link) Socials - Follow my Twitter - twitter.com/wolfheartfps Instagram - instagram.com/wolfheartfps Support the Channel 🐺 Become a Member - kzread.info/dron/i3RdvCWYMzdF-iUgG_0xLQ.htmljoin 🔴 Patreon - www.patreon.com/WolfheartFPS 👕Wolf Apparel Store - www.teespring.com/stores/wolf-apparel-7

    They did this all the way back in Dark Souls 1 too. The Catacombs were right next to Firelink Shrine (basically the first area) and most new players who went that way and got their ass kicked realized "oh shit, I probably shouldn't go this way yet" and went up to the Undead Burg which was way easier and should typically be where you go first

I obviously love it, I think it's the perfect medieval fictional fantasy world, I've always wanted a game like Elden Ring, and I think I've finally got it. But, after playing countless hours of it, I can see why people might dislike it. I won't lie, sometimes the game can feel so pointlessly hard that it's boring. I just want to chill out and enjoy myself, but I can't because of how hard everything is to kill. In order to play elden ring, you have to be in a concentration kinda mood, but that's not really the mood everyone is in after a long day of work. I personally think it deserved the GOTY, it's such a good and well made video game. It's obviously far from perfect,but honestly just what it achieved makes it deserve it, Ragnarok is in general a better game, but Elden Ring just deserves it. They see the enemy about to strike so they try to dodge them out the way. But the animation was still in action. Being honest I was technically not introduced into elden ring, I had heard of it before and knew my friend played it, but nothing more really. So it was really a blind buy. Once I bought it I was surprised by the tutorial, and how other players could leave messages and try to kill you while not even being in your game. After getting brutally murdered and getting told I'm maidenless, I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to join my friend (didn't know multiplayer yet.) And when I couldn't do that, I made the mistake of trying to fight the tree sentinel and obviously, with me never having played a souls game I died. A lot. I ended up going the opposite direction and still died. The game wasn't telling me where to go and I was lost. So I left the game. For 2 days before I had the wonderful idea to search up how to beat the tree sentinel, unlike my giga Chad brother who beat the tutorial boss and tree sentinel on his 1st try, who like me had zero souls experience. When I beat the tree sentinel I got his halberd. And I legit thought it was one of the best weapons in the game. Then I found out about the paladin setup and was hooked. Great game from software, GG. tldr: Elden ring doesn't hold your hand. If you don't like that you can have other people hold it by SEARCHING IT UP. Edit: 100 likes, that's the most I've gotten on a stupid comment. And for that one guy doubting my brother, unlike me, he used strats for beating bosses, aka using samurai for the tutorial boss, and the horse for tree sentinel. If you're wondering how he knew how to do any of this, it's mostly because I showed him on my character save, before he made his own and copied what I did. Take notes beginners, if you want to beat the tutorial boss, stay light loaded with your armour and spam the bow with samurai. This strat also works with Malenia, "Blade of Miquilla" who has apparently never known defeat.

    Bruh, I love to hear stories like yours, of players who learned these games the hard way, because Elden Ring purposefully tried to avoid that. It makes it so that you probably have, or at least should run away to get stronger and then just steamroll the earlier opponents, and there's no shame in that, it's what the game wants you to do and it is legitimate. But when I hear stories like yours my mind immediately go back to when I was a kid, picking Dark Souls 2 for the first time, not knowing that I-Frames existed, slowly learning to hide behind a shield, carelessly bruteforcing my way through areas and finding my first boss just to die a bunch of times trying to kill it. I wasn't supposed to get where I was, hell, to this day I ask myself how I got so far without even knowing what the "roll" button did, not even all the walkthroughs and speedruns I watched were enough, but eventually I learned enough to beat it, got to Dark Souls 1, went through all that suffering again, and by the time Dark Souls 3 was announced I was already experienced enough to declare these as my favourite games of all time. It shaped me as an individual and changed the way I approach videogames in general, and every time I hear about experiences like yours I am reminded of that feeling this game evokes.

