Going on the overnight ferry from Shetland to Aberdeen (UK)

Hi all!
It has been a while since I put anything on KZread, a lot of things got in the way, mainly laziness and catching covid.
While I was in Scotland last year I had the opportunity to take an overnight ferry with a friend for the very first time. The ferry journey in this video is actually my second overnight ferry (the first was three days ago when I went from Orkney to Shetland), but I had the chance to film my voyage on the ship as not many people in the UK, let alone the world have slept overnight on a ferry.
I must say sleeping on a ferry is not entirely comfortable, but well worth the experience. I don't think I'll be as good as other KZreadrs who exclusively post ferry videos but it's still a fair first attempt. There are plenty of other travel loggers who have more videos of overnight ferries from around the world. Here are two examples:
Noel Philips / inflightvideo
Solo Travel Japan / solotraveljapan
Also many thanks to my friend Damien for helping out with some of the footage, as well as accompanying me on the trip.
Note: At 3:10 the caption "That's not our ferry, it's the one on the right" is wrong. I got the two ferries mixed up, it's hard to tell when you're walking in a red tunnel with limited windows while holding a camera. Also there are two scenes at 4:20 and 9:15 that might not good for those with epilepsy as they both contain flickering lights.
So please enjoy and don't forget to subscribe!

I've been watching a lot of the Japanese Travel KZreadrs. What I appreciate most about them is they don't try to make themselves the center of the video. No, "Welcome to my channel! Isn't this amazing! Blah blah blah! Look at me!" Some of your pans of the camera are a little fast and shakey. However, I've subscribed to your channel and will now go back and check out some of your videos. Keep up the good work. Hopefully other people who find you by chance will spread the word. :) p.s. I'd be very pleased to never hear music laid over the video. The sounds of the ships, the trains, the crowds, the rain, these are all more pleasing. :)

We had 3 great weeks touring the Shetland Isles just before Covid and the ferry journey is really part of the holiday. A clean, comfortable boat with great food and inexpensive bars. The cabin really is the best option unless you're very young and fit. Thank you for this video, I brought back some happy memories.

Good video brought back happy memories. I went posh and paid the extra with car - you turn up and hand keys over - you walk on board and leave the car to them. Meal included and an extra late lie in the morning, then saunter down after breakfast and car is waiting on the quayside - Wonderful!

I made this trip the other way in September 1991. We left Aberdeen at 18.00 and reached Kirkwall direct at 14.30 next day. Extremely rough seas all the way. Apparently a lorry loaded with cement rolled on top of a hearse down below, it was that rough. I shook the captain's hand once he had docked, and thanked him for getting us there. Even he said "That was quite a trip!" I flew back as planned late the next day, but another passenger was on a Business Return that meant he had to sail back the same day - in the same conditions!

Wow, that's quite a story to tell, thanks for sharing that! On the overnight journey I took (Kirkwall to Lerwick) before the one in this video, the sea was very choppy but not as what you experienced but manged to make it, just a little later than normal. But the "swell" from the sea meant no small boat trips around Shetland for a few days. Oh well, maybe next time!

I've just come back from this exact trip, my phone must be listening to me since this showed up in my main page. It's a very long ferry but totally worth it. Shetland is so beautiful as well as the rest of it's islands. It's such a long trip to make though, really you need to have a reason to go so far out. Mine was to see my best friend get married, it was a trip of a life time but very cold. ❄️ Will probably be back there for the viking festival and strawberry season 🍓

You said that “you can only take hand luggage to your cabin” this is actually not true, you can take as much luggage to your cabin as you want. And it was the boat on the left not the right. And that shot in Aberdeen wouldn’t have been taken til at least 7am because that’s when the ferry docks. Great Video though! 😃

Interesting contrast with Japanese ferry videos. Those producers are fastidious about not showing other passengers, but the on-board shops are filmed in detail. In this video fellow passengers don't seem as jealous of their privacy but recording the gift shop is frowned on.

It's not that filming in the gift shop is frowned on, it's so small that the shopkeeper will notice me straight away and may have a few words to say about it, even if he didn't mind me filming at all. Also I'm not very good at reacting to people talking to me out of the blue anyway

We took a Loganair plane from Edinburgh to Kirkwall and one of my friends only had a Freedom Pass and an old passport for ID. At the airport, they looked at his Freedom Pass and let him on. If they didn't, you probably wouldn't be watching this video! 😂

@@danielbettsmanwithautism6421 Hey, thanks for the reply. It is not about moving the camera in general but about the smoothness of movement and how the camera is pointed. If you look at the image you'll notice that the camera is almost always pointed down slightly. It forces the viewer to look at the upper third of the image to see the information in front of him. This creates discomfort. Make sure that the left and right edges of the image are parallel to vertical lines in the image (e.g. a doorframe or corner wall). This will already give the viewers a smoother impession. I takes some training oc. Also you should avoid fast panning at all cost. If you have to do a panning shot, the slower the better. Use the shortest focal length in closed spaces (like the cabin) and shoot from a corner to avoid panning. Ok, Filmclass dismissed. :)

But this Americanisation of the English language by non-Americans - ride a ferry, ride a train as opposed to ride on a ferry, ride on a train etc can be annoying. In English English we ride a horse, ride a bicycle but ride ON a ferry, ride ON a train and certainly don't ride aircraft.