    This was my first Fromsoft game ever and other than the adjusting to the difficulty which i almost had no problem with, this game was flawless for me, I loved this game because, it felt to me like you actually have to use your brain for everything, and knowing you did that thing or completed a confusing catacomb or defeated a hard boss with strategy or skill gives you that rewarding dopamine and pride boost

    Same! I just started like a month back, so I'm still learning. I do own DS3, but really never got beyond Firelink Shrine (just took me too much to get into that game at the time), and only tried Bloodborne as a trial download for about a day. So essentially, this is my first real FromSoft game experience, and it's been absolutely amazing. I thought Horizon Zero Dawn was at/near the top of my new all-time favorite games, but at this point, I think Elden Ring surpasses that and it's not even close.

    About the tutorial bit.. my little sister usually only plays games like sims and is not experienced in videogames like this at all. She struggled with the tutorial and it took her about 8 tries to beat the first "boss" in the tutorial. But she still has a lot of fun so far (she is about 6 hours in and did not beat any bosses yet but who cares) and did beat her own "objective" to beat Varre (because he insulted her). There is nothing wrong with enjoying an open world game at your own pace and setting your own objectives. She does want to try to beat a boss soon though and it's fun to watch her play. Being honest, this is my first souls. And although I did indeed get really frustrated after getting killed by tree sentinel for 3 hours, I managed to kill him. This just sent a feeling of accomplishment through my body. This is exactly why I love the game, instead of killing everyone in one hit, you’re the one being killed in one hit. This is why it’s my favorite game, although Skyrim held that throne for a while it became boring. After I got the best armor possible with the best enchantments available to me and one of the greatest weapons in the game my motivation to play it fell. I was an elden ring boss, enemies couldn’t kill me and I one shot everyone. This is why I love elden ring, I spent 30 minutes getting my ass kicked by margit the fell omen, I came back with better weapons and spells and managed to beat him. With all that, he still gave me one hell of a challenge, which in turn gave me that sweet feeling of accomplishment. Exploring the world is my favorite thing by a lot, I don’t get that feeling of annoyance of traveling from one end of the map to the other like in other games.

This would do the thing of allowing you to skip it or do it kind of thing and not be forced to. Included in the skip part would be not taking away the souls you would get from it either so no down side to skipping like in other games. So a little altar to how the design is done but not a lot. The enemies right outside the area are still like that but run away to fast and don't provide a target to try all the actions you can do.

The community and help about the game really makes it so much better to experience, and who knows maybe thats what From Software also want, instead of a lengthy boring tutorial like in other games. This was my first souls game. There was a tutorial. That cave at the start where the boss was a simple soldier. Reading the prompts gave you basically all the info you needed on combat (albeit having to figure a bit out, like why my staff cant guard or stupid stuff like that but, you kinda figure it out fast) and the info is available to go back and reread. There's a ton of prompts during the first 5 minutes of the game as well. IDK why that was such a common complaint. I recall thinking how well the game leaded you WITHOUT giving you an objective pointer, the way the road is designed you feel rather compelled to go through the forest to the ruins and get your first map fragment. Going anywhere else is kind of (well i need to find a way there) like the swamps or beach. The tree sentinel is there to teach you not everything is meant to be fought yet and there's a cave you find on the way to the fragment which seems intimidating but with only wolves and an incredibly easy boss gives you an idea of what boss fights will be like.

    Your right about the wolf cave. The early game world is very carefully designed to teach you the lessons you'll need to play through the rest of the game. That cave, the first ruins with lots of enemies so you learn to be careful about how you approach fights, the ambush just past it to make sure you meet the level up npc and either learn ranged dodging or head off to explore southwards... Its better than any other Soulsborne game for damn sure. I don't blame people for missing the tutorial since you had to jump down to it though.

Granted, i’m only 2 hours in and plan to give it at least 5 hours before i decide to give up or keep playing. some things as a new souls player: I love the open world aspect, just about every game I play has an open world aspect. I wish there was a little bit more sense of direction at least in the beginning while you’re trying to figure out the game. Especially for people like me who have never played a souls game ever. Farming is incredibly boring. People keep talking about the difficulty curve, but there isn’t much of a curve at all. You start off as the weakest thing on the world map aside from animals. Even the NPC at the first lost grace is stronger than you (I didn’t realize he could take damage and hit him while messing around. He killed me in two blows) The game does look fantastic though. i’m not gonna say it’s a good or bad game because after two hours I don’t think that’s a fair judgment for me to make. I will say though that I am definitely leaning towards “this is not a game for me“ and it’s mostly because of those issues I mentioned above. And the part that’s most disappointing about that is I was reading so much about how this game was supposed to be inviting to new players. But I don’t really feel welcomed into the game at all

    The vagueness of both lore and npc questlines is literally a giant part of what makes souls unique and feel so much more deep and meaningful. The fact you can discover things about the world, and connections with characters etc by reading items, or seeing things in the environment and putting 2 and 2 together ON YOUR OWN without them hand feeding these things to you on a preset path, is exactly what I have always loved about souls games, and what makes them feel so much more immersive and rich and deep compared to soulless copy and paste side quests in other rpgs to fill "content" and a story that's delivered to you as if you are just watching a movie and not engaging with the world yourself. I heavily disagree on changing that aspect just to appeal to the "working formula" of mass appeal for more people.. not every work of art has to cater to every person possible. Then it's not really a work of art is it? If people really want every game to be the same damn thing over and over, I feel really sorry for them and what they miss out on.

  • @kdnu27

    @kdnu27

    I would argue with this storytelling strategy. First of all there's no story to begin with but the history. Your character doesn't take part in any events just uncovers the past. That made me completely detached from the bosses. Just another enemy to defeat, just bigger and sometimes mumbling some bs. For example I really enjoyed fight with Heimdall in God of War Ragnarok, because I had an opportunity to get to know him and instantly hate. That make the fight much more memorable than any of ER ones. With respect to quests I'd like to see some middle ground. Like journal with some hints where to go, but without straight gps route. I really liked Ranni's questline and I would like other questlines be designed as this. Don't get me wrong: as a guy who plays story-driven only games ER was suprisingly enjoyable and I most definitely will try next From Software game.

  • @RequiemOfSolo

    @RequiemOfSolo

    @@kdnu27 I can agree and see where you're coming from, but that's also largely an elden ring issue. ER was froms most scatterbrain, least cohesive and most shallow game lore/story wise. Going open world really took its toll and stretched them thin and you can see it in so many aspects coming from souls games. I couldn't care about a single boss or enemy when I saw them all suffering from open world syndrome, aka being reused and lore hamfisted in ways that solely justify their reuse, all while taking place inside an area that's a copy of another area. I heavily heavily implore you to try ds1 or ds3 and the dlcs. They are both much more deep and cohesive experiences in lore/story/world design etc.

    I just love the frustration and satisfaction this game offers. I remember playing Skyrim back in the day and finishing the main story in about 10 hours. Then I asked myself wtf is all the fuss about. On the second play through, I've started exploring every cave and location on my way to the first main objective. 60 hours in, level 30 something and still far from the gates of Whiterun... That's when I discovered the beauty of open world gaming. Now, for the first time, I'm playing a Souls game. First 5 minutes in... Dead. No map, no objective, a huge guy on a horse în golden armor, no clue of what is going on. Open map, see a glowing flame, start walking in that direction, seen by a guy, attacked... Dead. And I'm doing this 5-7 times in a row. Half an bour in, dead 15 times, I find a site of Grace on the nord of the guard outpost. The Light guids me towards the gate... I go in and a 4 storie mustached giant breaks all my bones with a single hit. So, I scratch my head and ask myself: is THAT the way I'm supposed to go!? You gotta be f....ing kidding! So I've started doing what I did în Skyrim... And now, at level 61 astrologer with a mix of strenght build, feeling almost like a God în the fight with Godrick... I get my ass kicked by Rennala. Hard... And countless times... So, back to the drawing board, back to exploring the southern part of the map, back to farming, untill I'm capabile enough to defeat her. And I'm sure that, when I'll come back to her like a true God slayer and finally kill the b...ch, I'll find, in my path, another boss that will crush me and send me back to exploring caves and leveling up until I'm good enough to finally kneel him. And that is, in (somewhat ) short, my experience with Elden Ring. Do I bate it? Sometimes, from the deepest corners of my guts. Do I let it win and rage quit? Oh, hell no! If I have to kill every 20 rune enemy in my way to get stronger, faster and tankier to defeat the next boss, then I WILL. So yeah, its not for everyone, but it definetly is the skyrim of 2022!

Open world games are often times easy at first and then starts to show you the real game , but elden ring instead just let's you figure it out and doing so just makes it so much more rewarding ... Exploration in some games is fun but very much underwhelming, but in a lot of games it is very much rewarding .

I need to read items descriptions to know more lore about the game/quests... its trully a masterpiece and the best worldbuilding I have seen so far. Ranni quest is just totally amazing. a quest that makes you explore cool places and fight cool bosses... A quest that you can miss if you just follow the "main path". And the side-quest can change or even dissapear if you progress in the main story a lot. Im almost lvl 110 and didnt finish the capital yet. going into the volcano now. im with almos 130h game and I expect to put a lot more before finishing the game. I don't get why you would say this is the Skyrim of 2022, this game is called Elden Ring and its open world is leaps and bounds better than Skyrim. Everything about Elden Ring is better than that half-finished trash. You can't just call this Skyrim because of the RPG fantasy setting, It's incredibly annoying seeing people force a comparison when clearly Elden Ring won't be remembered as Skyrim-like. It will always be remembered as Elden Ring and its mastery of the Open world will carry on to other games. No unfinished bullshit just pure art

    I think part of the issue with that is the gave us the option of doing the tutorial. If you knew the series you just went out the door and on your way. If wanted the tutorial you had to jump down into the pit. I imagine a lot of people skipped the tutorial by accident tbh. However, they did pretty well with anytime you come across something new you got a pop up that explained the mechanic AND they had a great in-depth menu legend that explains all of the stats and what they do for you. You just had to actually look instead of being spook fed the information. My only complaint with this game, aside from the subpar PC performance is the lack of a quest journal. No journal left to your own devices works in the other souls games due to being more linear, in this open world that I legit have 100 hours in and just beat tonight, it's far to massive with way to many questlines to not have at least "you spoke to so and so and they said they were headed in this direction".

Every time something happened that seemed relevant to a particular NPC, I always went back and talked to them to see if they had any particular reaction, and if they handed me an item or gave me a specific mission, I made sure to read the description and follow it. I mean... Elden Ring enemies can be melee guys, spell guys, bow guys and some beasts too... That's pretty generic, don't you think? There are dragons, who don't fight exactly like anything else, and both were actually tough enemies in both games. Skyrim was from 2011, a lot of change from there to here. The game is old, but then the open world thing was pretty new and unexplored, done only for certain MMOs like WoW, and the Skyrim world is still vast as hell and some of it's sidequests are still amazing. I mean, yeah, Elden Ring is amazing, probably the best thing I've played in a very long time, but Skyrim walked a path that wasn't safe back then.

    @@Veridiano02 In Elden ring I have seen: Humans encased in stone Horrible human centipede abominations Tiny shrunken warriors Harpies Giant bears Birds with SWORDS FOR FEET Birds with SWORDS FOR FEET that hurl EXPLOSIVES Giants with various weapons Giant golems with various weapon subtypes Various types of undead A weird fucked up bird with a skull face that looks oddly childlike that I would prefer not to talk about TIny stone blokes Giant dogs with two legs Giant birds with razor beaks Headless knights Mysterious beastmen who stare at trees and stomp their feet Floating Jellyfish Giant ants Giant rats Floating balls of electricity And all of the enemies in Elden Ring have their own movesets, animations, resistances (complete with actual tactile feedback like the stone guys who you need to 2 hand against). Plus every regular vanilla humanoid enemy who shares player animations' animations will vary based on how they are equipped. In Skyrim, you mainly have Draugr Falmer Normal Humanoids Dragons Bears Spiders Those Lich-esque draugr mages Dwarf machines Those hills have eyes guys in the misty area by Markarth And the humanoid enemies have movesets with very little impact or tactile feedback, leading to a spammy experience. They're all basically the same. Elden ring has far more enemy variety imo, and the enemies are actually significantly different from each other. Even the knights of the different areas fight differently, with some incorporating magic and others using incantations. Even the main draw of Skyrim, the Dragons, all kind of felt the same to fight. In Elden Ring different dragons have their own movesets and deadly attacks, you can't just fight them all the same way. When we talk about enemy variety it isn't an issue of generic or not, it's an issue of "Is this just a very generically programmed video game entity with a skin that makes it kind of more interesting, or is this an enemy that is responsive?". Skyrim enemy AI all kind of works the same. Their attack animations are all fairly simple. Different enemies in Skyrim don't really require all that much adaptation. Which means that, weather you're slapping a Draugr or a Barbarian, the way you fight them will be the same. It's an illusion of variety.

    Journal is my need too. Especially a journey where you can sort quest even if they are subtle. Like some days back, I stumbled upon a guy which I had encountered maybe early in the game before like 50 hours and totally forgot that he said, go claim back my castle from here. Bosses could be really hard to manage because of how many they are but these subtle quest dialogues should be added to journel in the exact form in which npcs ask. Like if he says that may this thing lies beyond this area, so I could see what he said and get reminded that there was a guy I was supposed to help.

    Guess what, there *is* a journal of sorts - only for the questline bosses (like Godrick), but there is. If you talk to the guy in front of the First Step site of Grace, he'll tell you how you're doing on your progression in acquiring the items necessary to become the Elden Lord. Btw I find it incredibly funny how many people are completely adverse of just talking to the npcs. If you talk to them, the story becomes much clearer, you find the side-quests, and your overall experience becomes much better. One example is the sewing kit guy. He's that guy that was transformed into a bush, and who was scared to death of going into a cave. You tell him to be brave, he goes there, and when you find the cave there he is, dying on the floor.

    my takes on a couple of these: -when people complain about the tutorial, it's most likely the case of them not expecting the "scripted" death boss to be _before_ said tutorial (which, btw, is rather in-depth compared to previous titles) -on the last part, about the "delay" on attacks, there is one, definitely: it's that little wind up before attacking that let's enemies punish you for mistiming your attacks

    I'm quite an avid Souls player (only ones I haven't played are DS2 and Sekiro) and I completely missed the tutorial. Thought the NPC was just giving vague lore/hints about what was to come in the game, and I thought the pit was just death so I ran straight to the door. I missed out on a few of the new mechanics because of this, and frankly, I don't think this was a good way to do a tutorial. DS1 has the best tutorial imo. Simple, easy to understand, without paragraphs of text. Here's an example, Guard Counters: Sure, you could give a paragraph explanation that's hidden away in a seemingly dangerous and not-so-obvious path, or take the DS1 approach and give us a floor message that says (PS5 controls) L1 to guard R2 after guard to counter Done. There's the tutorial on guard counters. Now give me a slightly more aggressive enemy so I can try it out and move on.

    I missed the tutorial and got the bow and arrow controls walking into the river guardian. Having never played a souls game, but hearing about their difficulty, I assumed all enemies would be this hard and I had to grit it out and beat the guardian. Because the only controls explained to me were bow and arrow, I tried time after time to use the arrows to kill the guardian. Not having any explanation of how the two-hands system works, I kept trying to shoot an arrow with r1 and being confused why he swung his sword. So I assumed that the only way to get r1 to shoot arrows is to first look down the sight of the bow first with l1. If you don't use triangle, which is in the missable tutorial, this is the only option you can find. You now must try and make sense of this while the river guardian brutally runs you down on horseback. It was a great introduction to the series for me (sarcasm XD)
